The Shovel vs. the Howling Bones is Lincoln Durham's debut studio album, released on January 31, 2012 by Rayburn Publishing. Four of the songs on the album are from his 2010 EP, and the other seven are original compositions. [8] Durham was mentored and produced by singer-songwriter Ray Wylie Hubbard, and co-produced by George Reiff. [9] Durham played the majority of the instruments, including a 1929 Gibson HG22 guitar, a bird feeder, a hacksaw, and oil pans. [10] Drums were performed by Rick Richards. Other guest musicians from Austin on the album were Derek O'Brien Jeff Plankenhorn, Bucca Allen, [11] and Idgy Vaughn, plus Lincoln Durham's wife, Alissa. [12] [3]

Cotton Mather is an American rock band from Austin, Texas, founded by Robert Harrison in 1990. Although the group started out as an experimental duo featuring guitar and cello, they evolved into a four-piece rock group with a sound centered around guitars and vocal harmonies. The group was initially active from 1990 to 2003, but returned from a nine-year hiatus in 2012 and have been active ever since. They have drawn comparisons to the Beatles, Elvis Costello and the Attractions, Squeeze, and Guided by Voices. In his 2007 book, Shake Some Action, John Borack rated the Kontiki album at number 26 of his Top 200 Power Pop Albums of all time, comparing the album to Revolver-era Beatles, Big Star, and The Apples in Stereo. NME suggested Cotton Mather might be "the most exciting guitar pop band since Supergrass."

Durham plays a variety of instruments on the album, playing his guitar and other instruments including a cigar box guitar, an old Samsonite case, piano, lap steel guitar, harmonica, and a banjo.

Durham uses an array of instruments for the album, including guitar, cigar box guitar, pump organ, fiddle, and sheet metal. Most of the music on the album is generated by Durham, but he uses Chris Hausler for drums and mini Marvin on some of the tracks, and his wife Alissa provides some backing vocals.
