Tiller School is a non-profit charter school serving kindergarten through fifth grade in Beaufort, North Carolina.



Tiller School was established by a group of parents and teachers in 1993 to provide a quality, enriched education for the children of Carteret County. The original school house was on Highway 24 in the building which now houses the North Carolina Coastal Federation's headquarters.

In the spring of 1998, Tiller School applied for and was granted charter status by the North Carolina Department of Instruction. Charter School status provides the school with per child public school funding for operating expenses.


Tiller School is a tuition free, public charter school. Any child who is qualified under the laws of North Carolina for admission to a public school is qualified for admission to a charter school. To qualify to attend a NC public school, a student must be a legal resident of North Carolina. County boundaries or school attendance areas do not affect charter school enrollment. Tiller School does not limit admission to students on the basis of intellectual ability, measures of achievement or aptitude, athletic ability, disability, race, creed, gender, national origin, religion or ancestry.

If the number of applications exceeds the number of available spaces, a lottery will be held to fill vacant seats for the next school year. After seats are filled, the drawing will continue to determine the order of a waiting list.


The North Carolina Standard Course of Study [2] is used as the basis for Tiller School curriculum .

In addition, Tiller School has adopted The Core Knowledge Sequence [3] developed by E.D. Hirsch, who founded the Core Knowledge Foundation. Core Knowledge provides a clear outline of content to be learned Grade by Grade so that knowledge, language, and skills build cumulatively from year to year. This sequential building of knowledge not only helps ensure that children enter each new Grade ready to learn, it also helps prevent the repetitions and gaps that so often characterize current education.

Tiller School uses a clear social curriculum, known as Responsive Classroom [4] built around six central components that integrate teaching, learning and caring in the daily program.


In 2017 Tiller School was ranked 15th best public elementary school of 1,391 in North Carolina by Niche.com. [5]

In education, Response to Intervention is an approach to academic intervention used in the United States to provide early, systematic, and appropriately intensive assistance to children who are at risk for or already underperforming as compared to appropriate grade- or age-level standards. RTI seeks to promote academic success through universal screening, early intervention, frequent progress monitoring, and increasingly intensive research-based instruction or interventions for children who continue to have difficulty. RTI is a multileveled approach for aiding students that is adjusted and modified as needed if they are failing.

Florence Christian School is a private, Baptist Christian school located in Florence, South Carolina, US. It offers an academic program with a largely Christian-oriented curriculum. Differentiated instruction and assessment, also known as differentiated learning or, in education, simply, differentiation, is a framework or philosophy for effective teaching that involves providing all students within their diverse classroom community of learners a range of different avenues for understanding new information in terms of: acquiring content; processing, constructing, or making sense of ideas; and developing teaching materials and assessment measures so that all students within a classroom can learn effectively, regardless of differences in their ability. On the content level, teachers adapt what they are teaching to meet the needs of students. This can mean making content more challenging or simplified for students based on their levels. The process of learning can be differentiated as well. Teachers may choose to teach individually at a time, assign problems to small groups, partners or the whole group depending on the needs of the students. By differentiating product, teachers decide how students will present what they have learned. This may take the form of videos, graphic organizers, photo presentations, writing, and oral presentations. All these take place in a safe classroom environment where students feel respected and valued—effects.

Chaparral Star Academy is a public charter school in Austin, Texas. It is an open-enrollment, publicly funded charter school in Austin, Texas. The students often participate in out-of-school activities, such as national figure skating, gymnastics, and equestrian competitions. Chaparral Star Academy offers an intensive curriculum designed for students making use of a more compact daily schedule. Students may choose from a morning session or an afternoon session.
