The Roving Kind was a nationally syndicated American television show distributed by Bill Burrud Productions, which aired on KCOP-TV , Los Angeles, from 1964 to 1968. The series made its debut on September 24, 1965. [1] The show featured producers Milas Hinshaw [2] and Buddy Noonan, who produced, filmed, and narrated the episodes.

The Roving Kind travel series was produced for a family audience, showing how families could travel on a budget. During filming, Buddy Noonan and his wife Ginger Noonan [3] traveled with their children throughout the United States, including Hawaii, [4] and also on location in Mexico. [5] The series featured ghost towns, national monuments, state parks, tourist attractions, and state historical sites. The series was shot on 16 mm film.

Cast members

The cast included Milas and Peggy Hinshaw, and Buddy and Ginger Noonan. Director David Dunn [6] scored the show with Roger Miller's song, "King of the Road". Later, Miller went on to produce his own series and decided to use the song for in that.

Overmyer Network Former U.S. television network

The Overmyer Network, later the United Network, was a television network. It was intended to be a fourth national commercial network in the United States, competing with the Big Three television networks. The network was founded by self-made millionaire Daniel H. Overmyer, who started WDHO-TV, in his birthplace, Toledo, Ohio, which signed on the air on May 3, 1966. Overmyer had construction permits for several other UHF stations that were intended to be owned-and-operated stations of the new network. Before going on the air, the majority interest in those stations was sold to AVC Corporation in March 1967. A social conservative, Overmyer decided to create a nationwide hookup, enticing existing stations with a 50-50 profit split with potential affiliates. Under the leadership of former ABC television president Oliver Treyz, the ON was scheduled to debut in the fall of 1967 with anywhere from 75 to 125 affiliates with an 8 hour broadcasting day.

Co-hosts included Milas Hinshaw and Buddy Noonan, who was executive producer. The Happy Wanderer theme song by Friedrich W. Moller, with lyrics by Antonia Ridge, was scored by David Dunn Productions of Hollywood, CA. Sponsored by local area Ford dealers, the show received an ARB and Nielsen rating of 15 as of June 2, 1965, making that series the most popular local television show in Southern California. Television personality Huell Howser later featured Slim and Henrietta Barnard on his show, Visiting with Huell Howser.

Buddy Noonan

Buddy Noonan, born Earl Seely Noonan in Glendale, California was an American cinematographer, actor, entertainer, and television producer for nationally syndicated television series such as The Happy Wanderers, Wanderlust, and The Roving Kind, shot on location throughout the United States and Mexico. These were distributed by Bill Burrud Productions and originally aired on KCOP-TV in Los Angeles. Noonan appeared in episodes of the Treasure series, later re-run on The Discovery Channel.

KMEC-TV Former TV station in Dallas, Texas

KMEC-TV, UHF analog channel 33, was a television station licensed to Dallas, Texas, United States. The station broadcast in two stints, from 1967 to 1968 as KMEC-TV and in 1972 as KBFI-TV. The station struggled in both incarnations and was ultimately sold to the Christian Broadcasting Network in 1973. CBN relaunched the station as KXTX-TV that April, but KXTX-TV remained on channel 33 for just seven months; that November, after CBN bought the assets, programming inventory and license of KDTV, it moved KXTX to that channel.
