Operation
The Orion is published every Wednesday of the semester, except for fall semester finals week. During finals week of spring semester, a special summer issue is produced. Each issue was broadsheet format until 2015 and changed to tabloid format. The paper is divided into news, opinion, calendar, arts and sports sections.
The Orion has separate staffs for editorial content, business/advertising, and design. Editorial content (and the paper overall) is headed by the editor in chief and the managing editor, business and advertising is headed by the business manager, and design is headed by the art director.
In editorial content, there are four specific departments, covering different types of events: news, opinion, sports and features. Each section is headed by an editor, who oversees a staff of reporters. Editors choose one of the reporters to be an assistant editor. There are also three more departments: copy proofreads and copy edits stories, photo produces picture to be included with the stories and online produces content in conjunction with the other departments for production on the newspaper's Web site.
Design is divided into two departments: editorial and advertising. These departments are headed by a design manager. Editorial design helps layout and creates graphics for editorial content, while advertising design designs advertisements for the paper that are sold by the business staff. Advertising design is also assigned a member of the copy department who proofreads ads.
The business department oversees the financial aspects of the paper, selling and placing advertisements, handling costs, and helping the paper stay in budget.
California State University, Chico, is a public university in Chico, California. Founded in 1887, it is the second oldest campus in the California State University system. As of the Fall 2018 semester, the university had a total enrollment of 17,448 students. The university offers 126 bachelor's degree programs, 35 master's degree programs, and four types of teaching credentials.
The Maneater is the official, editorially independent student news publication of the University of Missouri. The Maneater editorial and advertising staffs are composed entirely of students, with the exception of a professional business adviser. Financially, The Maneater is a non-profit publication funded by advertisers. The newspaper is distributed free of charge, and all aspects of its website remain accessible at no cost to readers. The editorial department of The Maneater remains independent from any student governments and organizations, as well as the Missouri School of Journalism and university itself.
The Hoya, founded in 1920, is the oldest and largest student newspaper of Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., serving as the university’s newspaper of record. The Hoya is a student-run paper that prints every Friday and publishes online daily throughout the year, with a print circulation of 4,000 during the academic year. The newspaper has four main editorial sections: News, Opinion, Sports and The Guide, a weekly arts and lifestyle magazine. It also publishes several annual special issues including a New Student Guide, a basketball preview and a semesterly fashion issue.
Washington Square News is the weekly student newspaper of New York University (NYU). It is the companion publication for NYU along with NYU Local, and the undergraduate equivalent of Washington Square Review.
The Daily Reveille has been since 1887 the student newspaper at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. It prints once a week on Wednesdays during the fall, spring and summer semesters. The Daily Reveille has a weekly circulation of about 6,000 copies.
The Daily Toreador, also known as The DT, is the student newspaper of Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. The newspaper was first published in 1925 as The Toreador and later changed its name to The University Daily before arriving at the current name in 2005. All content for The DT is produced by a staff around 40 members including editors, reporters and photographers. The DT has received numerous regional and national awards, including two Columbia Scholastic Press Association Silver crown awards and two Associated Collegiate Press Pacemaker Award finalists. As well, the paper counts five Pulitzer Prizes and four winners amongst its former staff members.
The Daily Trojan, or "DT," is the student newspaper of the University of Southern California. The newspaper is a forum for student expression and is written, edited, and managed by university students. The paper is intended to inform USC students, faculty, and staff on the latest news and provide opinion and entertainment. Student writers, editors, photographers and artists can develop their talents and air their opinions while providing a service to the campus community through the Daily Trojan. Readers can interact with the Daily Trojan by commenting on articles online or writing a letter to the editor.
The State News is the student newspaper of Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan. It is supported by a combination of advertising revenue and a $7.50 refundable tax that students pay at each semester's matriculation. Though The State News is supported by a student tax, the faculty and administration do not interfere in the paper's content. The State News is governed by a Board of Directors, which comprises journalism professionals, faculty and students. In 2010, the Princeton Review ranked The State News as the #8 best college newspaper in the country. And in 2015, the Society of Professional Journalists named TSN as the nation's best daily college newspaper for 2014.
The Daily Tar Heel (DTH) is the independent student newspaper of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. It was founded on February 23, 1893, and became a daily newspaper in 1929. The paper places a focus on university news and sports, but it also includes heavy coverage of Orange County and North Carolina. In 2016, the paper moved from five days a week in print to four, cutting the Tuesday edition. In 2017, the paper began to print on only Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. All editorial content is overseen by student editors and a volunteer student staff of about 230 people. It is the largest news organization in Orange County.
The Eastern Echo is the independent student newspaper of Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Michigan. The paper is funded through advertising revenue. The paper is published on Mondays during the fall and winter semesters. Although EMU funds a Student Media Director, that official has no editorial influence over the content of the Eastern Echo.
The Collegiate Times is an independent, student-run newspaper serving Virginia Tech since 1903. The Educational Media Company at Virginia Tech (EMCVT), a non-profit student media consortium, owns the publication. Based in Blacksburg, Virginia, the Collegiate Times publishes local news, sports, features and opinions for 5,000 print readers every Tuesday of the academic year and prints weekly summer editions. The Collegiate Times represents the only daily newspaper produced in Blacksburg and also provides its content online via its website, mobile app, and various social media outlets. Photographs in the CT, as it's popularly known, are provided by the Student Publications Photo Staff, also a division of the EMCVT. The publication is currently led by Editor-In-Chief Ashley Long and managing editor Isabella Rossi.
The Indiana Daily Student (IDS) is an independent, student-run newspaper that has been published for the community of Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, since 1867. The IDS is free and distributed throughout the campus and city.
The Old Gold & Black is the student-run newspaper of Wake Forest University, named after the school's colors. The newspaper was founded in 1916 and is published every Thursday with the exception of school holidays and exam weeks. The Old Gold & Black's office is located on the fifth floor of the Benson University Center on Wake Forest's main campus.
The Rocky Mountain Collegian is the daily student newspaper of Colorado State University. Founded in 1891, the paper is one of the oldest daily student newspapers west of the Mississippi River and is the only student-run daily newspaper in the state of Colorado. In 2010, the Collegian was ranked one of the top three daily student newspapers in the nation by the Society of Professional Journalists.
The Northern Light is the student newspaper at the University of Alaska Anchorage. The Northern Light began in September 1988, after the University of Alaska Anchorage and Anchorage Community College merged. The paper is completely produced by students.
The Villanovan has been the officially recognized and accredited student newspaper of Villanova University since its founding in 1916. The tabloid-style, weekly paper publishes every Thursday during the semester and maintains a circulation of 5,000 copies which are distributed throughout the Villanova campus and at various locations in the surrounding community. The Villanovan also has a digital circulation website which regularly releases its material. It is staffed by over 150 undergraduate students. All content of The Villanovan is the responsibility of the editors and the editorial board and do not necessarily represent the views of the administration, faculty and students of Villanova University unless specifically stated. While The Villanovan is owned by Villanova University, Villanova University subscribes to the principle of responsible freedom of expression for the student editors.
The Oakland Post is a weekly newspaper published in Oakland County, Michigan. It is a student-run, independent newspaper serving Oakland University. It is owned by the Oakland Sail, Inc. The current editor-in-chief is Shelby Tankersley. Paige Brockway preceded Tankersley, serving as editor from fall 2016 through spring 2017. Kristen Davis served as editor from Fall 205 to spring 2016. Kaylee Kean served as editor summer 2015. Oona Goodin-Smith served as editor from summer 2014 through spring 2015. Scott Wolchek served as editor from summer 2013 to spring 2014. Former editor Nichole Seguin served from the winter of 2011 through the spring of 2013. Kay Nguyen served as editor from the 2010 spring semester through the 2011 fall semester. The 2009–10 editor-in-chief was Colleen Miller.
La Ventana is the yearbook of Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. The student media organization began its publication in 1925.
The FSView & Florida Flambeau is a for-profit newspaper owned by the Gannett Company that covers the on-campus events, happenings, and trends of the Florida State University as well as concerts, museum and art exhibits, movies, literature and poetry readings, and other events from the larger Tallahassee community. In early August 2006, the FSView made national news as being the first privately owned, college-oriented newspaper to be bought by a major newspaper chain.
The Suffolk Journal is the undergraduate student newspaper of Suffolk University. It has operated continuously since 1936. The Journal prints a 16-page weekly newspaper, distributed across campus and Beacon Hill.
