Tiger Tara (foaled 23 October 2010) is a New Zealand bred Standardbred racehorse that raced at the very top level in both New Zealand and Australia.

He is notable in that he was voted Australian Harness Horse of the Year for the 2019 season and he won seven Group 1 races, including the Inter Dominion Pacing Championship which is raced between the best horses in Australasia.

Racing career

Tiger Tara was originally trained in Canterbury, New Zealand, by Geoff Dunn and driven in all his wins during that time by Gerard O'Reilly. [1] He was later sold and exported to Australian owners and trained by Kevin Pizzuto and driven by Todd McCarthy. [2]

Tiger Tara retired in December 2019 with a record of 112 starts for 37 wins, 40 placings and $2,375,065 in earnings. [6]

Stud career

After retiring from the track, Tiger Tara commenced stud duties at Yirribee Pacing Stud, North Wagga for an initial fee of $3,500. [7]

Foaled in 1969, he was by Young Charles out of Loyal Trick by Hal Tryax (USA). Maori's Idol was an Australian Standardbred racehorse. He was the first Australian trotter to break two minutes with a time of 1:59.3 on 19 November 1977 at Moonee Valley. Maori's Idol became one of Australia's greatest trotters, with a record 24 successive race victories before being placed third in the 1978 Melbourne Inter-Dominion Final. He is still the trotting record holder with 22 wins in a season. He was superior to his rivals. He could have gone through his career unbeaten had he been placed to advantage by his connections.

Hondo Grattan was the first horse in Australia to win (AUD)$200,000 and also the first horse to win 21 races at Harold Park Paceway. He was a winner at a time of top competition, that included horses such as Pure Steel and Paleface Adios. He was inducted into the Inter Dominion Hall of Fame.

Flashing Red is a brown Australia bred Standardbred racehorse that was foaled in 1997. He is notable in that he won both the Auckland Pacing Cup and two New Zealand Trotting Cups. The Inter Dominion is a harness racing competition that has been contested since 1936 in Australia and New Zealand.

Mr Feelgood is a high-class Standardbred racehorse. He is the only pacer in recent years to win major races in both North America and Australia.

Monkey King is a leading New Zealand Standardbred racehorse. He is most noted for winning the New Zealand Trotting Cup and New Zealand Free-For-All double in two consecutive years, in 2009 and 2010, the first time this has ever been achieved. He also won the Miracle Mile Pace and the Auckland Trotting Cup in the 2009/10 season, as well as running second in the Inter Dominion Grand Final. As a result, he achieved the highest-earning season ever by a New Zealand pacer, and was crowned New Zealand Horse of the Year.
