The Merthyr Telegraphand General Advertiser for the Iron Districts of South Wales (established in 1855 by Peter Williams) was a weekly publication distributed in the iron-producing areas of South Wales. It contained mainly local news and information.^[1]

South Wales is a loosely defined region of Wales bordered by England and the Bristol Channel to the east and south. It has a population of around 2.2 million, almost three-quarters of the whole of Wales, including 400,000 in Cardiff, 250,000 in Swansea and 150,000 in Newport. Generally considered to include the historic counties of Glamorgan and Monmouthshire, South Wales extends westwards to include Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire. In the western extent, from Swansea westwards, local people would probably recognise that they lived in both south Wales and west Wales. The Brecon Beacons National Park covers about a third of South Wales, containing Pen y Fan, the highest British mountain south of Cadair Idris in Snowdonia.

Welsh Newspapers Online has digitised 1,336 issues of the Merthyr Telegraph (1855–1881) from the newspaper holdings of the National Library of Wales.^[1]

Welsh Newspapers Online is the searchable digital archive of historic Welsh newspaper holdings of the National Library of Wales. It is a work in progress and, as of September 2016, over 1,100,000 newspaper pages from 120 newspapers were available free online, comprising over 15 million articles including news, family notices and advertising. The years covered are from 1804 to 1919, and a brief history and listing of relevant newspapers is provided. Copyright provisions are frequently described as "unknown" in the context of an otherwise explicit overall policy.

Lucy Thomas,, was a Welsh businesswoman and colliery owner known as 'the mother of the Welsh steam coal trade'. Thomas took over the running of her husband Robert's coal mine after his death in 1833. Unusual as it was at the time that a woman ran the business, more unusually she was also illiterate. Business documents held in the Glamorgan Archives show she signed only with an X. Much of Thomas' subsequent success as a businesswoman was embellished by Merthyr historian Charles Wilkins, who wrote one of the few articles on her life in 1888. It is now believed that George Insole, a Cardiff agent, was one of the chief architects of her success, though this does not diminish Thomas' position as one of the few women coal owners in industrial Britain. It is recorded that Lucy once attended the Coal Exchange in Cardiff only to be told she could not enter. She sent a male clerk in her employ into the Coal Exchange with a letter informing the establishment that 'My coal is equal to any mans, failure to grant entry will lead to my business lining another's pockets'.
