Career

From 2021, he has been Composer-in-Association with BBC Philharmonic Orchestra. [2] The post has seen premieres of Pleasure Garden, a concerto for violinist Daniel Pioro, [3] several arrangements of baroque and medieval music, [4] After Lassus with soprano Anna Dennis, [5] and Three Pieces that Disappear for orchestra, [6] amongst a number of other repeat performances.

His opera Violet, with text by playwright Alice Birch, was commissioned by Music Theatre Wales and Britten Pears Arts. At its premiere at the Aldeburgh Festival, The Telegraph described it as ‘the best new British opera in years’, [7] and The Stage said it was ‘the finest joint UK operatic debut since Martin Crimp and George Benjamin collaborated on Into the Little Hill in 2006’. [8] It has been staged in further productions by Theater Ulm [9] and by L'aurore boréale in Paris. [10] It won or was nominated for: an International Opera Award, [11] a South Bank Sky Arts Award, [12] a Critics Circle Award, [13] IVORS Composer Award [14] and a UK Theatre Award. [15]

Other pieces have been performed at the First Night of the BBC Proms (St John’s Dance for the BBC Symphony Orchestra), [16] Aldeburgh Festival (Beautiful Caged Thing for the Mahler Chamber Orchestra), [17] and Amsterdam Concertgebouw (Sonnet Machine with Netherlands Radio Philharmonic). [18]

He has been Composer-in-Residence at Musikdorf Ernen [19] and Oxford International Song Festival, [20] and was Visiting Fellow Commoner in the Creative Arts at Trinity College Cambridge between 2017 and 2019. [21]

Education

He studied at the University of Manchester with Camden Reeves and subsequently with Sir George Benjamin at King’s College London. [22]

Colin Matthews, OBE is an English composer of contemporary classical music. Noted for his large-scale orchestral compositions, Matthews is also a prolific arranger of other composer's music, including works by Berlioz, Britten, Dowland, Mahler, Purcell and Schubert. Other arrangements include orchestrations of all Debussy's 24 Préludes, both books of Debussy's Images, and two movements—Oiseaux tristes and La vallée des cloches—from Ravel's Miroirs. Having received a doctorate from University of Sussex on the works of Mahler, from 1964–1975 Matthews worked with his brother David Matthews and musicologist Deryck Cooke on completing a performance version of Mahler's Tenth Symphony.

The Festival Musikdorf Ernen is an international music and literature festival in the Swiss alpine municipality of Ernen, in the Canton of Valais. Founded by the Hungarian pianist and music professor György Sebők in 1974, it is held annually in summer between June and August.

Joseph Phibbs is an English composer of orchestral, choral and chamber music. He has also composed for theatre, both in the UK and Japan. Since 1998 he has written regularly to commissions for Festivals, for private sponsors, and for the BBC, which has broadcast premieres of his orchestral and chamber works from the Proms and elsewhere. Alice Birch is a British playwright and screenwriter. Birch has written several plays, including Revolt. She Said. Revolt Again. for which she was awarded the George Devine Award for Most Promising New Playwright, and Anatomy of a Suicide for which she won the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize. Birch was also the screenwriter for the film Lady Macbeth and has written for such television shows as Succession, Normal People, and Dead Ringers.
