Thein Thein Htay is a doctor and former deputy minister of health of the government of Myanmar. [1] [2]

Early life

Htay received her medical degree from the University of Medicine 2, Yangon in 1977. [3] She did a master's degree in Public Health in 1987 from the University of Medicine 1, Yangon. [3]

Career

Htay was one of the founders of Family planning in Myanmar. [3]

From 1999 to 2004, Htay worked at the headquarters of the World Health Organization. [3] She is a board member of International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh. [3]

The University of Dental Medicine, Yangon, is the leading university of dental medicine, located in Yangon, Myanmar. The university, along with the University of Dental Medicine, Mandalay, is only one of two universities of dental medicine in the country. The annual intake into both dental universities is 300 but from 2017 it introduced the new intake and decrease to only 100 per university per year. The country with a population of over 50 million had only about 1500 dentists in 2005.

The Defense Services Medical Academy (DSMA) (Burmese: တပ်မတော် ဆေး တက္ကသိုလ်, pronounced [taʔmədɔ̀ sʰé tɛʔkəθò]), located in Mingaladon, Yangon, is the University of Medicine of the Myanmar Armed Forces. One of the most selective universities in the country, the academy offers M.B., B.S. (equivalent of the M.D.) degree programs. Upon graduation, most DSMA cadets are commissioned with the rank of Lieutenant in the Myanmar Army Medical Corps. The military physicians are to serve the healthcare needs of rural people when they are assigned in the country's remote regions where access to healthcare is poor.

The Union Solidarity and Development Party is an ultranationalist, pro-military political party in Myanmar. Alongside the National League for Democracy, it is one of Myanmar's two principal national parties. USDP is the successor to the former ruling military junta's mass organisation, the Union Solidarity and Development Association, and serves as the electoral proxy of the Tatmadaw (military), which operates as a state within a state. Many of its political candidates and leadership are retired generals. It supports authoritarian military leadership. USDP was founded by Prime Minister Thein Sein to contest the 2010 Myanmar general election and headed by him until 2013. Since 2022 it has been led by Khin Yi, who was installed as a loyalist of military leader Min Aung Hlaing.

The Union Democratic Party is a Burmese political party founded in 2008. It was formally registered in May 2010, with headquarters in Bahan Township, Yangon. UDP is contesting the 2010 general election in Burma. UDP's chairman is Thein Htay, after Phyo Min Thein resigned, citing concerns over the election's fairness. The Union Democratic Party is a merger of the Public Democracy Party, founded by Phyo Min Thein, and the Union Democracy Alliance Organisation, founded by Shan political leader Shwe Ohn.

Phyo Min Thein is a Burmese politician and former political prisoner who is currently serving as Chief Minister of Yangon Region and Yangon Region Parliament MP for Hlegu Township Constituency No. 2. Prior to this, he was the chairman of Union Democratic Party and founder of the People Democracy Party which was later merged with Union Democratic Party.

Hla Yee Yee is a Burmese physiologist and Honorary Professor of Medical Education at the Defence Services Medical Academy in Yangon. She formerly was Professor of Physiology at the International Medical University in Kuala Lumpur from 1999 to 2015, and Director of the IMU Medical Education and Research Unit, renamed the Centre for Medical Education during her tenure. She taught at the University of Medicine 1, Yangon from 1969 to 1995. Hla Yee Yee is also noted as a writer and poet.

Thiri Pyanchi Min Sein was a Burmese physician, educator and administrator. The first Burmese dean of the Faculty of Medicine of Rangoon University in British Burma, Min Sein was one of the small group of senior physicians that rebuilt and expanded the country's medical education system from the ground up after the country's independence in 1948. He served as the dean of the medical school four times between 1947 and 1959, and led the Burma Medical Research Institute, the Burma Medical Association and the Burma Olympic Committee.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Naga Thein Hlaing</span> Burmese surgeon (1933–2021)

Thein Hlaing, known honorifically as Naga Thein Hlaing, was a Burmese surgeon. He was well known for his performance of endocrine surgery in the Naga Hills of northwestern Burma, using local anesthetic only. Since he was able to cure goitre, which local shamans could not do, Thein Hlaing was recognized by the local residents as Naga Nat and was worshiped as a deity.
