Summary

The book covers the sexuality of three women: Lina, a suburban Indiana mother whose teenage rape disrupts the course of her life; Maggie, a seventeen-year-old high school student in North Dakota who becomes entangled in an illegal affair with her married English teacher; and Sloane, a successful restaurant owner in the Northeast whose husband watches her have sex with other men and women at her request. Taddeo spent eight years writing the book, driving across the country six times to embed herself in the lives of the three women. [2]

Three Women debuted at number one on The New York Times Combined Print & E-Book Nonfiction best-sellers list on July 28, 2019. [3] It spent eleven weeks on the list. [4]

Television series

In July 2019, Showtime gave a series commitment to a television adaptation of the book. [7] In July 2021, the project gave production a series order with Shailene Woodley starring and Taddeo as executive producer. [8] In February 2023, the series was moved to Starz. [9]

Reception

At the review aggregator website Book Marks, which assigns individual ratings to book reviews from mainstream literary critics, the book received a cumulative "Positive" rating based on 29 reviews: 12 "Rave" reviews, 6 "Positive" reviews, 9 "Mixed" reviews, and 2 "Pan" reviews. [10]

In June 2020 it won the narrative non-fiction book of the year at the British Book Awards. [11]

Three Women is an American television series based on the 2019 book of the same name by Lisa Taddeo that was initially set to premiere on Showtime. On January 30, 2023, Deadline reported that Showtime had decided not to air the completed series. Starz picked up the series a week later. All 10 episodes of season one premiered on February 16, 2024, in Australia on Stan. After 15 months without news, Starz announced that the show is set to premiere September 13, 2024 with a weekly release.
