The Lighthouse and the Whaler is an American band from Cleveland, Ohio. Originally a folk rock trio, they eventually became a rock quartet. The group's second album, This is an Adventure, was produced by Ryan Hadlock and independently released in 2012 and received critical praise for its genre-bending melodic folk.

History

Early years and formation (2008–11)

The Lighthouse and the Whaler was formed by vocalist and guitarist Michael LoPresti in 2008. The name was inspired by Chapter 14 of Herman Melville's Moby Dick. "The Field Song", the band's first song, was a result of spontaneous collaboration that took place between Lopresti and former band members Aaron Smith and Evan Storey in a field when they were first starting. [1] Soon after "The Field Song" was selected for the acclaimed Paste Magazine Sampler CD in Issue 29. [2] In November 2009, the band co-produced and self-released its debut album, The Lighthouse and the Whaler, working with producer and musician, Dave Douglas, at his home studio. The band supported the release with a performance at SXSW 2010 [3] and The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, [4] as well as tours and opening slots for bands like The Temper Trap, GIVERS and Motion City Soundtrack. Later in 2010 the band was named the "Best Indie" act in Cleveland by Cleveland Scene Magazine [5] and was featured as a band of the month by BMI. [6] That album went on to receive more attention from Paste, [7] KEXP [8] and Daytrotter. [9]

This is an Adventure (2011–2014)

In August 2011, the band began recording This is an Adventure at Bear Creek Studios in Washington, where The Lumineers, Brandi Carlile, The Walkmen and Ra Ra Riot had previously recorded. [10] The group lived in the barn attached to the studio while making the record under the production of Hadlock.

A three-song Pioneers EP was released in March 2012, in anticipation of This is an Adventure, which followed in September 2012. Released independently, the album was the second highest ranking DIY album on the CMJ 200 in 2012 and received attention from NPR World Cafe, [11] Paste, [12] FILTER, [13] Daytrotter, [14] Under the Radar magazine and others. Music from the album was featured on Gossip Girl , CSI:NY , Emily Owens MD and other shows.

In support of the album, The Lighthouse and the Whaler toured North America with Jukebox the Ghost, Matt Pond PA, Ra Ra Riot [15] and Ewert and the Two Dragons, performing at CMJ [16] Pop! Montreal, NXNE, [17] SXSW [18] and FILTER Culture Collide Festival. [19] During Culture Collide, the band won Peter Gabriel's cover song contest to celebrate the 20th anniversary of So. [20] This is an Adventure debuted on the Billboard Heatseekers chart in March 2013. [21] Due to the success of This is an Adventure the band released the Venice Remix EP on June 10, 2014, featuring remixes from Savior Adore, Chancellor Warhol and Adam Snow as well as a new radio edit of Venice. [22] The band supported the release of the EP with a national tour supporting Matt Pond PA [23] and additional dates with Run River North on either side of its release date.

Mont Royal (2015–present)

In January 2015, The Lighthouse and the Whaler started recording its third album, Mont Royal, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The album was produced and mixed by Marcus Paquin, who previously worked with Local Natives, Arcade Fire and The National. [24] It was released on August 28, 2015, by Roll Call Records in the United States of America and Fontana North in Canada. It was released by Smack Face Records in Australia and New Zealand. The first single, "I Want to Feel Alive," included a music video featuring Holland Roden of MTV's Teen Wolf . [25]

The Lovely Sparrows is an Austin, Texas based indie rock band currently on Abandoned Love Records and founded by Shawn Jones. Their sound is categorized as indie rock, folk rock, experimental rock, alternative rock, or just rock, blending lush, complex arrangements with sing-along choruses that bring to mind folk-inflected pop and well-written novellas. Pulling Up Floors, Pouring on (New) Paint, released in 2006, captures the gorgeous melodies and warm, organic maladies of front man Shawn Jones. The September 2008 release saw the band embark on its most extensive touring to date, which included CMJ Music Marathon, Pop Montreal and South by Southwest in Austin, Texas. The Lovely Sparrows premiered the music video directed and animated by Eric Power of Clear Productions for "Year of the Dog" off Bury the Cynic during the 2009 SXSW Music Festival in Austin, Texas. The video was honored as one of the 25 best music videos of the year 2008 by MusicForants.com. Bury the Cynics was on the best of list by Fensepost, The Bomb Shelter (#11), the Austinist (#5), Side One: Track One v1 (#7) and Side One: Track One v2 (#1).

Stylistically, the band fuses together elements from folk, psychedelic rock, indie music, jazz, soul, and other diverse influences. Hands is an indie rock band from Los Angeles, California. The band was founded in 2012 and previously released an EP, Massive Context, on Small Plates Records. Their first single was debuted by Nylon Magazine in April 2012. The band also released a 7” on White Iris Records in January 2013. In January, the band signed to Kill Rock Stars and announced that its forthcoming debut full-length, Synesthesia, would be released by the label on April 30, 2013. The first single from the album, "Trouble", was debuted exclusively on Stereogum, and the band performed at SXSW in 2013. On January 9, 2013, Lauren Laverne featured "Trouble" between Depeche Mode and Veronica Falls on BBC6., and later featured it as the BBC MPFree of the day. On January 23, 2013, Nylon Magazine premiered the first single from their new 7" release on White Iris Records. The track, entitled "All I Want To Know", was subsequently featured by Filter Magazine.

Social Studies is an indie rock band from San Francisco, California, composed of Natalia Rogovin, Tom Smith (guitar), Ben McClintock (guitar), Jesse Hudson, and Michael Jirkovsky (drums). Their sound has been described as “structurally trim and sonically dazzling”.

Born Cages was a New York City-based indie rock band formed in 2011 by Vlad Holiday. In January 2018, the band officially announced it had split after 6 years of touring and recording. Past members include Vlad Holiday, Matt Maroulakos, Dave Tantao, Amanda Carl, Steve Kellner, Pete Malleo, and Mike Lisa. The band released their final mini-album/EP Exit Signs in a Burning Building around SXSW Music Festival in March 2017, where NPR raved, "Undeniably great songs... Every moment was Instagram-ready, and every song made me want to throw my hands in the air... I look forward to saying, 'I saw them when...'" The album contained lead single "Ain't Gonna Happen", which charted on Spotify's United States Viral 50.
