The Woman Next Door is a 2016 novel written by Yewande Omotoso. It is Omotoso's second novel, and her first to be published in the US. The story focuses on two elderly widows in Cape Town, one black and one white, who begin as acrimonious neighbors but come to know each other better after an accident. The novel was first conceived in 2012, and draws on Omotoso's research on Apartheid in South Africa and Jewish history in Cape Town. Thematically, the novel combines a serious examination of post-Apartheid reconciliation with witty debates between its characters.
The novel is set in South Africa. The story revolves around the lives of two women, both widows in their 80s: Hortensia James, an international fashion designer who is the only black homeowner in the suburb, and Marion Agostino, a white Jewish woman who is an architect. Hortensia and Marion are neighbors in the fictional affluent neighbourhood of Katterjin in Cape Town. However, their contrasting backgrounds and personalities create a tension-filled dynamic between them. After an accident renders them immobile, they discuss their pasts, their regrets, and their shared experiences, leading to a deeper understanding of each other's lives and struggles.
Omotoso found inspiration for one of the characters, Hortensia, at the funeral of her grandfather in Barbados in 2012. During this trip, she spoke with her grandmother and began reflecting on the experience of old age. [1] She started writing the novel between 2013 and 2014. [2] In preparation, Omotoso conducted interviews, read news from the Cape Argus and Cape Times during the period of Apartheid in South Africa and spent time in a Jewish old-people's home in Cape Town, as well as visiting District Six Museum, the Jewish Museum and the Slave Lodge. The Woman Next Door was published in 2016 by Chatto and Windus in the United Kingdom, Picador in the United States, Farafina in Nigeria and Penguin Random House in South Africa. It was Omotoso's second novel and her first to be published in the US. [3] : 1 [4]
Hortensia and Marion's conflicts over the course of the novel, according to Danette Frederique, serve to reveal "the skeletons in South Africa's post-Apartheid closet, including land rights, reconciliation and white guilt". [5] Regarding the novel's treatment of poet-Apartheid reconciliation, Omotoso said "I didn't want to write a book with a very simple, happy ending ... I think it's important to remember, as we connect and repair, that it's delicate." [6]
The plot of the novel, including the revelation of secrets, proceeds slowly and gradually. Despite its serious themes, it incorporates lighter storylines and a sense of humor. [5] It has been described as "wickedly funny," especially for the verbal sparring between Marion and Hortensia. [7]
Publishers Weekly referred to it as "this charming, touching, occasionally radiant tale of two prickly octogenarians: two women, one black and one white, neighbours who discover after 20 years of exchanging digs and insults that they might help each other... Omotoso captures the changing racial relations since the 1950s, as well as the immigrant experience through personal detail and small psychological insights into mixed emotions, the artist's eye, and the widow's remorse. Hers is a fresh voice as adept at evoking the peace of walking up a kopje as the cruelty of South Africa's past." [8] The Irish Independent described it as "a finely observed account of female prejudice, redemption and that often elusive commodity – friendship." [9] Kirkus Reviews called the book "[a] pleasing tale of reconciliation laced with acid humor and a cheery avoidance of sentimentality." [10] Olatoun Williams of Borders Literature Online called it "a thought provoking, and immensely readable fictional biography." [3] : 3
In The Harvard Crimson , it received a 3.5 star rating, citing that it "reads more like a beach book than a serious piece of literature, the novel's discussion of difficult topics such as racism, apartheid, grief, and the past add a depth that a lesser novel would lack", [4] while Freya Neason of Palatinate gave a less positive review, citing as shortcomings the storyline, writing style and the characters' "constant grumbles and criticisms quickly [becoming] cumbersome". [11]
The Woman Next Door was shortlisted for the University of Johannesburg Prize in 2016 [12] and the Sunday Times Barry Ronge Fiction Prize in 2017, [13] was longlisted for the 2017 Bailey's Women's Prize for Fiction, [14] [15] and went on to be shortlisted for the 2018 International Dublin Literary Award. Nadine Gordimer was a South African writer and political activist. She received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1991, recognised as a writer "who through her magnificent epic writing has ... been of very great benefit to humanity".
Zoë Wicomb is a South African author and academic who has lived in the UK since the 1970s. In 2013, she was awarded the inaugural Windham–Campbell Literature Prize for her fiction.

Bankole Ajibabi Omotoso, also known as Kole Omotoso, was a Nigerian writer and intellectual best known for his works of fiction and in South Africa as the "Yebo Gogo man" in adverts for the telecommunications company Vodacom. His written work is known for its dedication and commitment to fusing a socio-political reappraisal of Africa and respect for human dignity into most of his works.
Miriam Tlali was a South African novelist. She was the first black woman in South Africa to publish an English-language novel, Muriel at Metropolitan, in 1975. She was also one of the first to write about Soweto. She also wrote Amandla in 1980 which focuses on the Soweto Uprising in 1976, as well as a collection of short stories called Soweto Stories which was published in 1989. Most of her writing was originally banned by the South African apartheid regime.
Nadia Davids is a South African playwright, novelist, and author of short stories and screenplays. Her work has been published, produced, and performed in Southern Africa, Europe, and the United States. She was a Philip Leverhulme Prize winner in 2013. Her play What Remains won five Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards. In 2017, Davids was elected president of PEN South Africa, serving in the role until July 2024.
The Sunday Times CNA Literary Awards are awarded annually to South African writers by the South African weekly newspaper the Sunday Times. They comprise the Sunday Times CNA Literary Award for Non-fiction and the Sunday Times CNA Literary Award for Fiction, and are awarded for full-length non-fiction works and novels, respectively. Both winners receive R100 000. Ivan Vladislavic is the only person to have won both the fiction and the non-fiction award.
Deborah Levy is a British novelist, playwright and poet. She initially concentrated on writing for the theatre – her plays were staged by the Royal Shakespeare Company – before focusing on prose fiction. In 2014, Wanner was named on the Africa39 list of 39 Sub-Saharan African writers aged under 40 with potential and talent to define trends in African literature.
The University of Johannesburg Prize for South African Writing, also known as the UJ Prize, is awarded annually by the University of Johannesburg (UJ) for the best creative works in each of five categories: English, Afrikaans, Zulu, Northern Sotho, and Literary Translation. There are usually two prizes, a main prize and a debut prize, in each category. The prizes are not linked to a specific genre, and each year's prize rewards work published in the previous year. The winner of the main prize in each category receives R70 000, the winner of each debut prize receives R35 000, and the winner of the Literary Translation prize receives R50 000.
The 9mobile Prize for Literature was created by Etisalat Nigeria in 2013, and is the first ever pan-African prize celebrating first-time African writers of published fiction books. Awarded annually, the prize aims to serve as a platform for the discovery of new creative talent out of the continent and invariably promote the burgeoning publishing industry in Africa. The winner receives a cash prize of £15,000 in addition to a fellowship at the University of East Anglia.
Kopano Matlwa is a South African writer and doctor, known for her novel Spilt Milk, which focuses on the South Africa's "Born Free" generation, and Coconut, her debut novel, which addresses issues of race, class, and colonization in modern Johannesburg. Coconut was awarded the European Union Literary Award in 2006/2007 and also won the Wole Soyinka Prize for Literature in Africa in 2010. Spilt Milk was on the longlist for the 2011 Sunday Times Fiction Prize. She is currently the Executive Director of the Zero Stunting Campaign which is a South African multi-funder initiative that aims to reduce the prevalence of stunting in South Africa by 2020.
Craig Higginson is a novelist, playwright and theatre director based in Johannesburg, South Africa. He has written and published several international plays and novels and won and been nominated for numerous awards in South Africa and Britain.
Ayọ̀bámi Adébáyọ̀ is a Nigerian writer. Her 2017 debut novel, Stay With Me, won the 9mobile Prize for Literature and the Prix Les Afriques. She was awarded The Future Awards Africa Prize for Arts and Culture in 2017.
Yewande Omotoso is a South African-based novelist, architect and designer, who was born in Barbados and grew up in Nigeria. She currently lives in Johannesburg. Her two published novels have earned her considerable attention, including winning the South African Literary Award for First-Time Published Author, being shortlisted for the South African Sunday Times Fiction Prize, the M-Net Literary Awards 2012, and the 2013 Etisalat Prize for Literature, and being longlisted for the 2017 Bailey's Women's Prize for Fiction. She is the daughter of Nigerian writer Kole Omotoso, and the sister of filmmaker Akin Omotoso.
Mohale Mashigo, born Kgomotso Carol Mashigo is a South African singer-songwriter, novelist, and former radio presenter. Her debut novel The Yearning won the 2017 University of Johannesburg Prize for South African Debut Writing and was longlisted for the International Dublin Literary Award 2018. She lives in Cape Town.
Bronwyn Law-Viljoen is a South African writer, editor, publisher and professor. She is the co-founder of the publisher Fourthwall Books and owns a bookstore called Edition. She acts as the primary editor for works on law and history of South Africa and the architecture and building process of its constitutional court structures, along with artistic book publications of the work of William Kentridge. She has also published her own novel called The Printmaker.
Pumla Dineo Gqola is a South African academic, writer, and gender activist, best known for her 2015 book Rape: A South African Nightmare, which won the 2016 Alan Paton Award. She is a professor of literature at Nelson Mandela University, where she holds the South African Research Chair in African Feminist Imaginations.
An Unusual Grief is a 2022 novel written by Yewande Omotoso and published by Cassava Republic Press. Set in Johannesburg and Cape Town, South Africa, the novel narrates the experience of Mojisola as she tries to trace the life of her daughter who has committed suicide. The review in The Guardian notes: "An Unusual Grief reveals itself as a beautiful book that offers emotional truth to its readers, and a feeling of consolation for the imperfections we are all making our peace with, all the time."
