The Philistines Jr. is an American rock band from Connecticut. Active since 1990, the group has released four studio albums, the most recent being 2019's Help!.

History

The Philistines Jr. was founded by brothers Peter Katis and Tarquin Katis, alongside friend Adam Pierce. [1] In addition to guitar, bass, and drums, their early records made use of keyboard instruments such as electric organ and toy piano. [2]

After their second full-length, Analog vs. Digital, was released in 2001, they issued no new material until 2010, when If a Band Plays in the Woods...? was released. [3] This was released with a companion album, If a Lot of Bands Play in the Woods...?, of other bands covering and remixing tracks from If a Band Plays in the Woods...?. Artists on the companion album included The National, Mice Parade, Tokyo Police Club, Tapes 'N Tapes, Jonsi, Mercury Rev, Oneida, We Were Promised Jetpacks, and Frightened Rabbit. [4]

The band was then quiet again for several years, but in 2017, they released a cover of the song "NYC" by Interpol. [5] The Philistines Jr. toured with Gang of Youths in 2018. [6] After the suicide of Frightened Rabbit singer Scott Hutchison, The Philistines Jr. contributed a cover of "Bright Pink Bookmark" to Tiny Changes , a tribute album of covers of songs from Frightened Rabbit's The Midnight Organ Fight - which Peter Katis had produced. [7] Later in 2019, the group released its fourth full-length, Help!, which Paste described as "an attempt to make sense of the world at an unsettled time." [8]

In addition to the Philistines Jr., the group members also play in bands called Iris and The Zambonis. [2] Peter Katis works as a producer, Tarquin Katis runs Tarquin Records, the band's own label, and Adam Pierce records under the pseudonym Mice Parade.

The Mommyheads are an indie pop band who played from around 1987 through 1998, disbanded for a decade, and then reformed in 2008. Starting in New York City as the brainchild of singer Adam Cohen, the band produced a string of quirky and highly inventive releases on various independent labels, most notably Simple Machines. Their music has been compared to XTC and 80s King Crimson. They relocated to San Francisco in 1990. The band signed to Geffen Records in 1997, producing a single album for the label before breaking up in 1998. Jon Pareles from the NY Times wrote that their Geffen LP had "perfectly balanced melodies". They reunited to record a new CD in 2008 and have been active ever since.

The Midnight Organ Fight is the second studio album by Scottish indie rock band Frightened Rabbit. Recorded during 2007 between studios at Bridgeport, Connecticut and Glasgow, Scotland, the album was released on 14 April 2008 through independent label Fat Cat Records. Hailed by critics as "one of the finest [breakup records] of recent vintage", frontman Scott Hutchison has described the album as being "a lot more intense" than its predecessor Sing the Greys (2006). Following the album's completion, it took around a month for him to be able to listen to it. The album's title comes from a line in the song "Fast Blood", and is said to be a euphemism for sex.

The Winter of Mixed Drinks is the third studio album by Scottish indie rock band Frightened Rabbit, released on 1 March 2010 through independent label FatCat Records. As with its predecessor, the critically acclaimed The Midnight Organ Fight (2008), the album was recorded and produced by Peter Katis. Vocalist, guitarist and songwriter Scott Hutchison states that The Winter of Mixed Drinks is "more of a storytelling record" than the band's previous two albums, and notes that the album is "about an escape and maybe even a slight breakdown. I have to say, it's semi-fictional. There's a protagonist who is possibly male but it doesn't really describe my life because if I did that it wouldn't make for an interesting album this time around as I’ve been quite solid and content, thankfully."

On the band's website, they explained the reason for doing a covers album. "We've been talking about doing a covers record for a long time. We'd hear a great song at 2 AM while driving the straight line from one part of Texas to the next, and all we'd want to do is play that song as if we had written it." The album was recorded and produced by Kori Gardner and Jason Hammel, making it their first self-produced record to date. The album was mixed by Peter Katis (The National, Interpol, Frightened Rabbit, Jónsi), a longtime collaborator. The third track "Sleep the Clock Around" was featured in the film The Art of Getting By.

After frontman and founding member Scott Hutchison's disappearance and subsequent death in 2018, the remaining members retired the Frightened Rabbit name, leaving Painting of a Panic Attack as their final album.
