The Tikiyaki Orchestra is a seven piece modern exotica band that combines the sounds of traditional exotica with the Music Of Hawaii, surf music, crime jazz, lounge music and space age pop to create a soundtrack for the Tiki sub-culture. [1] [2]

History

Since 2008 they have performed at most of the most important Tiki festivals including Tiki Oasis, and The Hukilau, and their music has become synonymous with the contemporary scene and heard on important playlists, such as the soundtrack to Disneyland's Trader Sam's Enchanted Tiki Bar. [3] [4]

They utilize an orchestration of electric guitar, steel guitar, vibraphone, bass, 2 keyboards, percussion, and drum kit, with founder, multi-instrumentalist and composer Jim Bacchi as the leader. [5]

The band has appeared at some of the most renowned and legendary Tiki temples including The Mai-Kai in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Bahooka in Rosemead, CA, Don The Beachcomber in Sunset Beach, CA, Trader Vic's in Emeryville, CA, Trader Vic's in Palo Alto, CA, The Caliente Tropics Resort in Palm Springs, CA, Humphrey's Half Moon Inn, The Hanalei Hotel and the Bali Hai in San Diego, CA. Tiki culture is an American-originated art, music, and entertainment movement inspired by Polynesian, Melanesian, and Micronesian cultures. Inspired by Oceanian art, influential cultures to Tiki culture include Australasia, Melanesia, Micronesia, Polynesia, the Caribbean Islands, and Hawaii. The name comes from Tiki, the Māori name for the first human, often represented in the form of hei-tiki, a pendant and important taonga. The hei-tiki was often appropriated by Europeans as a commercialised good luck charm, hence the name of Tiki culture. Despite spanning over 10,000 miles and including many different unrelated cultures, religions, and languages, Tiki aesthetic is considered by some to be amalgamated into one "fantasia of trans-Pacific cultures" and "colonial nostalgia". Martin Denny was an American pianist, composer, and arranger. Known as the "father of exotica," he was a multi-instrumentalist and could play a number of percussion instruments. In a long career that saw him performing up to 3 weeks prior to his death, he toured the world popularizing his brand of lounge music which included exotic percussion, imaginative rearrangements of popular songs, and original songs that celebrated Tiki culture.

Arthur Lyman was a Hawaiian jazz vibraphone and marimba player. His group popularized a style of faux-Polynesian music during the 1950s and 1960s which later became known as exotica. His albums became favorite stereo-effect demonstration discs during the early days of the stereophonic LP album for their elaborate and colorful percussion, deep bass and 3-dimensional recording soundstage. Lyman was known as "the King of Lounge music."

Exotica is a musical genre, named after the 1957 Martin Denny album of the same name that was popular during the 1950s to mid-1960s with Americans who came of age during World War II. The term was coined by Simon "Si" Waronker, Liberty Records co-founder and board chairman. The musical colloquialism exotica means tropical ersatz, the non-native, pseudo experience of insular Oceania, Southeast Asia, Hawaii, the Amazon basin, the Andes, the Caribbean and tribal Africa. Denny described the musical style as "a combination of the South Pacific and the Orient...what a lot of people imagined the islands to be like...it's pure fantasy though." While the South Seas forms the core region, exotica reflects the "musical impressions" of every place from standard travel destinations to the mythical "shangri-las" dreamt of by armchair safari-ers.

The Blue Hawaiians are a Los Angeles band that combines elements of surf music, exotica and lounge. They formed in 1994 to play at the opening of their friend Michelle's Hollywood club, The Lava Lounge. They soon gained recognition with the help of the connection of one of their earliest fans, Quentin Tarantino, and appearances on the soundtrack of the television series Friends and the 1996 film Sex. The group have since released several albums which have generally fared well with critics. The band also composed and recorded music for the cartoon series SpongeBob SquarePants, and their song "A Cheat" was featured in an advertisement for Guess Jeans.

Mr. Bali Hai is a tiki drink served in a special mug at the Bali Hai restaurant on Shelter Island in San Diego, California. The drink has had different recipes over the years, but a prominent version from the 1970s calls for 1 1/2 oz of dark Jamaican rum, 1 oz light Puerto Rican rum, 3/4 oz coffee flavored brandy, 1 1/2 oz unsweetened pineapple juice, 1 oz lemon juice, and 1/2 oz of sugar syrup. The mug has the same name as the drink, Mr. Bali Hai, and comes in the shape of a headhunter's head with a removable lid.

The Fog Cutter is a vintage tiki cocktail frequently attributed to being invented by Victor Bergeron that calls for a mixture of several liquors, the juice of lemon and oranges, orgeat syrup, and cream sherry. It is high in alcoholic content and has been called the "Long Island Iced Tea of exotic drinks." It has historically been served in special Fog Cutter ceramic mugs.
