The Quadrangle (Antarctica)

The Quadrangle is an ice-covered area (essentially a glacial cirque) enclosed on three sides by rock ridges, but open to the south, lying between Mount Umbriel and Venus Glacier in eastern Alexander Island, Antarctica. The Quadrangle was first mapped by the Directorate of Overseas Surveys from satellite imagery supplied by the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in cooperation with the U.S. Geological Survey. The feature was so named by the United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee in description of its shape.

At the lower end the Dater Glacier coalesces with the terminus of the Ellen Glacier, the two emerging from the Sentinel Range as one stream just north of the Flowers Hills.

Imshaug Peninsula is a broad, snow-covered peninsula at the south side of Lehrke Inlet on the east coast of Palmer Land, Antarctica. It was mapped by the United States Geological Survey in 1974, and named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for Henry A. Imshaug, a United States Antarctic Research Program biologist working in a long-range biosystematic study of subantarctic floras with research at the Juan Fernández Islands, 1965–66; the Falkland Islands, 1967–68; the Chilean Archipelago, 1969; Campbell Island, 1969–70; and the Kerguelen Islands, 1970–71.

Ives Ice Rise is an ice rise about 1 mile (1.6 km) long at the head of Weber Inlet, an ice-filled inlet situated between Bennett Dome and Berlioz Point on the Beethoven Peninsula, situated in the southwest part of Alexander Island in Antarctica. It was mapped by the United States Geological Survey from U.S. Navy aerial photographs taken 1967–68 and Landsat imagery taken 1972–73. In association with the names of composers grouped in this area, it was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names after Charles Ives, the American composer.

Explorers Range is a large mountain range in the Bowers Mountains of Victoria Land, Antarctica, extending from Mount Bruce in the north to Carryer Glacier and McLin Glacier in the south. Named by the New Zealand Antarctic Place-Names Committee (NZ-APC) for the northern party of New Zealand Geological Survey Antarctic Expedition (NZGSAE), 1963–64, whose members carried out a topographical and geological survey of the area. The names of several party members are assigned to features in and about this range. All of the geographical features listed below lie situated on the Pennell Coast, a portion of Antarctica lying between Cape Williams and Cape Adare.

Jutulstraumen Glacier is a large glacier in Queen Maud Land, Antarctica, about 120 nautical miles (220 km) long, draining northward to the Fimbul Ice Shelf between the Kirwan Escarpment, Borg Massif and Ahlmann Ridge on the west and the Sverdrup Mountains on the east. It was mapped by Norwegian cartographers from surveys and air photos by the Norwegian–British–Swedish Antarctic Expedition (1949–52) and air photos by the Norwegian expedition (1958–59) and named Jutulstraumen. More specifically jutulen are troll-like figures from Norwegian folk tales. The ice stream reaches speeds of around 4 metres per day near the coast where it is heavily crevassed.

On the continent of Antarctica, the Aramis Range is the third range south in the Prince Charles Mountains, situated 11 miles southeast of the Porthos Range and extending for about 30 miles in a southwest–northeast direction. It was first visited in January 1957 by Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions (ANARE) southern party led by W.G. Bewsher, who named it for a character in Alexandre Dumas' novel The Three Musketeers, the most popular book read on the southern journey.

Wubbold Glacier is a steeply inclined glacier, 8 nautical miles (15 km) long, flowing south from the Havre Mountains, situated in the northern portion of Alexander Island, Antarctica. The glacier drains the north, west and southwest slopes of Mount Pontida, and flows into Lazarev Bay north of Mount Holt. It was photographed from the air by Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition in 1947 and was mapped from the photographs by Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1960. Named by Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for Commander J.H. Wubbold, USCG, commanding officer, USCGC Northwind, U.S. Navy Operation Deepfreeze, 1977.

Noville Peninsula is a high ice-covered peninsula about 30 nautical miles (60 km) long, between Peale and Murphy Inlets on the north side of Thurston Island in Antarctica. It was delineated from aerial photographs made by U.S. Navy Operation HIGHJUMP in December 1946, and named for George O. Noville, executive officer of the Byrd Antarctic Expedition, 1933–35.

Deimos Ridge is a prominent, narrow rocky spur of sandstone and shales, 3 nautical miles (6 km) southwest of Phobos Ridge and Mars Glacier in the southeast corner of Alexander Island, Antarctica. It was first seen from the air by Lincoln Ellsworth on November 23, 1935, and mapped from photos obtained on that flight by W.L.G. Joerg. It was first surveyed in 1949 by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey and named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee for its association with Mars Glacier, Deimos being the outer of two satellites of the planet Mars.

Grotto Glacier is a glacier on the east coast of Alexander Island, Antarctica, which flows east into George VI Sound between Belemnite Point and Ablation Point. It is 46 km (29 mi) long, 6 km (4 mi) wide where it emerges from the coastal mountains, and 13 km (8.1 mi) wide at its mouth. It was first photographed from the air on 23 November 1935, by Lincoln Ellsworth and mapped from these photographs by W.L.G. Joerg. It was roughly surveyed in 1936 by the British Graham Land Expedition and resurveyed in 1949 by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS). The glacier was so named by the FIDS because a sledge dog was rescued from a grotto-like crevasse in the glacier.

Planet Heights is a series of summits running along an ice-free ridge, extending 24 nautical miles (44 km) in a north-south direction between the southernmost extremity of the LeMay Range and George VI Sound in the east part of Alexander Island, Antarctica. Many landforms and nearby features are named in association with this mountain range; some of these include landforms named after astronomers, satellites, planets and other things related to astrology and astrophysics. The mountain range was first mapped from air photos taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE), 1947–48, by Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) in 1960. Named by the United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) from association with the nearby glaciers named for planets of the Solar System. The only planet that is not featured in any of these glaciers is the planet Earth, as there are no glaciers named "Earth Glacier" and this glacier does not exist.

Pluto Glacier is a glacier on the east coast of Alexander Island, Antarctica, 10 nautical miles (18 km) long and 4 nautical miles (7 km) wide, which flows east into George VI Sound to the north of Succession Cliffs. Although Pluto Glacier is not located within nearby Planet Heights, the glacier was named in association with the mountain range along with many other nearby glaciers that are named after planets of the Solar System. The glacier was first photographed from the air on November 23, 1935, by Lincoln Ellsworth and mapped from these photos by W.L.G. Joerg. Roughly surveyed in 1936 by the British Graham Land Expedition (BGLE). Named by the United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) for Pluto, then considered the ninth planet of the Solar System, following Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) surveys in 1948 and 1949.

Edwards Glacier is a glacier draining the east slopes of the Daniels Range between Thompson Spur and Schroeder Spur, in the Usarp Mountains of Victoria Land, Antarctica. This glacier was first mapped by the United States Geological Survey from surveys and U.S. Navy air photos, 1960–63, and was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for Lloyd N. Edwards, a United States Antarctic Research Program geologist at McMurdo Station, Hut Point Peninsula, Ross Island, 1967–68. The glacier lies situated on the Pennell Coast, a portion of Antarctica lying between Cape Williams and Cape Adare.

Garfield Glacier is a glacier, 6 nautical miles (11 km) long, flowing between the Peden Cliffs and Cox Point to the east side of Hull Bay on the coast of Marie Byrd Land, Antarctica. It was mapped by the United States Geological Survey from surveys and U.S. Navy air photos, 1959–65, and was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for Donald E. Garfield, who participated in deep core drilling activities at Byrd Station, 1967–68.

Mazza Point is a snow-covered headland lying between Brahms Inlet and Mendelssohn Inlet, marking the northwest end of Derocher Peninsula, a minor peninsula that extends in a northwest point from Beethoven Peninsula, situated in the southwest portion of Alexander Island, Antarctica. The headland was first mapped by the United States Geological Survey from U.S. Navy aerial photographs taken in 1967–68 and from U.S. Landsat imagery taken in 1972–73. It was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for Commander Joseph D. Mazza, U.S. Navy, Commanding Officer of Squadron VXE-6, May 1986 to May 1987.

Spartan Glacier is a short valley glacier lying between Callisto Cliffs and Tombaugh Cliffs on the east side of Alexander Island, Antarctica. The glacier was first mapped by the Overseas Surveys Directorate from satellite imagery supplied by U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration in cooperation with U.S. Geological Survey. Named by United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee after the British dog team known as "The Spartans," used in ascending this glacier, 1969. This is one of the few glaciers in Antarctica to be named after a dog team.

Horrocks Block is a large rectangular outcrop that is composed mainly of sandstone, lying on the north side of Venus Glacier, 2 nautical miles (4 km) southwest of the Keystone Cliffs, on the east side of Alexander Island, Antarctica. It was mapped by the Directorate of Overseas Surveys from satellite imagery supplied by the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration in cooperation with the U.S. Geological Survey, and was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee from association with Venus Glacier after Jeremiah Horrocks, the British astronomer who predicted and first observed a transit of Venus, in 1639.

The Keystone Cliffs are a set of cliffs, 610 metres (2,000 ft) high, marking the east face of the sedimentary ridge between Mercury Glacier and Venus Glacier, on the east coast of Alexander Island, Antarctica. The coast in this vicinity was first seen from the air by Lincoln Ellsworth on November 23, 1935, and roughly mapped from photos obtained on that flight by W.L.G. Joerg. The cliffs were roughly surveyed in 1936 by the British Graham Land Expedition and resurveyed in 1948 by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS). They were so named by the FIDS because the geologic structures revealed in these cliffs provided the key to the general tectonic structure of the area.
