The Twelve Tribes of Hattie is the 2012 debut novel of American author Ayana Mathis. [1] [2] In December 2012, the novel was selected for Oprah's Book Club 2.0. [3] [4] The Twelve Tribes of Hattie revolves around the matriarch of a black family of the Great Migration and her children and grandchildren.

In the March/April 2013 issue of Bookmarks , reporting on reviews from several publications out of five: Boston Globe , Columbus Dispatch , New York Times , Washington Post , and USA Today gave it a four and Los Angeles Times gave it a two. The magazine's critical summary reads: "Most readers, however, will find a masterfully written tale of family strength and a nation in turmoil--life affirming even in its darkest moments". [5]
