The Zawose Queens are band from Bagamoyo, Tanzania, comprising relatives Pendo and Leah Zawose. Their music incorporates traditional Wagogo styles and electronic production. [1] The Zawose Queens' debut album Maisha was released in 2024.

History

Pendo Zawose is the daughter of Hukwe Zawose, an internationally known musician who released three albums on Real World Records. Hukwe Zawose had seven wives and seventeen children; Pendo started performing with the family band at 14, but as a woman was not permitted to sing lead vocals. [1] [2] After Hukwe Zawose's death in 2003, Pendo began to lead the family band The Zawose Family, and they released the album Small Things Fall from the Baobab Tree in 2007. [2] Leah Zawose is Pendo's niece and Hukwe's granddaughter. [2]

Leah and Pendo Zawose began writing music together after performing at Sauti za Busara in Zanzibar in 2019. [3] The Zawose Queens' debut album Maisha was released on 7 June 2024 on Real World Records. [4] The four-piece Wamwiduka Band from northern Tanzania feature on the album. [3]

Hukwe Ubi Zawose was a prominent Tanzanian musician. He was a member of the Gogo ethnic group and played the ilimba, a large lamellophone similar to the mbira, as well as several other traditional instruments. He was also a highly regarded singer.

Amazones Power is the second studio album by West-African female musical collective Les Amazones d'Afrique. It was released through Real World Records on January 28, 2020, almost three years after their debut album, République Amazone (2017). The album was recorded between May 2018 and April 2019 in Mali, France and Spain, and similar to the debut album, was produced by Irish-Parisian musician Liam Farrell The album marks a change in the line-up of the collective since the debut album, with only original members Mamani Keïta and Rokia Koné returning, but joined by a number of new singers from the continent of Africa as well as the African diaspora. The album establishes a core membership of four singers, who also form the line-up for the band's live shows: Mamani Keïta (Mali), Fafa Ruffino (Benin), Niariu (France/Guinea), and Kandy Guira. Other vocalists on the album are Rokia Koné, Ami Yerewolo, Nacera Ouali Mesbah, Amadou Dembélé, Boy-Fall and Jon Grace. The albums compile music in the genre of Azerbaijani gitara, which was first developed in the 1960s as Azerbaijani musicians like Rafiq Hüseynov fused traditional genres such as mugham with western styles on Czech Jolana guitars. Angola Soundtrack is a two-volume compilation album series released by German record label Analog Africa. The albums compile music recorded between 1968 and 1978 in Angola, a period bridging the second half of the Angolan War of Independence and the beginnings of the Angolan Civil War, and which roughly coincides with the "golden age" of Angolan music. The first volume (2010) is focused on Angolan popular music of the 1960s and 70s, which drew from traditional styles including rebita, kazukuta, and semba, as well as Latin and Congolese influences. The second volume (2013) compiles more experimental music from the same period.
