Thomas Hoad AM (born 22 March 1940) is an Australian water polo coach and former player. In 1968, he was appointed to International Swimming Federation (FINA), the world governing body for swimming and was chairman of the 1998 World Swimming Championships held in Perth, Western Australia. [2] He is currently a director of the national controlling body Australian Water Polo. [3] He currently coaches juniors at Melville and at a state level in WA.

Hoad represented Australia in water polo at the Olympic Games four times, in 1960, 1964, 1968 and 1972, as well as being captain from 1964 to 1972. He was the Australian water polo coach at the 1976, 1980, 1984 and 1988 games.

Hoad coached the 'Fremantle Mariners' to three Australian National League titles out of an unprecedented nine consecutive grand final appearances. [4]

He was a University of Western Australia sports star in 1964. He was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the 1994 Australia Day Honours for "service to sport, particularly water polo". [5]

The Tom Hoad Cup is an international water polo cup named in his honour. [2] First held in 2003, it is played annually in Perth. [2]

In 2009, Hoad was inducted into the Water Polo Australia Hall of Fame. [6] In 2011, he was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame. [7] In 2021, he was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame as general member. [8]

He was also inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 2000.

Bridgette Marie Gusterson, also known as Bridgette Ireland, is an Australian water polo player, at the 1995 FINA World Cup, and from the gold medal team of the 2000 Summer Olympics. She was a captain of the team from 1997 to 2000. She is the sister of fellow Australian water polo player and Olympic teammate Danielle Woodhouse.

Deborah Kathleen Watson is an Australian former water polo player. She is one of the greatest female water polo players to ever play the game. She won gold medals at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney and the 1986 World Aquatics Championships in Madrid.

He was given the honour to carry the national flag of Yugoslavia at the opening ceremony of the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, becoming the twelfth water polo player to be a flag bearer at the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympics. The Water Polo Australia Hall of Fame, located in Sydney, is a hall of fame dedicated to honoring players, coaches and officials who have contributed greatly to the game of water polo in Australia. It was established in 2009 by Water Polo Australia, which is the national governing body in the country.
