The Seeker of Orient or The Orientalist is a 2019 documentary film directed by Masoud Taheri which deals with the life, works and thoughts of Henry Corbin. [1] [2] [3] [4]
This film is a product of Chehardad Film and the Documentary and Experimental Film Center (DEFC), and the filmmakers have traveled to six countries to prepare it: France (twice), Switzerland, Italy, Turkey (twice), America and Japan.
Philosophers and scholars like Mohammad Ali Amirmoezi, Christian Jambet, Pierre Lory, Daniel Proulx, Yann Richard, Jean-Claude Carrière, Michel Cassé, Nahal Tajaddod, Hermann Landolt, Jean-Francois Perouse, Seyed Hossein Nasr, Dariush Shaygan, Karim Mojtahedi, Enshallah Rahmati, Shahram Pazuki, Hassan Seyedarab, Mostafa Malekian, Gholamhossein Ebrahimi Dinani, Bahman Zakipour, Alireza Saati and Sadegh Pulestios are featured in the film.
This film was screened on February 7, 2018, with the attendance of Philippe Thiébaud, the then French ambassador to Iran, at Ivan Shams. [5] A review session for this documentary was held on February 8, 2018 at the National Archives and Library Organization, with Inshallah Rahmati, Ehsan Shariati, and Reza Kohken disussing the film. [6] Reza Koohkan believes that some aspects of Corbin's life have been neglected in this film. Ehsan Shariati, while praising the documentary, believes that the filmmaker did not have access to some research sources at the Sorbonne University about Corbin.
Yaser Mirdamadi also discussed the film in a review on the BBC Persian website. He considers one of the interesting points of the film to be Daniel Proulx's statements about Corbin's membership in Freemasonry. [7] Morteza Karder also wrote a review about the film in Hamshahri newspaper. He believes that the film "does not go to repetitive characters to hear the usual words". [8]

Close-Up was also ranked one of the 50 greatest movies of all time in the famous decennial Sight & Sound poll conducted in 2012.
"Shihāb ad-Dīn" Yahya ibn Habash Suhrawardī (1154–1191) was a philosopher and founder of the Iranian school of Illuminationism, an important school in Islamic philosophy. The "light" in his "Philosophy of Illumination" is the source of knowledge. He is referred to by the honorific title Shaikh al-ʿIshraq "Master of Illumination" and Shaikh al-Maqtul "the Murdered Master", in reference to his execution for heresy. Mulla Sadra, the Persian sage of the Safavid era described Suhrawardi as the "Reviver of the Traces of the Pahlavi (Iranian) Sages", and Suhrawardi, in his magnum opus "The Philosophy of Illumination", thought of himself as a reviver or resuscitator of the ancient tradition of Persian wisdom.

Henry Corbin was a French philosopher, theologian, and Iranologist, professor of Islamic studies at the École pratique des hautes études. He was influential in extending the modern study of traditional Islamic philosophy from early falsafa to later and "mystical" figures such as Suhrawardi, Ibn Arabi, and Mulla Sadra Shirazi.

Sayyid Morteza Avini was an Iranian documentary filmmaker, author, and theoretician of "Islamic Cinema." He studied Architecture at Tehran University in 1965. During the Iranian Revolution, Avini started his artistic career as a director of documentary films, and is considered a prominent war filmmaker. He made over 80 films on the Iran–Iraq War. According to Agnes Devictor, Avini invented original cinematography methods, depicting the esoteric side of the Iran–Iraq War in terms of Shia mystical thought. Most of his work was devoted to reflecting how bassijis perceived the war and their role in it. His most famous work is the documentary series Ravayat-e Fath, which was filmed during the Iran–Iraq War. He was killed by a landmine explosion in 1993, while filming. He was described as a Shahid (martyr) after his death, and Ayatollah Ali Khamenei declared him "the master of martyred literati". The 20th day of Farvardin is entitled the day of "Islamic Revolution art" in his honor.
Reza Allamehzadeh is an Iranian-born Dutch filmmaker, film critic and writer who lives in the Netherlands. He is primarily known for his films about refugees, such as The Guests of Hotel Astoria (1988), and the documentary Holy Crime (1994), about the murder of opposition figures in Europe by the Islamic regime in Iran.
