The Lovers (German - Liebespaar) or The Gotha Lovers (Gothaer Liebespaar) is a c.1480 oil on panel painting attributed to the Master of the Housebook (drawing hand Ib). [1] It is the first German large-format double portrait panel painting that does not depict a religious or liturgical scene. A painting with a similar composition and a corresponding text reference from Mainz is now lost but is preserved through a copy in the late 16th century family register of the Eisenberg family.
It has been in Gotha since at least 1854 and has hung in the Ducal Museum Gotha since its reopening in October 2013. After a 1997 restoration it was displayed at the Castle Museum in Friedenstein Palace and an exhibition in 1998 entitled "Jahreszeiten der Gefühle. Das Gothaer Liebespaar und die Minne im Spätmittelalter" ("Season of Emotions. The Gotha Lovers and Love in the Late Middle Ages") largely adopted art historian Daniel Hess' identification of the subjects as Philipp I, Count of Hanau-Münzenberg and Margarete Weißkirchner (with whom Phillipp lived after his wife Adriana's death) and his theory that it was commissioned on the occasion of his first pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 1484-1485. [2] [3] Objections to that identification have recently been raised on historical grounds. [4]
Measuring 118 by 82.5 cm, [5] it shows two people lovingly leaning towards each other under two scrolls or banners (which act as 'speech bubbles') and the coat of arms of the County of Hanau-Münzenberg or (if the yellow is accepted as degraded varnish [6] ) the Lords of Eppstein. [7] The man wears a wreath of roses in his long hair as a sign of love and the woman holds a hedge rose in her left hand, whilst she carefully reaches for the red bundle of strings bound in gold in the middle of the picture. That bundle or string is mentioned on the banners. [8] At that time such a string was worn on clothing as a symbol of fidelity (in this case the end of the man's gugel), in a custom based on Numbers 15, verse 38:
The Lord said to Moses, Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘Throughout the generations to come you are to make tassels on the corners of your garments, with a blue cord on each tassel."
The decorative "S" initial of the right-hand banner compared to the plain "U" initial on the left, along with the content of the dialogue both show that the woman's statement on the right hand banner begins the dialogue. [9] In an Alemannic dialect of German, it reads:
This translates as:
It is a promise of fidelity by the couple, which is portrayed in a manner appropriate to their status, showing them in equally rich clothing and exchanging a gold-woven lace. [10] The man assures that the woman that he has taken care of her well-being (and will continue to do so in the future). Assuming the man is Phillip, this would be consistent with the fact that a count like him could not marry a middle-class woman like her. The promise of fidelity would still have a logical historical reference, however, even if the image is an idealised depiction of late medieval love and not intended to resemble Phillip and his lover.
An analyis was published in 1996 arguing that the banners addressed an "unfair" or "Unbillig" (i.e. illegal) mismarriage, [11] but this has now been rejected [10] [12] - reading Un byllich as Unbillig is in fact impossible since there is a divider between the two words. [10] Even so the painting's intention is still debated, thanks to the imagery and the ambigous interpretations which the banners allow. For example, female jealousy is assumed to be a proof of love according to the love doctrine of Andreas Capellanus in the attributes, meaning that the picture represents a time-spanning apotheosis of the secrets of love. This, however, presupposes a completely different reading of the banner and would need a previous lover to have made the man's lace: Another female person addressed by the woman would have made the man's lace before the relationship depicted in the painting. [13]

The Lords of Eppstein were a family of German nobility in the Middle Ages. From the 12th century they ruled extensive territories in the Rhine Main area from their castle in Eppstein, northwest of Frankfurt, Germany.
Walter Arthur Berendsohn was a German literary scholar. He was an active member of the Deutsche Liga fur Menschenrechte, a spinoff of the pacifist Bund Neues Vaterland, until 1933 when he fled for Sweden when the group was dissolved by Nazis.
The Master of the Berswordt Altar was a German painter, active in the area around Dortmund during the 14th and 15th centuries. A number of works around Westphalia, including one in Bielefeld, are attributed to him. His altar is in the Marienkirche, Dortmund.
Count Philipp I of Hanau-Münzenberg, nicknamed Philipp the Younger, was a son of Count Reinhard III of Hanau and Countess Palatine Margaret of Mosbach. He was the Count of Hanau from 1452 to 1458. The county was then divided between him and his uncle Philipp the Elder. Philipp the Younger received Hanau-Münzenberg and ruled there from 1458 until his death.
Ulrich II, Lord of Hanau was Lord of Hanau from 1305/1306 until his death.
Ulrich IV, Lord of Hanau (1330/40–1380) was Lord of Hanau from 1369 or 1370 until his death. Based on the estimated year his parents married, he is assumed to have been born between 1330 and 1340. He was the son of Ulrich III of Hanau and Adelaide of Nassau.

Ludwig of Hanau-Lichtenberg was a German nobleman. He was a younger son of Count Philipp II and his wife Anna of Isenburg-Büdingen.
Margaret of Hanau was the only daughter of Count Reinhard III of Hanau (1412–1452) and his wife Countess Palatine Margaret of Mosbach (1432–1457).

The Ernestine Gymnasium is a humanistic and modern gymnasium in Gotha, Germany, the successor of the Illustrious Gymnasium, founded in 1524, which in 1853 was merged with the recently founded Real-Gymnasium Ernestinum, named in honour of Ernest I, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. The merged school continued to be known as the Ernestinum. Until 1947, when it was closed, it was considered the oldest gymnasium in the German-speaking world. It was re-founded in 1991, shortly after German reunification.

The Portrait of a Man in a Wide-Brimmed Hat is a work by the Dutch Golden-Age artist Frans Hals. It was painted in about 1625–1635 and hangs in the Herzogliches Museum, part of the Friedenstein Palace complex at Gotha, Germany. It was stolen in 1979, recovered in 2019, and restored in 2020–2021.
Gaston Vorberg (1875-1947) was a German physician, medical historian and sexologist. He also translated Latin and Italian texts into German.
Peter Moraw was a German historian. He served as a professor of Medieval History, German Regional History, and Economic and Social History at the University of Giessen until his retirement in 2003. Moraw's work in the latter half of the 20th century had a significant impact on research related to the Late Middle Ages in Germany. He is recognized for integrating social sciences and prosopography into medieval studies, as well as for his focus on structural history and social history in the context of university history. His volume on the late medieval period, From an Open Constitution to a Designed Consolidation of the Propylaea, History of Germany, became a key reference in the field.
The Museum of Nature Gotha is a museum in the German city of Gotha. Since 2004 it has been one of four museums run by the Schloss Friedenstein Foundation Gotha, named after the Schloss Friedenstein in the city. Particularly notable are the 1952-1954 hunting and animal-scene diorama backgrounds created by Friedrich Reimann, who also designed the murals in the entrance hall and stairwell.
Carl Aldenhoven was a German art historian who served as director of the Ducal Library at the Friedenstein Palace in Gotha (1873–1879), the Ducal Museum in the same city (1879–1890) and the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum in Cologne (1890–1907).
