The Word Network, also known as The Word, is a religious broadcasting network. The Word is the largest African-American religious network in the world. [1] It was founded in February 2000 by Kevin Adell who also owns WFDF, a local AM radio station, and WADL, a television station serving the Detroit television market. The network is headquartered in Southfield, Michigan. [2] The network is also available as streaming content on Apple TV, Roku, [3] Chromecast, YouTube Red, and via smartphone apps. The network is also available on cable and satellite in several countries, and on over-the-air television. [4]

History

Adell planned a national network for African-American religious ministries in the 1990s, and launched The Word Network on February 14, 2000 on DirecTV. [5]

Following its launch, broadcast was extended to all major[ which? ] television cable platforms in the United States.[ citation needed ] The network then moved to satellite broadcast[ which? ]. The network claims that it reaches viewers in 200 countries. [6]

In May 2012 the network completed a multimillion-dollar[ quantify ] expansion [7] that included new technology, production facilities with a television studio, editing suites, green rooms, conference room, a call center, and a fulfillment center. [8] Facilities were also opened on the West Coast, in Orange, California.

In January 2015 Adell purchased former Radio Disney affiliate WFDF/910 in Detroit for $3 million. [9] [10]

Current over-the-air affiliates of the network are KVVV-LD Channel 15.1 in Houston, Texas, WADL Channel 38.5 in Mount Clemens, Michigan near Detroit, WBQP-CD Chantilly 12.3 in Pensacola, Florida, and WCTU-LD Channel 46.3 in Pensacola. [11]

In 2019, the network faced boycott calls from African-American clergy after the network's white owner, Kevin Adell, shared a racially charged meme, in which Adell was depicted as a pimp surrounded by black pastors. [12] [13] [14]

In addition to its original programming, The Word Network also participates in religious conference and conventions [28] that include the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World, Inc.-P.A.W., Full Gospel Conference, Church of God in Christ Holy Convocation, and “7 Last Words” hosted by Dr. Jamal Bryant. The network also broadcasts the Gospel Music Awards, produced by Sunwise Media. [29]

The Clark Sisters are an American gospel vocal group originally consisting of five sisters: Jacky Clark Chisholm, Denise "Niecy" Clark-Bradford, Elbernita "Twinkie" Clark, Dorinda Clark-Cole, and Karen Clark Sheard. The Clark Sisters are the daughters of gospel musician and choral director Dr. Mattie Moss Clark. They are credited for helping to bring gospel music to the mainstream and are considered pioneers of contemporary gospel.

Karen Valencia Clark Sheard is an American gospel singer and songwriter. Clark-Sheard is the youngest member of gospel group the Clark Sisters, which was formed in 1973. She is also the mother of contemporary gospel singer and actress Kierra "Kiki" Sheard, with whom she frequently collaborates. She has released five solo albums and 17 with the Clark Sisters.

Elbernita "Twinkie" Dionne Clark is an American Grammy Award-winning gospel singer, songwriter, composer, record producer, musician, and evangelist. Clark is best known as the chief executive writer and member of the American gospel singing group the Clark Sisters. Often called the "Mother of Contemporary Gospel Music"; NPR named her one of the 50 Great Voices. Known for her use of the Hammond Organ, she is often referred to as the "Queen of the B3 Hammond Organ", and was inducted into the Hammond Hall of Fame in 2014. She is a BMI Gospel Trailblazer honoree, and is the recipient of multiple Grammy Awards.

It currently airs a conservative talk radio format with programming from ABC News Radio, Fox News Radio, Fox Sports Radio, and Premiere Networks. The studios and offices are on West Ten Mile Road in Southfield, Michigan.

After appearing on her mother's and aunt's albums, Sheard debuted to the music scene with the release of her debut album I Owe You in 2004. Her hit single "You Don't Know" was inspired by her mother almost losing her life in 2001 to a fatal blood clot. Sheard portrayed her mother in the hit Lifetime movie, The Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel.

Ralph James Joseph Boyd(1919–2006), also known as the Rev. Ralph J. Boyd, and as Divine King, was a black American religious leader, radio evangelist, faith healer, and pastor who founded and led Universal Liberty In Christ Truth Kingdom, Inc. from 1946 until his death in 2006.
