The Lobby (improv)

The Lobby was an improvisational comedy group based in Southern California. Unlike many improv groups, which are composed of many members who perform on a rotating basis, The Lobby was a small, close-knit group. The audience got to know each of the players and feel they were part of the group. The Lobby also irregularly put up a podcast, which further allowed their audience to connect with the players. [1]

History

The Lobby was formed by Josh Nicols, Matt Thomas, and Chase Hooper in the lobby of the Haugh Performing Arts Center while rehearsing for an adult Christmas show. [2] However, the name, "The Lobby," comes from the 1950s advertisement jingle played in movie theaters, "Let's All Go to the Lobby." [3]

The Lobby first performed on December 23, 2005 at the Renaissance Theatre in Glendora, California. After the Renaissance Theatre closed at the end of 2007, The Lobby moved to The Fontana Community Players' Theatre in Fontana, California and STAGEStheatre in Fullerton, California, where they remained. On April 8, 2009, MyFOX Los Angeles announced that The Lobby was voted "Best Improv Comedy Group" in Orange County for 2009. [5] The Lobby won again in 2010. [6]

The Lobby started the Orange County Improv Cup, an improv tournament with randomly assigned teams of improvisers from all over Southern California, to raise money for the Hole in the Wall Camps. The team of Tony Rey, Staci Pratt, Kristin Sanchez, and Jill Tsai won the first ever Improv Cup title. [7] [8]

As of 2022, the Lobby has long been defunct. This is strongly reinforced by the fact that both Spectacles Improv Engine and STAGESTheatre have both been closed due to the pandemic in 2020.

Format

The Lobby usually performed shortform improv, very similar to the styles of Whose Line is it Anyway? and ComedySportz. A normal show consists of 10 to 12 short improv games that are each based on a suggestion from the audience. [9]

Every shortform show contains a game in which The Lobby's host, Josh Nicols, interviewed an audience member and then the game is played based on that interview. An example of an interview game is Eulogy, in which the players act out the audience member's funeral. The Lobby has also invented several games, such as CSI: Punnsylvania, which is based on the television show CSI: Miami. CSI: Punnsylvania was featured in William Hall's book, The Playbook, Improv Games for Performers. [10]

Occasionally, The Lobby had performed a longform show. The format of the longform show was based on a genre of movie (such as a romantic comedy or comic book movie). The host got a handful of suggestions from the audience, and then the players acted out a twenty-minute movie based on those suggestions.

Friday Nite Improvs

Friday Nite Improvs, or Friday Night Improvs (FNI), was a long-running weekly improvisational comedy show staged on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The show functioned as an improv jam, performed by improv actors who don't normally work together. FNI was unique in that, in addition to the audience's providing improv suggestions, the performers are all pulled from volunteers in the audience. FNI ended in 2014. A student improv group, Ruckus, has succeeded FNI as a resident improv group on the University of Pittsburgh's campus.

Bassprov

Bassprov is a two-person longform improvisational comedy show. The main characters, Donny Weaver and Earl Hinkle, are middle-aged central Indiana blue-collar men who spend their free time fishing and talking about sports. The show begins with an audience suggestion of a current event and "something you can stick your fingers in." From there, a completely improvised dialogue is created while interconnecting events from the characters' lives and the suggestions, all while the two men fish.

Un-Scripted specializes in narrative and genre-based "single-story" improvised theater.

SAK Comedy Lab (SAK) is a 250-seat Improvisational Comedy (Improv) theater in downtown Orlando, Florida, listed as "one of Orlando's most popular entertainment venues" by 10Best.com and has been named amongst the "50 best comedy clubs in America" by clickitticket.com. SAK's most notable alumnus is actor Wayne Brady, who has played as a guest player in several SAK shows since finding fame as a performer on Whose Line Is It Anyway?, Let's Make A Deal, Chappelle's Show, and other projects. Theatre Strike Force

Theatre Strike Force is the University of Florida's premier improv and sketch comedy troupe. The group also goes by TSF. The style of improv performed by Theatre Strike Force is a combination long form and short form. They both teach and perform improvisational comedy. They have six house teams which include both forms of improv as well as a sketch team. There are four long form house teams which are cast every semester and usually have six to eight members. The TSF Short Form Team is cast every semester as well and usually has fifteen to nineteen members. TSF Sketch is the final house team and usually has twelve to sixteen members, cast each semester.

Wing-It Productions, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit theater company based in Seattle, Washington, United States which exclusively produces improvised theater. Wing-It operates from their theater located at 55th Avenue and University Way NE in Seattle's U-District. The organization is primarily known as its main brand, Jet City Improv.

The Bent Theatre, formerly known as Whole World Theater Charlottesville, is an improvisational comedy troupe based in Charlottesville, Virginia, United States. It was founded by Jenn Horne, in 2004. The group began with weekly classes, then accumulated enough actors to perform monthly shows at various venues on Charlottesville's Downtown Mall. As of 2010, its home base is Play On Theater.

Madcap Theater is a shortform improvisational comedy group located in Westminster, Colorado. Opened in 2006 by improv actors Russ Faillaci and Brian Harper, the group performs weekly improv shows and offers improv classes. In 2007, 2008, and 2009, it was voted Denver's best live comedy venue by ABC Channel 7. Unique from many other improvisational comedy groups, Madcap performs family-friendly, clean comedy.
