The Stag is a student magazine published by students of the University of Surrey online and in print.
The newspaper was established under the name Bare Facts in 1967. In 1968, the university was to move from its home in Battersea Park, South-West London, to Stag Hill, in Guildford, Surrey. Concerns were raised at a lunchtime Students Union meeting over troubles in communication between the students on each site while the move was in progress. Outgoing Union President, Bob Matthews, suggested a one-page newsletter covering both campuses, which would carry messages by clubs and societies, as well as general notices from the students' union. The first few hundred issues were usually edited by the Union Executive, before an annual editor was appointed.
The last edition published under the name Bare Facts was in September 2008. Then-editor Claire Worgan chose to rebrand the newspaper as The Stag. In 2015 The Stag became a monthly magazine. In 2016 the University of Surrey Students' Union's Board of Trustees voted in favour of changing The Stag from a 'core union function' to a society.
Each year, with each change of committee, the logo and cover layout of the magazine have changed. [1]
Writers for The Stag have also contributed under this title to other Guildford and Surrey publications, contributing from a student perspective and with comments on university life. [2]
In 2018 the committee decided to revive the website and make it an active, integral part of the magazine's functioning by publishing a new article at least once a week.
Bare Facts won several notable awards, including the National Student Journalism Awards in 2002 and 2003 for Best Student Campaign. [3] The 2002 campaign related to increases in campus rent, whilst the 2003 "Lights, Camera, Action" campaign related to student safety on and near campus.
In 2017, The Stag, now a magazine, was shortlisted for the 'Best Design (Magazine)' by the National Student Publication Association.
In 2019, The Stag magazine won Most Improved Society at the Union Ball Awards after developing an active website and collaborating with the Students' Union on the 2019 Varsity programme.
The University of Surrey is a public research university in Guildford, Surrey, England. The university received its royal charter in 1966, along with a number of other institutions following recommendations in the Robbins Report. The institution was previously known as Battersea College of Technology and was located in Battersea Park, London. Its roots however, go back to Battersea Polytechnic Institute, founded in 1891 to provide further and higher education in London, including its poorer inhabitants. Nouse is a student newspaper and website at the University of York. It is the oldest registered society of, and funded by, the University of York Students' Union. Nouse was founded in 1964 by student Nigel Fountain, some twenty years before its rival York Vision. The newspaper is printed three times in each of the Autumn and Spring terms, and twice in the Summer term, with frequent website updates in between print runs. As of January 2020, Nouse has printed 491 editions.
Stag Radio is the radio station run by the students of the University of Surrey in Guildford, Surrey, England, which broadcasts on 1350AM during term-time. It is a long term Restricted Service Licensed broadcaster operating under a Low-power AM licence.

The Hoya, founded in 1920, is the oldest and largest student newspaper of Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., serving as the university’s newspaper of record. The Hoya is a student-run paper that prints every Friday and publishes online daily throughout the year, with a print circulation of 4,000 during the academic year. The newspaper has four main editorial sections: News, Opinion, Sports and The Guide, a weekly arts and lifestyle magazine. Exeposé is the official student-run newspaper of the University of Exeter. With an estimated print circulation of around 3,500. Exeposé is free and published fortnightly during term time. Its sections include news, features, lifestyle, science, and sport, with review sections covering films, music, arts and literature, and games.
The Cord is a student newspaper at Wilfrid Laurier University. Founded in 1926, it features stories about current events on campus and the community as well as student life, sports, arts and opinion. The paper's website compiles all the content from the print edition as well as web-exclusive content. The Cord publishes every Wednesday of the fall and winter semester and monthly over the summer.
The State Press is the independent, student-operated news publication of Arizona State University. In August 2014, it became an all-digital publication. It published a free newspaper every weekday until January 2013, at which point its print distribution was reduced to once per week. The editorial board announced that ASU Student Media will begin to focus on "a host of new digital products and special print products."
London Student is a student paper, originally the official student newspaper of the University of London Union. It began publishing in 1979 and was at one point the largest student-run newspaper in Europe. The paper stopped publishing in 2014 after the University of London withdrew funding, but relaunched itself online the following year under a new editorial team. It is now an independent publication with ultimate control over content and appointments vested in the editorial team as a worker co-operative.

The Stag Hill Campus is the main campus of the University of Surrey in the UK, and sits on its namesake geographic feature, Stag Hill, along with Guildford Cathedral – which is directly accessible from the campus by two hidden pathways. The campus is known for its multiple statues and complex tiered design.
