Thomas Birkmann (born 18 October 1955) is a German philologist who specializes in Germanic studies.

Biography

Thomas Birkmann was born un Düsseldorf on 18 October 1955. He received his Ph.D. in Germanic philology at the University of Freiburg in 1986, and habilitated at the University of Freiburg in 1933 with a thesis on runes. Since 2000, Birkmann has been an associate professor of Germanic philology at the University of Freiburg.

Thorsberg moor

The Thorsberg moor near Süderbrarup in Anglia, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, is a peat bog in which the Angles deposited votive offerings for approximately four centuries. It is the location of important Roman Iron Age finds, including early Elder Futhark runic inscriptions such as the Thorsberg chape, a Roman helmet, a shield buckle, and an early example of socks. The finds are of similar importance as the contemporaneous finds from Illerup and Vimose in Denmark.

Elmer H. Antonsen German philologist

Elmer H. Antonsen was an American philologist who specialized in Germanic studies. Antonsen was born in Glens Falls, New York on 17 November 1929. He was Professor of German Studies, Germanic Philology and Germanic Linguistics at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. He was visiting professor at the University of Göttingen. He retired in 1996, and was awarded professor emeritus status. He was a known expert on runology. Antonsen died in Urbana, Illinois on 25 August 2008.
