Tico is a social robot developed by Adele Robots to interact with humans in different environments, primarily promotional events and in education as a helper for teachers.

A social robot is an autonomous robot that interacts and communicates with humans or other autonomous physical agents by following social behaviors and rules attached to its role. Like other robots, a social robot is physically embodied. Some synthetic social agents are designed with a screen to represent the head or 'face' to dynamically communicate with users. In these cases, the status as a social robot depends on the form of the 'body' of the social agent; if the body has and uses some physical motors and sensor abilities, then the system could be considered a robot.

History

Initially created by Treelogic in 2007 as a research platform for Human-Robot Interaction, it participated in several R&D projects such as ACROSS, [1] and was also tested in supermarkets and schools. It became commercially available in 2010.

ACROSS is a Singular Strategic R&D Project led by Treelogic funded by the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade activities in the field of Robotics and Cognitive Computing over an execution time-frame from 2009 to 2011. ACROSS project involves a number higher than 100 researchers from 13 Spanish entities.

Design

The first version included a laser rangefinder and ultrasonic sensors for obstacle detection, and a camera for tracking people and reading QR codes.[ clarification needed ] It also has a touch screen. Its head and neck access 6 degrees of freedom. It moves using differential steering with two high-torque EC gear-motors, and runs Ubuntu 9.10 on a 1.6Ghz Intel Core Duo. It stands 1.5 metres (4 ft 11 in) tall and weighs 85 kilograms (187 lb). A new, fresh battery allows it to run freely for eight hours.
