Thennamadevi or thennaven ma devi is a village in Tamil Nadu, India, not far from Viluppuram. [1] In 2016, a group of teenaged women "took over" the village and enacted several civic improvements within two years. [1]

The village is located among rice paddies, banana trees and sugar cane fields. [1] There is a high level of alcoholism among men in this village, and it's been reported that most of the 150 men in the village engage in heavy drinking every day. [2] The village has an extremely high percentage of widows and also high rates of human trafficking. [3] [4]

Young girls' club

After a women's empowerment club called the "young girls' club" opened in Thennamadevi, approximately two dozen teenaged women decided to enact major changes in their village. [2] Between 2016 and 2018, the group focused on making it safer for young people in the village to attend school. They installed street lights in the village's two unpaved streets, added a 150-book library and got local authorities to add a bus stop that goes into town. [1] They convinced health officials to provide modern feminine sanitary products in the nearest clinic. [1] They also started a campaign to install toilets in individual homes, to both prevent men from harassing women in the town's public toilet, and to address the health challenges associated with large public communal bathrooms. [1] Club members have pledged to help girls who are married against their will before they are 18 (which is illegal in India, but not well enforced), and in meetings they teach each other about self-discipline, personal hygiene and menstrual issues. Aranjanam / Araijan Kodi is a girdle-like ornament for the waist, worn around the waist by many south Indian adults and children. It is usually made of gold or silver, sometimes it may also be a red or black thread tied around the waist. Aranjanam are common among women and men in India south India. A traditional practice being followed even today by many women and men, it is believed wearing Aranjanam is considered as protection from negative energy. In Kerala, almost all newborns irrespective of the religious affiliation get a waist chain. Although many boys generally abandon waist chains during their teenage years, but most girls continue to wear waist chains as adults. In Tamil Nadu, it is known as 'Araijan Kodi' and 'Aranjana Charadu' in Kerala, It is made of gold, silver, or thick thread in red or black and wears it under clothes and usually keeps it on all the time, even when nude. Aranjanam can also fasten the cloth on the waist, similar to women using it to secure the folds of a sari. Some parents also believe that it will safeguard against evil spirits. Although in India, many women and men continue to wear them as adults as well. A follower of Shiva is expected to wear a chain, with Rudrakshas strung in a white chain with one hundred beads, around the waist. In Lakshadweep a silver thread is worn by both men and women.

The village is connected to nearby places through SH-134. The nearest railway station is Tindivanam which is 5 km from the village. Puducherry is 32.8 km from Endiyur. The village has a Draupadi Amman temple.

Organ donation in India is regulated by the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act, 1994. The law allows both deceased and living donors to donate their organs. It also identifies brain death as a form of death.
