Knockin' on Heaven's Door won the Gran Angular Award for Best Film at the 1997 Sitges - Catalan International Film Festival, and the Audience Award and Grand Prize at the 1998 Valenciennes International Festival of Action and Adventure Films. It was entered into the 20th Moscow International Film Festival where Til Schweiger won the Silver St. George for Best Actor.

The project was initially intended to be a remake of the 1997 German film Knockin' on Heaven's Door, but director Im changed many things and wrote his own script, leaving Knockin' on Heaven's Door to be considered inspiration rather than a remake.
