The Print Circle is a professional group of women printmakers that operate out of Sydney, New South Wales. [1] The group was created in 1970 by 15 women artists who took pioneering and experimental approaches to printmaking and supported women artists. [2] The group first worked out of Willoughby Arts Centre (then the North Shore Arts Centre) set up by Joy Ewart who included lithographic and etching presses in the centre. [3] Sue Buckley became the first printmaking tutor and was a member of Sydney Printmakers. [2] In 1971 the first Print Circle exhibition was held at Sebert Galleries in the Argyle Centre, Sydney. [4] The Print Circle promotes the work of women artists, similar to the Tin Sheds workshop at University of Sydney. [5]
In 1994 the Print Circle held an exhibition titled "Beyond the Word", which examined the symbolic influence of words. [6]
As of March 2024 [update] , artists who are part of the Print Circle include Lorraine Avery, Helen Best, Jean Birrell, Janet Carter, Olwen Cheung, Edith Cowlishaw, Prue Crabbe, Tanya Crothers, Barbara Davidson, Joanne Gwatkin-Williams, Debra Hannigan, Jill Harris, Carolyn Hunter, Wendy Morrison, Carol Shaw, Judy Smith, Laura Stark, Anna Warren, Deborah Wilkinson, Naomi Woodlands, and Ann Bewah Wu. Elisabeth Cummings is an Australian artist known for her large abstract paintings and printmaking. She has won numerous awards including Fleurieu Art Prize, The Portia Geach Portrait Prize, The Mosman Art Prize, and The Tattersalls Art Prize. Her work is owned in permanent collections across Australia including Artbank, The Queensland Art Gallery, The Gold Coast City Art Gallery and the Art Gallery of New South Wales. She is notable for receiving recognition later in her career, considered by the Australian Art Collector as one of the 50 most collectible Australian Artists.

Grahame Edwin King was a master Australian printmaker, who has been called the "patron saint of contemporary Australian printmaking". He was responsible for the revival of print making in Australia in the 1960s. He helped set up the Print Council of Australia, of which he was the first Honorary Secretary and was later President. He taught printmaking at The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) from 1966 to 1988. In 1991, he was awarded an Order of Australia for his services to education. As well as teaching, King produced his own art work, concentrating on lithographs and monotypes. He was also a skilled photographer and used his photography both in his teaching and in his practice.
Valerie Lynch Napaltjarri is an Indigenous Australian artist from Papunya in Australia's Northern Territory. She is a painter and printmaker whose work has been collected by the National Gallery of Australia.
Tate Adams was an Australian artist, based in Townsville, who was named a Member of the Order of Australia in 2009 for service to publishing and to the arts, particularly through contributions to the development of printmaking in Australia. In 2010 he was made the Inaugural Honorary Fellow of the Print Council of Australia.

Cristina Asquith Baker (1868–1960) was an Australian artist known for her paintings and lithographs. She studied with Frederick McCubbin, one of the key artists of the Australian impressionist Heidelberg school, but she was independent and did not tie herself to a single school of thought. She twice studied abroad, in Paris and London, gaining expertise in various other forms of artistic expression such as lithography and carpet-making.

Joyce Vera Mary Ewart (1916–1964) was an Australian painter, graphic artist, and teacher. She was a finalist for the Archibald Prize in 1943, 1944, 1945 and 1948; for the Wynne Prize in 1943, 1945 and 1946; and the recipient of the Mosman Art Prize in 1948. Her works are held by the Art Gallery of New South Wales and have been included in several retrospectives and exhibitions. She mounted solo exhibitions at the Macquarie Galleries in 1942, 1943, 1944, 1948 and 1953. She founded the Workshop Art Centre at Willoughby, NSW where the main gallery bears her name and which offers the Joy Ewart Scholarship for Year 10 students and the Ewart Art Prize for works by Centre members. As Ewart included lithography and etching presses in the art centre, it was able to host The Print Circle collective of women artists.
Sydney Printmakers was an association of artists, founded in 1961, to further the art of print-making. It marked a renewal of interest in the technique after a lull of two decades occasioned by a boom in etching which began in the late 1930s.
