Thomas A. Kingsbury (born 1952) [1] is an American businessman and the Chief Executive Officer of Kohl's Department Stores as of 2023, after the departure of CEO Michelle Gass who assumed the same position at Levi Strauss. He served on the Board of Directors of Kohl's since 2021. Tom was Chief Executive Officer and President of Burlington Stores, Inc. from 2008 to 2018. [2] Kingsbury was appointed Chairman of the Board of Burlington Stores, Inc. in May 2014. Prior to joining Burlington Stores, Inc., Kingsbury served as Senior Executive Vice President- Information Services, E- Commerce, Marketing and Business Development of Kohl's Corporation from August 2006 to December 2008. Prior to joining Kohl's, Kingsbury served in various management positions with The May Department Stores Company, an operator of department store chains, commencing in 1976 and as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Filene's division since February 2000. [3] In November 2024, it was announced that he would retire from Kohl's, and be replaced with Ashley Buchanan. [4]
Kohl's is an American department store retail chain, operated by Kohl's Corporation. It currently has 1,165 locations, operating stores in every U.S. state except Hawaii. The company was founded by Polish immigrant Maxwell Kohl, who opened a corner grocery store in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1927. It went on to become a successful chain in the local area, and in 1962 the company branched out by opening its first department store. British American Tobacco Company took a controlling interest in the company in 1972 while still managed by the Kohl Family, and in 1979, the corporation was sold to BATUS Inc. A group of investors purchased the company in 1986 from British American Tobacco and took it public in 1992.
Burlington, formerly known as Burlington Coat Factory, is an American national off-price department store retailer, and a division of Burlington Coat Factory Warehouse Corporation with more than 1,000 stores in 40 states and Puerto Rico, with its corporate headquarters located in Burlington Township, New Jersey. In 2007, it was acquired by Bain Capital in a transaction and in 2008, Tom Kingsbury became president and CEO. The company went public again in 2013. Burlington is the third largest off-price retailer after TJX Companies and Ross Stores.
