Thomas Edward Seymour (born January 20, 1977, in New Britain, Connecticut) is an American filmmaker and actor.

Tom Seymour is considered one of the "Top Twenty Contemporary Underground Filmmakers in the U.S.", according to the book The History of Independent Cinema , [1] [ dead link ] He is most known for the award-winning and New York Times celebrated documentaries VHS Massacre,VHS Massacre Too, and MacLeod, distributed by FilmRise, NBC/Universal, Tubi, Peacock TV, MUBI, Shudder's Mid May Massacre and Troma Entertainment (2016–2021). The documentaries feature Joe Bob Briggs, James Rolfe, Greg Sestero, Debbie Rochon, Lloyd Kaufman, Juliette Danielle and Kevin MacLeod. They concentrate on the video store era and how media consolidation has destroyed the American exploitation film industry.

Career

Seymour directed the York Entertainment DVD release Land of College Prophets and Everything Moves Alone , which had a New York theatrical run in 2001.

He is known for the Emmy-nominated and YouTube Award-nominated series net_work (2007–2009), featured on Hulu. [2]

In 2009, London Betty made the list of "Top Films of the Year" on Moviesmademe.com in 2009, and in May 2011 it hit the #3 spot for British comedy on Amazon on Demand.

In 2010, at Hale Manor Productions, he starred in and directed such films as London Betty (released on Maverick Entertainment's Platinum label in 2010), starring Daniel Von Bargen from Seinfeld and Malcolm in the Middle and narrated by Clint Howard.

In 2012, Jon Gorman of Bloodbath Pictures and Seymour directed the feature film Rudyard Kipling's Mark of the Beast starring Ellen Muth (Dead Like Me Showtime series). It was given a positive review by Ain't it Cool News and was featured in Issue #318 of Fangoria Magazine in the article "Bugged out on Beast".

In 2014, Seymour won the Platinum Remi (World-fest Houston's Highest honor) for his feature film Rudyard Kipling's Mark of the Beast.[ citation needed ]

VHS Massacre was screened at Yale University in May 2016 as part of the NH docs Film Festival. It was called "A Fantastic Documentary" by Ain't it Cool News. [3]

He is known for his work on the 2018 National Board of Review-nominated (through Hunter College) Toy Shop

In October 2021, Seymour joined the 26th annual Webby Awards to judge, becoming an Associate Member of the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences.

In July 2023 The New York Times referred to VHS Massacre Too and VHS Massacre as "informative and enlightening, with copious commentary from the people who make these movies, and those who love them." - Jason Bailey.

August 13th of 2024 Tom's latest documentary feature American Expendables: The Films of North American Pictures was released through MVD Entertainment on Fandango, Prime and Tubi. The film celebrates the unsung action stars of the eighties/nineties in the North American Pictures Catalog. From Cynthia Rothrock and Bolo Yeung, to Billy Blanks, it examines the home video martial arts craze in the U.S. at the time.

Seymour has directed video content for CBS, NBC, IGN, Troma, college and Black20 Studios over the course of his career. He is the creator of the popular internet web series Black20: Trailer Park (seen on G4 TV, IGN, YouTube). Black20.com boasts 150,000,000 unique views of their video content and features talent including Aubrey Plaza, Amy Schumer, and Eric Andre. In 2008 Seymour and the rest of the Black20 comedy troop were voted the first "The Kings of Dot Comedy" by Attack of the Show on G4TV.

Some of his acting performances include A New Wave (starring John Krasinski), Being Michael Madsen (starring Michael Madsen, Virginia Madsen and David Carradine), the Emmy-nominated Hulu series net_Work as the character "Tom: The Coolest Guy in The Office" and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno in the "Easter Bunny Hates You" digital video.

He has over forty film festival wins in his career to date, including at San Francisco IndieFest, Cannes World, Chicago Horror, Vancouver Horror Show, Miami Sci-Fi, Requiem FearFest, and the Telly Awards. His films have been covered by media including Variety, NPR, and the New York Times.

<i>Meerkat Manor</i> British television series about a meerkat family

Meerkat Manor is a British television documentary produced by Oxford Scientific Films that premiered in September 2005. Originally broadcast on Animal Planet International for four seasons, until its cancellation in August 2008, the programme had a revival in 2021 with the programme now known as Meerkat Manor: Rise of the Dynasty in some countries. Using traditional animal documentary style footage along with narration, the series told the story of the Whiskers, one of more than a dozen families of meerkats in the Kalahari Desert being studied as part of the Kalahari Meerkat Project, a long-term field study into the ecological causes and evolutionary consequences of the cooperative nature of meerkats. The original programme was narrated by Bill Nighy, with the narration redubbed by Mike Goldman for the Australian airings and Sean Astin for the American broadcasts. Land of College Prophets is a 2005 independent comedy film produced by Thomas Edward Seymour, Mike Aransky and Phil Guerette. Originally distributed on Netflix in 2005, Prophets was one of the first of the "backyard superhero" subgenres of films, pre-dating James Gunn's Super, Defendor, Special, Kick Ass and so on. The film involves low-level superheroes at a community college that awaken a haunted wishing well. The film mixes comedy with science fiction in a tale of two brawling college students who accidentally reactivate a dormant well that spews toxic liquids into the surrounding community, resulting in abrupt and deadly changes within nature and people. The film was available on Netflix, Hollywood Video and Movie Gallery in 2005.

London Betty made the list of "Top Films of the Year" on Moviesmademe.com in 2009. Originally having a theatrical release in 2009, the film was released on DVD in 2010 through Maverick Entertainment on their Platinum Label. In May 2011 London Betty hit the #3 spot for British comedy on Amazon on Demand. The film was nationally distributed at Blockbuster Video until the company went out of business in 2013. Director Tom Seymour affectionately referred to this film and his two other features as the "Backyard Trilogy" consisting of Everything Moves Alone, Land of College Prophets and London Betty. The three films all involve backyard thieves or in the case of Land of College Prophets superheroes that all dwell in suburban environments all shot within central Connecticut.
