This is a Picture of Wind is an electronic literature project created by UK-based artist, writer, performer, and researcher J.R. Carpenter. [1] This is a multimodal project, consisting of a web app, a zine, and a print poetry collection. The project, written in the form of HTML5, CSS, PHP and JavaScript, is a collection of short-written poems that explores the innovative use of multimedia elements and the intersection between literature and technology. J.R. Carpenter first published this work on her digital platform in 2018 with a print book published in 2020. The work has since gained recognition in the field of electronic literature.
This is a Picture of Wind is Carpenter's response to the 2013-14 United Kingdom winter floods that ravaged the South West of England. These floodings left a trail of destruction in Somerset, Devon, Dorset, and Cornwall with severe damage to local infrastructure.
Describing this work as "a weather poem for phones", Carpenter transforms weather reports into poetic stanzas with interchangeable vocabulary, a constantly reworking collection of anecdotes that change at specific intervals to depict wind conditions throughout the calendar year. The purpose is to alter and reshape the conception of natural phenomena.
This is a Picture of Wind features descriptions of weather from diary entries intertwined with live reports of weather data of the area. [2] J.R. Carpenter invites readers into the role of authorship within a world defined by elusive natural forces. Carpenter combines the processes of presentation and interpretation by utilizing a web-based medium to decipher the vast uncertainty and interchangeability of nature. The poetic nature of This is a Picture of Wind places the author's creative role in the background, allowing the intricate interplay of phenomenal reports, shifting anecdotes, and the complex process of reader interpretation to take center stage. The author challenges readers to reconfigure their perception of nature, emphasizing that it is neither predictable nor anthropocentric, but rather a recalcitrant force responding to Anthropocene production. [3] Her expertise lies in replicating the variable forces of the wind and transforming them into a calendar-based weather report, which functions as seamlessly as a casual conversation. [4]
The calendar design in This is a Picture of Wind incorporates a horizontal scrolling structure with poetic stanzas that observe wind conditions and the surrounding environment each week of the 12 months. The dynamic blue text mirrors the ever-changing and turbulent nature of the wind. Every digital component within this artwork, including the coding, color palette, and stanza structure, meticulously mirrors the wind's distinctive attributes. While the narrative occurs in 2014, the work's thematic relevance transcends temporal boundaries. The real-time weather updates imbue readers with a profound sense of immediacy.
The IOTA Institute, with generous sponsorship from the Canada Council for the Arts, introduced This is a Picture of Wind as one of the commissioned web-based projects in 2017. The web-based app was within the framework of IOTA:DATA along the production of a digital research publication investigating the domains of web-based art communities, digital aesthetics, and the multifaceted histories of Net Art. A print book iteration was published by Longbarrow Press in Sheffield in June 2020. The Digital Storytelling exhibit at the British Library in London showcased the project from June to October 2023.
Carpenter designed the project for mobile users, but it also works on computers and tablets. This is a Picture of Wind is an example of generative literature that explores the interplay between quantitative weather reports, traced maps, and the poetic relationships between human and nonhuman authorship. The printed version provides a distinct version from its web-based original, as it transforms into half a weather diary, and half a guidebook detailing the unpredictable natural disaster. The book offers a diverse vocabulary to depict the transmutable characteristics of nonhuman phenomena. [7]
This is a Picture of Wind has received recognition as the winner of the Dot Award for Digital Literature and the People's Choice Award in the Opening Up Digital Fiction Competition in 2018. The work was also shortlisted for the Robert Coover Award for a Work of Electronic Literature [8] and the New Media Writing Prize in the same year. [9]

Kenneth Goldsmith is an American poet and critic. He is the founding editor of UbuWeb and since 2020 is the ongoing artist-in-residence at the Center for Programs in Contemporary Writing (CPCW) at the University of Pennsylvania, where he teaches. He is also a senior editor of PennSound at the University of Pennsylvania. He hosted a weekly radio show at WFMU from 1995 until June 2010. He has published 32 books including ten books of poetry, notably Fidget (2000), Soliloquy (2001), Day (2003) and his American trilogy, The Weather (2005), Traffic (2007), and Sports (2008), 'Seven American Deaths and Disasters (2011), and 'Capital: New York Capital of the Twentieth Century (2015). He also is the author of three books of essays, Uncreative Writing: Managing Language in the Digital Age (2011), Wasting Time on The Internet (2016), and Duchamp Is My Lawyer: The Polemics, Pragmatics, and Poetics of UbuWeb (2020). In 2013, he was appointed the Museum of Modern Art's first poet laureate.
Nick Montfort is a poet and professor of digital media at MIT, where he directs a lab called The Trope Tank. He also holds a part-time position at the University of Bergen where he leads a node on computational narrative systems at the Center for Digital Narrative. Among his publications are seven books of computer-generated literature and six books from the MIT Press, several of which are collaborations. His work also includes digital projects, many of them in the form of short programs. He lives in New York City.
Judy Malloy is an American poet whose works embrace the intersection of hypernarrative, magic realism, and information art. Beginning with Uncle Roger in 1986, Malloy has composed works in both new media literature and hypertext fiction. She was an early creator of online interactive and collaborative fiction on The WELL and the website ArtsWire.
Deena Larsen is a new media and hypertext fiction author involved in the creative electronic writing community since the 1980s. Her work has been published in online journals such as the Iowa Review Web, Cauldron and Net, frAme, inFLECT, and Blue Moon Review. Since May 2007, the Deena Larsen Collection of early electronic literature has been housed at the Maryland Institute for Technology in the Humanities.
Stephanie Strickland is a poet living in New York City. She has published ten volumes of print poetry and co-authored twelve digital poems. Her files and papers are being collected by the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book And Manuscript Library at Duke University.
James Christopher O'Sullivan is an Irish writer, publisher, editor, and academic from Cork city. He is a university lecturer, the founding editor of Blackwater Publishing and the now defunct New Binary Press, and the writer of several academics and creative books.
Poet Loss Pequeño Glazier is the creator of books of print poetry, digital poems, theoretical texts, and performance works. Glazier stands among literary figures at the "forefront of the digital poetics movement. A "distinguished writer of electronic poetry as well as a critic", according to N. Katherine Hayles, he is author of Luna Lunera, Anatman, Pumpkin Seed, Algorithm, Digital Poetics: the Making of E-Poetries, the first book-length study of digital poetry, and Small Press, as well as the major digital works, white faced bromeliads on 20 hectares, Io Sono at Swoons, and Territorio Libre (2003-2010). These three works are featured in his digital poetry performance film, Middle Orange | Media Naranja. His projects also include numerous poems, essays, film, visual art, sound, digital works, and projects for dance, music, installations, and performance. Glazier's poetic vision was the subject of an interview by David Jhave Johnston in 2012. His recent project, Luna Lunera: Poems al-Andalus is a ten-year project culminating in a collection of print poetry drawn from scores of digital, code, and performance iterations. Luna Lunera is co-presented on the Web as digital poems, solo readings and as dance performances.
J. R. Carpenter is a British-Canadian artist, writer, and researcher working across performance, print, and digital media. She was born in Nova Scotia in 1972. She lived in Montreal from 1990 to 2009. She emigrated to England in 2010, and became a British citizen in 2019. She now lives in Southampton, England.
María Mencía is a Spanish-born media artist and researcher working as a Senior Lecturer at Kingston University in London, United Kingdom. Her artistic work is widely recognized in the field of electronic literature, and her scholarship on digital textuality has been widely published. She holds a Ph.D. in Digital Poetics and Digital Art at the Chelsea College of Arts of the University of the Arts London and studied English Philology at the Complutense University of Madrid.
New Binary Press was an independent publishing house founded in 2012 in Cork city, Ireland. In a Tweet dated 19 January 2021, the New Binary Press announced that it had ceased operations. It published print books and electronic literature, specialising in more experimental works, as well as a number of periodicals. It was established and run by its editor, James O'Sullivan.
Scott Rettberg is an American digital artist and scholar of electronic literature based in Bergen, Norway. He is the co-founder and served as the first executive director of the Electronic Literature Organization. He leads the Center for Digital Narrative, a Norwegian Centre of Research Excellence from 2023 to 2033.

David Jhave Johnston is a Canadian poet, videographer, and motion graphics artist working chiefly in digital and computational media,. and a researcher at the Center for Digital Narrative at the University of Bergen. This artist's work is often attributed, simply, to the name Jhave.
Samantha Gorman is an American game developer known for her combination of narrative, theatricality and gaming in VR environments, and for introducing gestural interactions in touchscreen narratives. She has won multiple awards for her work, both in the field of games and in electronic literature and new media writing. Gorman co-founded the computer art and games studio Tender Claws in 2014 and has been an assistant professor at Northeastern University since 2020.
ReRites is a literary work of "Human + A.I. poetry" by David Jhave Johnston that used neural network models trained to generate poetry which the author then edited. ReRites won the Robert Coover Award for a Work of Electronic Literature in 2022.
Notes on the Voyage of Owl & Girl is a generative HTML work written by J.R. Carpenter. It debuted in 2013 and was printed in 2014. The work has little to no user input to control this story. The work includes some Morse code that can be translated into a message.
