The Violet May

The Violet May are an English 6-piece rock act from Sheffield, England. Formed in early 2009, The Violet May quickly earned a reputation for their wild live shows and were named by Alan McGee in The Guardian as one of his "Top 15 Tips for 2010". [1]

In 2010, The Violet May released their debut single "Bright Or Better" as a limited edition 7" vinyl single on Oh! Inverted World Records, along with an accompanying video shot by Douglas Hart of Jesus and Mary Chain in Peter Stringfellow's London nightclub.

Following the release of "Bright Or Better", the band appeared on Steve Lamacq’s BBC 6Music show as his "New Favourite Band". [2]

The Violet May also headlined London’s Koko (venue) [3] for Club NME, undertook a headline residency at Alan McGee’s Death Disco clubnight in London, played at Leeds Festival and Secret Garden Party, and then headed to Italy for a sold out tour through Rome, Venice and Florence.

In early 2011, The Violet May toured in Germany with The Chapman Family before releasing their debut EP entitled "TV", along with a single of the same name. The EP was recorded in Sheffield's 2Fly Studios with producer Alan Smyth, who had previously worked with other notable bands from the city including Pulp, Arctic Monkeys, Reverend & The Makers, Richard Hawley and The Long Blondes.

Later in the same year, The Violet May supported Death In Vegas and performed their second headline show at London's Koko venue before embarking on their own UK headline tour. The band also played two shows at Iceland Airwaves Festival in Reykjavik.

History

The band's name was taken from an independent record store in Sheffield in the 1970s called Violet May. A book documenting the store called Shades of Violet [4] has been written by John Firminger and Gus Chapman and features an introduction by Sheffield singer-songwriter Richard Hawley, formerly of Sheffield acts longpigs and Pulp.

The Violet May's frontman and lead vocalist Chris McClure was the disheveled face on the front cover of the 2006 debut Arctic Monkeys album Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not , [5] and is also the brother of Jon McClure, the lead singer and frontman of Sheffield act Reverend and The Makers. Chris McClure also appeared on the cover of Toddla T's 2009 album, Skanky Skanky .

John Kubicki, formerly of Sheffield act Barricades, is The Violet May's main songwriter as well as playing guitar, synth, and vocals on all the tracks. Jono How, formerly of another Sheffield act Black Light Theatre plays lead guitar, Dan Booth plays bass guitar and Al Whitaker is the band's drummer.

Arctic Monkeys are an English rock band formed in Sheffield in 2002. The group consists of Alex Turner, Jamie Cook, Nick O'Malley, and Matt Helders. Former band member Andy Nicholson left the band in 2006 shortly after their debut album was released.

Elastica

Elastica were a British rock band formed in London in 1992. The band were influenced by punk rock, post-punk and new wave music. They are best known for their 1995 album Elastica, which produced singles that charted in the United Kingdom and the United States, including their highest-charting US Hot 100 hit "Connection". They split in 2001, roughly a year after releasing their second LP.

Alex Turner

Alexander David Turner is an English musician, singer, songwriter, and record producer. He is best known as the frontman and principal songwriter of the rock band Arctic Monkeys, with whom he has released six albums. He has also recorded with his side project The Last Shadow Puppets and as a solo artist.

Matt Helders

Alan Smyth is an English record producer from Sheffield, England. He has worked with a number of bands, including Pulp, Arctic Monkeys, Reverend and The Makers, The Long Blondes, Milburn, Richard Hawley, The Fever Club, The Scaramanga Six, Smokers Die Younger, Monkey Swallows the Universe, The Lodger, Little Man Tate, 65daysofstatic, Little Lost David, Albany, Dead Like Harry, The Silverfish, The Magi, Dead World Leaders, Little Ze, Jack's Attic, Smiling Ivy, Pink Sharabang and The Hurriers. Favourite Worst Nightmare is the second studio album by English rock band Arctic Monkeys, released on 23 April 2007 by Domino Recording Company. Recorded in east London's Miloco Studios with producers James Ford and Mike Crossey, the album was preceded by the release of "Brianstorm" on 16 April 2007. This is the band's first album with bassist Nick O'Malley, replacing their previous bassist Andy Nicholson, who left the band before the North America tour of the band's debut studio album.

Vitamin Z were an English band, formed in 1982 by vocalist Geoff Barradale and bassist Nick Lockwood. Their biggest hit "Burning Flame" charted in the UK and US, but their one other hit in the UK, "Every Time That I See You", did not chart in the US. Geoff Barradale now serves as manager for the Arctic Monkeys.

"He Said He Loved Me" is the second single by Reverend and The Makers, from their debut album The State of Things. The song features Jon McClure and Laura Manuel on lead vocals. The single was released on 26 August 2007 on download only and later released on CD and 7" vinyl on 3 September.

Jon McClure, known as The Reverend, is an English musician. He is the lead singer and frontman of Reverend and The Makers, and ex-vocalist of 1984 and Judan Suki. He says that the name "Reverend" became his moniker because "I'm a big mouth and always running on at people".

Death Ramps

"Death Ramps" is an alias for British indie rock band Arctic Monkeys. They usually go under this name in collaboration with Miles Kane and fellow Sheffield artist Richard Hawley, and have released five tracks, all B-sides to Arctic Monkeys singles.

Miles Kane

Miles Peter Kane is an English musician, best known as a solo artist and the co-frontman of the Last Shadow Puppets. He was also the former frontman of the Rascals, before the band announced their break-up in August 2009.

The Crookes

The Crookes were a British indie rock band who formed in Sheffield in 2007. They released their first single "A Collier's Wife" in 2009 as part of the Too Pure singles club, followed by single "Bloodshot Days" that was released on Heist or Hit Records in 2010. Signed to London independent record label Fierce Panda Records, they have subsequently released four albums, Chasing After Ghosts (2011), Hold Fast (2012), Soapbox (2014), and Lucky Ones (2016) along with an extended EP Dreams Of Another Day (2010).

Reverend Soundsystem or RSS are an English 'indiestep' band that formed in Sheffield in 2010. The band's vocalist Jon McClure had been playing under the Reverend Soundsystem pseudonym for some time in between Reverend and The Makers albums, and he recruited his Makers-bandmate and wife Laura McClure to join him, with Ocelot and Maticmouth Sheffield MC and former classmate of Jon.

Reverend and the Makers are an English rock band from Sheffield, South Yorkshire. The band is fronted by Jon McClure, nicknamed "The Reverend". Their debut album, The State of Things (2007), helped them gain success in Britain and spawned the UK top 10 single "Heavyweight Champion of the World". The band released their second album, A French Kiss in the Chaos (2009), which led to them being invited to support Oasis on their final tour, playing venues such as Wembley Stadium. The band's third studio album, @Reverend_Makers, was released in 2012, and their fourth studio album, ThirtyTwo, was released in 2014.

Andy Nicholson is an English musician, DJ, record producer, and photographer, best known as the original bass guitarist of the Sheffield band Arctic Monkeys, which he left in 2006. In 2008, he founded Mongrel with Jon McClure of Reverend and The Makers. In 2009, he became the bassist for ex-Milburn frontman Joe Carnall's band The Book Club, but left later that year to join Reverend and The Makers. He is currently producing and performing in hip hop group Clubs & Spades with Maticmouth from Reverend Soundsystem.

Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino is the sixth studio album by English rock band Arctic Monkeys, released on 11 May 2018 by Domino Recording Company. It was written by band frontman Alex Turner in 2016 on a Steinway Vertegrand piano in his Los Angeles home, and features a rich sound that embodies psychedelic pop, lounge pop, space pop, and glam rock, as well as elements of jazz. It is a major departure from the band's previous guitar-heavy work, being less accessible than its internationally successful predecessor, AM (2013). It was produced in Los Angeles, Paris and London by frequent Arctic Monkeys collaborator James Ford and Turner, alongside a wide array of guest musicians including Tom Rowley, Loren Humphrey, James Righton, Zach Dawes, Tyler Parkford and Cam Avery.
