Tod Markey Brown (born June 27, 1971) is an American baseball coach and former pitcher, currently serving as head baseball coach of the New Mexico Lobos. He played college baseball for Arizona for four seasons, helping the team to the 1992 Pac-10 Conference championship and falling just shy of the 1993 College World Series. He then served as the head coach of the North Dakota State Bison (2008–2021).

Early life, education, and pro baseball career

Born in Charleston, South Carolina, Brown grew up in Tucson, Arizona and graduated from Sabino High School in 1989. [1] [2] At the University of Arizona, Brown was a left-handed pitcher for Arizona Wildcats baseball from 1991 to 1994. Setting a school record with 35 appearances, Brown had six wins and eight saves for Arizona's 1993 College World Series runner-up team. [3] In 1993, he played collegiate summer baseball with the Harwich Mariners of the Cape Cod Baseball League. [4] [5] Brown graduated from Arizona in 1994 with a bachelor's degree in regional development. [3]

Not selected in the 1994 Major League Baseball draft, Brown played two seasons of independent league baseball after college. With the Brainerd Bears of the North Central League in 1994, Brown had 17 appearances (12 starts), a 5–2 record, and 3.15 ERA on a Bears team that won the North Central League playoffs. [6] [7] After the season, Brown later signed with the Cleveland Indians but was released during 1995 spring training due to an injury. [1]

Returning to baseball in 1996, Brown had four appearances with three starts, an 0–1 record, and 9.88 ERA for the Minot Mallards of the Prairie League. [6] In 1997, Brown completed a post-baccalaureate degree in education at Chapman University. [3]

Coaching career

Early coaching career (1997–2007)

From 1997 to 1998, Brown was an assistant coach at Sabino High School, helping Sabino win the 1997 Arizona 4A state championship. [1] Staying in Tucson, Brown returned to the University of Arizona on August 18, 1998 as volunteer assistant coach under head coach Jerry Stitt. [8]

Then from 2000 to 2007, Brown was pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Bowling Green. [3] Bowling Green won back-to-back Mid-American Conference East Division titles in 2001 and 2002. [9]

North Dakota State (2008–2021)

On July 3, 2007, North Dakota State University hired Brown as head coach of North Dakota State Bison baseball. [10] Brown inherited a program that had three straight losing seasons; the North Dakota State athletic program was also in the final year of a four-year transition from Division II to Division I. [11]

In his first five seasons, North Dakota State consistently improved its win total, reaching a program record 40 wins in 2012. [11] On February 18, 2012, North Dakota State upset no. 5 Arizona 8–2 for the first win in program history over a ranked Division I opponent. [12]

Then in 2014, despite a fifth and last place finish in conference standings, Brown led North Dakota State to two new historical firsts: the Summit League tournament title, which resulted in an automatic NCAA Division I tournament bid. [13] [14] [3] The 2021 North Dakota State baseball team reached a new program high 42 wins with the second Summit tournament title and NCAA tournament. [15]

Brown had a 341–350 record in 14 seasons at North Dakota State from 2008 to 2021. [16]

New Mexico (2022–present)

On June 17, 2021, Brown was named the head baseball coach at the University of New Mexico. [17]

On March 10, 2009 the Bison made their biggest comeback in school history with a 66–64 win over Oakland University to win the Summit League tournament championship and became the first team since Southwestern Louisiana in 1972 to advance to the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship in their first year of eligibility.

They finished the season 19–16, 9–7 in Summit League play, to finish in a tie for third place. As the No. 4 seed in the Summit League tournament, they defeated Oral Roberts, Western Illinois and Omaha to win the tournament championship. As a result, they received the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament as the No. 16 seed in the East region. There the Bison lost to overall No. 1 seed Duke.

Tyler Oakes is an American college baseball coach, head coach of the NCAA Division I Summit League's North Dakota State Bison. He was the pitching coach, recruiting coordinator and associate head coach at North Dakota State from 2014 to 2021. Prior to North Dakota State, Oakes was an assistant for South Dakota State and Minnesota.

The Bison play their home games at Newman Outdoor Field adjacent to NDSU's campus. The team was coached by Tod Brown in his 14th season at NDSU. The Bison won the Summit League tournament for the second time since entering Division 1 and first time since the 2014 season. After entering the NCAA tournament the Bison went 1-2 and were eliminated after being defeated by No. 7 overall Stanford and No. 17 overall UC Irvine. They defeated Nevada for the team's first ever NCAA Division I Tournament game win.

The 2022 North Dakota State Bison baseball team represented North Dakota State University during the 2022 NCAA Division I baseball season. The Bison played their home games at Newman Outdoor Field adjacent to NDSU's campus. The team was coached by Tyler Oakes in his 1st season as head coach at NDSU. Oakes had been associated with NDSU Baseball since December 2013. The Bison claimed their first Summit League Regular season title during the season, winning every conference series played.
The Bison entered the Summit League tournament as the No. 1 overall seed. They lost to Omaha to start the tournament, then beat South Dakota State to advance to the semifinals, before falling to Omaha yet again to be eliminated from the tournament. NDSU finished the season with a 31-19 record and a 17-5 record in the Summit League, the second of which is their best for the program since entering Division I.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2022–23 North Dakota State Bison women's basketball team</span> College womens basketball season

The 2022–23 North Dakota State Bison women's basketball team represented North Dakota State University during the 2022–23 NCAA Division I women's basketball season. The Bison, led by fourth-year head coach Jory Collins, played their home games at the Scheels Center, as members of the Summit League. After NDSU's win over St. Thomas on February 23, the Bison clinched their highest Division I win count since 2008. The Bison clinched the second seed in the Summit League tournament, the highest mark in a conference tournament since their Division II days.

The 2024 North Dakota State Bison baseball team represented North Dakota State University during the 2024 NCAA Division I baseball season. The Bison played home games at Newman Outdoor Field on NDSU's campus. The team was coached by third year head coach Tyler Oakes.
The Bison finished the season with a 20–30–1 overall record and a 14–12–1 record, which was good for third in the Summit League. NDSU made the Summit League tournament as the second seed, since regular season winner St. Thomas was ineligible, and played Oral Roberts in the first round. The Bison would fall to the Golden Eagles, defeat top-seeded Omaha in the first elimination game, but fell to Northern Colorado in extra innings in the second elimination game.
