Rayagada district got the status of a separate district with effect from 2 October 1992. The population of this district consists mainly of tribals. The Kondhas or Kondhs form the majority of population followed by Souras. Apart from Odia, several adivasi languages like Kui, Kondha, Soura are spoken by the indigenous population of the district.

Therubali is located at 19°20′N83°26′E / 19.33°N 83.43°E / 19.33; 83.43 . [1] It has an average elevation of 248 metres (813 feet). It is located 21 km towards north of District headquarters Rayagada and 319 km from the state capital Bhubaneswar.
