In ghostlore, a haunted house or ghosthouse is a house or other building often perceived as being inhabited by disembodied spirits of the deceased who may have been former residents or were familiar with the property. Parapsychologists attribute haunting to the spirits of the dead and the effect of violent or tragic events in the building's past such as murder, accidental death, or suicide. More scientific explanations for the perception that a house is haunted include misinterpreting noises naturally present in structures, waking dreams, suggestibility, and the effect of toxic substances in environments that can cause hallucinations.
"Bennington Triangle" is a phrase coined by New England author Joseph A. Citro during a public radio broadcast in 1992 to denote an area of southwestern Vermont within which a number of people went missing between 1945 and 1950. This was further popularized in two books, including Shadow Child, in which he devoted chapters to discussion of these disappearances and various items of folklore surrounding the area. According to Citro, the area shares characteristics with the Bridgewater Triangle in neighboring Massachusetts.

Deus-X is a 1994 horror novel written by Joe Citro. Of all his novels, Citro has repeatedly described it as being his darkest and most intricate. The idea for the book came from Citro's love for and fascination with the occult and paranormal. After researching and documenting countless ghost stories, UFO sightings, and general accounts of strange activity, Citro was struck by how interesting it would be if all these various phenomena were linked somehow. Further inspiration came from the Firesign Theatre album, "Everything You Know is Wrong." Citro found himself chilled by those words and sought to write a story which exposed everything we thought to be true as devious manipulations. The story ties together UFOs, government conspiracies, demonic possession, and Virgin Mary sightings, all with H. P. Lovecraft sensibilities. The much-discussed ending is both shocking and darkly nihilistic. The book was re-released in 2003 by Hardscrabble books under its full title of Deus-X: The Reality Conspiracy.
Ghost hunting is the process of investigating locations that are reported to be haunted by ghosts. Typically, a ghost-hunting team will attempt to collect evidence supporting the existence of paranormal activity. Ghost hunters use a variety of electronic devices, including EMF meters, digital thermometers, both handheld and static digital video cameras, including thermographic and night vision cameras, as well as digital audio recorders. Other more traditional techniques are also used, such as conducting interviews and researching the history of allegedly haunted sites. Ghost hunters may also refer to themselves as "paranormal investigators."

While it was preceded by his novel Lake Monsters which is full of Horror, Fiction, and Mystery which he published before Shadow Child. Shadow Child was first published on July 1, 1987 then it was later published on September 1, 1998 by University Press of New England. Shadow Child basically shows how mysterious disappearances, and death can impact someone.

He is the founder of the popular website Ghost Hounds, which in 2001 was featured in an Emmy award-winning Turner documentary "Interact Atlanta - 'Ghost Hounds' ". The series was created by Paige McKenzie, Nick Hagen, and Mercedes Rose, and is produced by Coat Tale Productions. The series first launched in 2010 and its premiere episode was uploaded on December 10, 2010. The Haunting of Sunshine Girl quickly rose in popularity and between December 2010 to October 2011 the show received more than 4.3 million total hits. The average length of the episodes is about two minutes but can run less depending on the episode and content.

Haunting: Australia is an Australian paranormal television series that premiered on 3 February 2014 on Syfy. The series was commissioned by SF in July 2013, with production beginning in August 2013 and set to premiere on the network in 2014. However, following the closure of SF on 31 December 2013 and the launch of Syfy as its replacement, the series instead premiered on the newly launched Syfy channel on 3 February 2014.
