Tolu Olukayode Odugbemi NNOM,OON (born 30 January 1945) is a Nigerian professor of Medical Microbiology,educational administrator and former vice chancellor of the University of Lagos,Nigeria. [1] [2] He was the 9th vice chancellor of the University of Lagos. [3] [4] [5]
He had his elementary education at Emmanuel Primary School,Ado-Ekiti and St Stephen's Primary school in Ekiti State . He attended Christ's School Ado Ekiti (1958–1964) for his secondary education. [6] He had his Bachelor of science (B.Sc) degree in Microbiology and MB;BS degree from the University of Lagos. [7] [8]
He obtained his Doctorate degree (Ph.D) from the University of Sheffield School of Medicine in 1978 and a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree in 1982. [9]
He is also a Fellow of the West African College of Physicians (FWACP (Lab.Med.)),Fellow National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (FMCPath) and Fellow Royal College of Pathologists (FRCPath),U.K
He started his academic career in College of Medicine,University of Lagos and rose through the ranks to be appointed Professor of Medical Microbiology and Parasitology in 1983. He was also Honorary Consultant Medical Microbiologist to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH). At various times he was Honorary Lecturer,University of Sheffield (1976–1978),Guest Researcher,U.S Centers for Disease Control (CDC) (1982–1983) and Foundation Professor and Head of Medical Microbiology,University of Ilorin (1983–1985). He also served as the Chairman of the Nigerian Association of Colleges of Medicine (1998–2000). He also served was the President and Chairman Board of the National Postgraduate Medical College,Nigeria. [10] [11] and Vice-Chancellor,Ondo State University of Science and Technology (2010–2015). Since 2019,he's a Member of Board of Trustees of the Nigerian Academy of Medicine. [12]
The University of Lagos (UNILAG) is a public research university located in Lagos,Nigeria,which was founded in 1962. UNILAG is one of the first generation universities in Nigeria and is ranked among the top universities in Africa in major education publications. The university presently has three campuses in the mainland of Lagos. Whereas two of its campuses are located at Yaba,it's college of medicine is located at Idi-Araba,Surulere. Its main campus is largely surrounded by the Lagos Lagoon and has 802 acres of land. As at 2024,the University of Lagos admits around 8,500 undergraduate students annually and enrolls over 57,000 students.
Lagos State University,popularly known as LASU,is a Lagos state government-owned university established in 1983. Its main campus is situated at Ojo,with sub-campuses at Ikeja and Epe. The university was set up "for the advancement of learning and establishment of academic excellence". The university caters to over 35,000 students. The university was established during the administration of Late Lateef Kayode Jakande. The university offers diploma,degree and post graduate programmes,including an MBA programme. LASU was ranked among the top 600 universities in the world by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings for 2020. On 23 June 2021,LASU emerged as the best young university in Nigeria having been below the age of 50 years to be added. Times Higher Education ranked the Lagos State University as the second best university in Nigeria on 2 September 2020,and was the only state university included in the rankings for 2022. The university has attracted international funding,including for the establishment of a World Bank Group Africa Centre for Excellence on Science,Technology,Engineering,and Mathematics.
Eni Njoku was a Nigerian botanist and educator. He was vice-chancellor of the University of Lagos (1962–1965) and the University of Nigeria,Nsukka (1966–1970). He served in the Nigerian House of Representatives as federal minister of Mines and Power,and was chairman of the Electricity Corporation of Nigeria. He was an emissary at OAU-sponsored peace talks.
Jacob Festus Adeniyi Ajayi,commonly known as J. F. Ade Ajayi,was a Nigerian historian and a member of the Ibadan school,a group of scholars interested in introducing African perspectives to African history and focusing on the internal historical forces that shaped African lives. Ade Ajayi favours the use of historical continuity more often than focusing on events only as powerful agents of change that can move the basic foundations of cultures and mould them into new ones. Instead,he sees many critical events in African life,sometimes as weathering episodes which still leave some parts of the core of Africans intact. He also employs a less passionate style in his works,especially in his early writings,using subtle criticism of controversial issues of the times.
Federal University Oye Ekiti is a government-owned and operated Nigerian university. The university has two campuses located in the ancient cities of Oye-Ekiti and Ikole-Ekiti respectively. The university was founded in 2011 as one of the federal universities established by the federal government of Nigeria during the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan.
