History
The academy selects the Nominees and Winners for the Webby Awards and the Lovie Awards, which have been described as the leading honors for websites and individual achievement in technology and creativity. The Webby Awards have been described as the "Oscars of the Internet" in the media, and popular television series such as the Masterpiece has won the Webby Awards in 2017. [3] [4] In 2021, the academy also introduced the Anthem Awards to honor the purpose and mission-driven work of people, companies and organizations worldwide. [5]
According to the IADAS website, their purpose is:
- To recognize and acknowledge excellence in interactive content across emerging technologies [6]
- To connect a diverse group of luminaries to facilitate growth and development in the digital arts and sciences [6]
- To educate industry professionals and the public-at-large about what is relevant, making technology accessible and integrating it into the general culture [6]
In 2011, IADAS pinpointed five challenges the internet would face in the following five years in response to the exponential growth of the internet and its users. An article in Huffington Post described IADAS's perspective on the five challenges stating that the organization believed that the next five years had to see improvements in privacy protection, copyright law, net neutrality, the open web and Internet security." [7]
Members
Membership in the academy is by invitation only. [8] IADAS describes its members as "Leading industry experts, evangelists, and visionaries working to advance the electronic medium" [9] and divides its members into four types - Associate, Executive, Europe, and Anthem.
Executive members include Richard Branson, Vint Cerf, Arianna Huffington, Julia Child, Luvvie Ajayi, among many others.
Associate members include Sara Ackerman, Matthew Ball, Brian Edelman, Andrew Jackson, James Naleski, Mirko Pallera, among many others.
Webby Awards
Established in 1996 during the Web's infancy, The Webbys is presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences (IADAS)—a 2000+ member judging body. [10] In 2006, The Webby Awards was described as the "Internet's Highest Honor" by the New York Times [11] following the 10th annual Webby Awards that was hosted in the heart of New York's Financial District. This popular occasion had attendance from the executive director of UNICEF - Ann Veneman, Pop legend Prince among others. [11]
Since then, the Webby awards have been honoring excellence on the internet in 8 major media types: Websites and Mobile Sites, Video, Advertising, Media & PR, Social, Apps, dApps & Software, Games, Podcasts, and Metaverse, Immersive & Virtual. [10]
The Webby Awards presents two honors in every category—The Webby Award and The Webby People's Voice Award. Members of the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences (IADAS) select the Nominees for both awards in each category, as well as the Winners of The Webby Awards. In the spirit of the open Web, The Webby People's Voice is awarded by the voting public. Each year, The Webby People's Voice Awards garners millions of votes from all over the world. In April 2022, NASA won 3 Webby Awards, 5 People's Voice Awards with the awards being NASA's 24th, 25th, and 26th Webby Awards since 1998. [12]
Lovie Awards
In 2010, The Webby Awards launched its European sister award program, The Lovie Awards. The Lovie Awards recognizes the unique and resonant nature of the European Internet community – from Europe's top web and creative networks and content publishers to cultural and political organizations and individual creators. The Lovie Awards is the European counterpart to the Webby's, which honor contributions and contributors to the internet and digital media. The jury accepts work in many languages, including English, French, Spanish, Italian and German [13]
The Lovie award winners get press coverage from leading media such as the Huffington Post, BBC, The Sunday Times among many others. [14] The 2022 winner list included social media fame Khaby Lame and Jaap Haartsen among others. [15]
Anthem Awards
In 2021, The Webby Awards launched the brand new Anthem Awards to celebrate purpose & mission-driven work from people, companies and organizations worldwide, across seven core purposes: Diversity, Equity & Inclusion; Education, Art & Culture; Health; Human & Civil Rights; Humanitarian Action & Services; Responsible Technology; and Sustainability, Environment & Climate. The Inaugural Anthem Awards presented Special Achievement Awards to a group of individuals who have dedicated their lives, platform or work to bring attention to some of the most important issues of our time. This list included members such as Jane Goodall, professional tennis player Naomi Osaka, comedian and filmmaker Adam McKay and American Soccer player Megan Rapinoe. [5]

Tiffany Shlain is an American filmmaker, artist, and author. Described by the public radio program On Being as "an internet pioneer", Shlain is the co-founder of the Webby Awards and the founder of the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences.
Martin Percy is a director of interactive video. He has won a BAFTA British Academy Award, five Webby Awards and a Grand Clio;. He has also received three Emmy nominations, ten Webby nominations and fourteen Webby honorees.. He has created interactive video pieces for the Tate Gallery, Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, British Film Institute and National Theatre, working with people including Ian McKellen, Derek Jacobi, Gordon Ramsay, Julie Walters, Tracey Emin, Jonathan Ross and Malcolm McDowell. His interactive video pieces are integral to Tate Tracks, a marketing campaign for the Tate Gallery which won a Gold Lion at the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival. His work is discussed in an interview with Betsy Isaacson for The Huffington Post. In 2014 he gave a TEDx talk about his interactive film Lifesaver.
The 1997 Webby Awards were the first of the annual Webby Awards, and also the first-ever nationally televised awards ceremony devoted to the Internet. 700 people attended the event on March 6, 1997, at Bimbo's Night Club in San Francisco, California.
The 1998 Webby Awards were held on March 6, 1998, at the San Francisco Palace of Fine Arts, and were the first event ever to be broadcast live via the Web in 3D. The "People's Voice" awards, chosen by online poll, received 100,000 cumulative votes that year.
The 12th annual 2008 Webby Awards were held on June 10, 2008 and emceed by SNL head writer Seth Meyers and help at Cipriani, a massive banquet hall in Manhattan's financial district. The Webby Film and Video Awards were held on June 9 at Skirball Center for the Performing Arts and were hosted by Judah Friedlander. The awards were judged by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, and winners were selected from over 10,000 entries. Lorne Michaels was honored with a lifetime achievement award.

NASA TV is also available via various cable, satellite, and over-the-top media services worldwide. The network was formally created in the early 1980s to provide NASA managers and engineers with real-time video of missions. NASA has operated a television service since the beginning of the space program for archival purposes, and to provide media outlets with video footage.
The 6th Annual Webby Awards was held on June 21, 2002, at San Francisco's Legion of Honor auditorium. It was presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences and was hosted by Tiffany Shlain, the Webby Awards' founder, and Maya Draisin. Coming on the heels of the dot-com bubble, a 2002 Internet bubble forced cutbacks in the event budget for this ceremony as well.

The 13th annual 2009 Webby Awards were held in New York City on June 8, 2009. They were hosted by SNL head writer Seth Meyers, and the lifetime achievement award was given to Jimmy Fallon. The awards were judged by the 650-person International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, and winners were selected from among nearly 10,000 entries from 60 countries and all 50 United States. Voting by the public was available prior to April 30, and over 500,000 votes were cast. The awards ceremony was made available for viewers via the official Webby YouTube channel.
The 14th annual 2010 Webby Awards were held in New York City on June 14, 2010. They were hosted by comedian B. J. Novak, and the lifetime achievement award was given to Vinton Cerf. The awards were judged by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences.
The 19th annual Webby Awards for 2015 was held at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City on May 19, 2015, which was hosted by comedian and actor Hannibal Buress. The awards ceremony was streamed live at the Webby Awards webpage. Judges from the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences picked the over one hundred winners, which may or may not match the people's choice.
