Burlington, formerly known as Burlington Coat Factory, is an American national off-price department store retailer, and a division of Burlington Coat Factory Warehouse Corporation with more than 1,000 stores in 40 states and Puerto Rico, with its corporate headquarters located in Burlington Township, New Jersey. In 2007, it was acquired by Bain Capital in a transaction and in 2008, Tom Kingsbury became president and CEO. The company went public again in 2013. Burlington is the third largest off-price retailer after TJX Companies and Ross Stores.
Monroe Milstein and his father, Abe, had been running a successful wholesale and retail outerwear business together since 1946. [3] In 1972, Henrietta Milstein convinced her husband Monroe to purchase a former factory outlet in Burlington, New Jersey, for $675,050, using money she had saved from her job as a librarian for most of the $75,000 down payment. [4] [5] Initially, the Milsteins sold coats and jackets in wholesale, but in order to become less dependent on the seasonal coat business, they gradually began adding clothing items and accessories, eventually expanding into linens, gift items, a baby department and shoes. [6] [7]
A second location was opened in 1975 in Copiague on Long Island, and Milstein asked his son Lazer, who was living in Israel at the time, to return home and act as the store's legal owner for the new location. Lazer agreed, on the condition that the store be closed Saturdays in observance of the Sabbath. [5] At the time, businesses faced legal action for being open on Sunday, with an exception made for religions observing a different Sabbath. [8] In 1983, with 31 locations, the company, whose name was Burlington Coat Factory Warehouse Corporation since it was bought by the family in 1972, went public. [9]
In 2006, the company was purchased by Bain Capital Partners for $2.06 billion. [4] The Milstein family held almost 30 million shares of the Burlington Coat Factory Warehouse Corporation, making approximately $1.3 billion, and Monroe Milstein was unassociated with the business following the sale, although two of his sons, Stephen and Andrew, stayed on briefly. [5] Mark Nesci, the former executive vice president and chief operating officer, was named to serve as the acting CEO. [10] A holding company called Burlington Coat Factory Holdings Inc., was formed to be the ultimate parent of the chain. [11]
Monroe Milstein was the first cousin of Paul Milstein and Seymour Milstein.
In July 2012, the company received a $40 million incentive from the New Jersey Economic Development Authority as part of the state's GrowNJ program in order to build a new headquarters in Florence, adjacent to its existing headquarters, keeping the company from moving its headquarters outside the state. On June 27, 2013, Burlington filed its S-1 registration statement with the SEC for an initial public offering. [13] In October 2013, the company's stock rose more than 40% on its first day of trading. [14] The company reported $4.35 billion in sales for the 12-month period ending August 3, 2013. [15] As of October 2013, the company operated 503 stores in 44 states and Puerto Rico under the names Burlington Coat Factory, Cohoes Fashions, Baby Depot, and MJM Designer Shoes. [16] [17]
In 2016, Burlington Stores joined the Fortune 500 for the first time. [18] Tom Kingsbury served as the CEO from 2008 to 2018. [19]
Following the bankruptcy and closure of all Bed Bath & Beyond stores in the United States, Burlington purchased the leases for more than 40 closed locations in June 2023. [20] The following year, Burlington acquired the leases of 15 locations of the Texas-based retailer Conn's after their bankruptcy and store closings. [21]
Burlington has partnered with charitable organizations for several years. Since 2002, they have partnered with the joining the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Light the Night campaign, collecting donations at the store checkout. [22] [23] With an annual fundraiser that runs from July through October, the company raised more than $3 million in 2013, bringing the total raised by the company to date to more than $19 million. In 2006, Burlington launched the Warm Coats and Warm Hearts Drive to collect coat donations for those in need. Partnering with ABC's Good Morning America and the national nonprofit Fashion Delivers, Burlington stores served as drop off spots for the donations, which were then distributed within the area by local charities. Since the program's inception, over 1.2 million coats have been collected and distributed. [25] [26]
In 2012, the company first partnered with WomenHeart: The National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease to promote women's heart health education during National Heart Health Month [27] [28] As part of this partnership, the company holds a yearly Red Dress Event, where red dresses are sold in stores, with $1 from every sale donated to WomenHeart. [29] In 2014, as part of the partnership they launched the “Heart of Style Tour”. [30] For the tour, a bus traveled to various store locations, with heart health professionals on board providing blood pressure tests and Body Mass Index (BMI) tests and education about women's heart disease. Under investigation from animal welfare organization Humane Society of the United States, Burlington Coat Factory has been accused of labeling real fur products as "faux fur". The company agreed to pull the false advertisements after an undercover investigation revealed "faux fur" as actually made from the pelts of animals killed in China. [32] Coats sold by stores such as Burlington Coat Factory have also been found to contain hair of raccoon dog. [33] [34] [35]
From 1981 until 2009, Burlington Coat Factory's logo was supplemented with the tag "Not Affiliated with Burlington Industries." [36] [37] When Burlington Coat Factory settled a trademark dispute with fabric maker Burlington Industries in 1981, Burlington Coat Factory agreed to say in advertising that the two companies were not affiliated. [38] [39] Even though Burlington Industries ceased operations in 2004 following a buyout of its remaining operations, the "not affiliated" disclaimer remained on advertising logo and company media until 2009, when the text was retired from all logos used by the company. An urban legend concerning snakes hiding in coats being sold at Burlington became widely circulated in the early 1990s. [41] A representative from the company assured customers that since distribution centers and stores were maintained at 68 °F, a snake would not be able to survive retail conditions. [42]
In the September 11, 2001, attacks, after hijacked United Airlines Flight 175 penetrated through the South Tower of The World Trade Center, part of the plane's landing gear and fuselage came out the north side of the tower and crashed through the roof and two of the floors of the Burlington Coat Factory at 45–47 Park Place, between West Broadway and Church Street, (600 feet [180 meters]) north of the former World Trade Center. The store had been the company's first location in Manhattan, opened in 1991. [43] Three floor beams of the top floor of the building were destroyed, causing major structural damage. [44] [45] [46] Nearly nine years later, the building was part of a national controversy, as efforts to build a Muslim center and mosque at the site as the "Cordoba House" sparked protest and was widely rejected. Sawgrass Mills is a shopping mall in Sunrise, Florida, owned by Simon Property Group. The Shoppes at South Hills, formerly South Hills Mall, was a shopping mall on U.S. 9, now converted into a strip mall, in the town of Poughkeepsie, New York. The 675,000 ft² plaza opened in 1974 and included two anchors, Sears and Kmart, at opposite ends of the mall. Currently, The Shoppes at South Hills are owned and operated by DLC Management Corporation.
Latham Circle Mall was an enclosed shopping mall located adjacent to the Latham Circle in Latham, New York. Built in 1957 as Latham Corners Shopping Center, the mall was renovated several times in its history, most notably in 1977 when it became a fully enclosed and temperature-controlled shopping mall.
Genesee Valley Center is an enclosed shopping mall located in Flint Township, Michigan, outside the city of Flint, Michigan, United States. Opened in 1970, the mall is 1,272,397 square feet (118,209.5 m2) of leasable area. The mall has two anchor tenants: JCPenney and Macy's. It comprises more than 120 tenants, including a food court, and an external concourse called the Outdoor Village which also features a Barnes & Noble bookstore. The mall is located on Miller Road and Linden Road, near the junction of Interstate 69 (I-69) and I-75.
Randall Park Mall was a shopping mall located in the village of North Randall, Ohio, United States. It opened on August 11, 1976 on the site of what used to be the Randall Park Race Track. After over a decade of decline, it closed on March 12, 2009. The former Dillard's store and interior of the mall were demolished in 2015 to make way for an industrial park, and the remaining anchor tenants were demolished in 2017 after they all closed down. Amazon built a new distribution center on the site in 2018.
Pecanland Mall is an enclosed shopping mall in Monroe, Louisiana, United States. The mall was named Pecanland because the land on which the mall is located was formerly a pecan farm. The mall is on Interstate 20 near U.S. Highway 165, the two major highways in the area.
Chapel Hills Mall is an enclosed shopping mall located in Colorado Springs, Colorado, United States, with 562,733 square feet (52,280 m2) of gross leasable area. The anchor stores are AMC Theatres, Dick's Sporting Goods, Dillard's, H&M, and Macy's. There are two vacant anchor stores that Burlington and Gordmans occupied before closing.
The Mall at Whitney Field is a shopping mall located off of Route 2 near the junction with Interstate 190 in Leominster, Massachusetts. The mall opened in 1967 and was renovated and renamed in 2004. The mall's anchor stores are Burlington, Gardner Outlet Furniture, and JCPenney, with one vacant anchor last occupied by Sears. The mall was previously owned by Walton Street Capital LLC of Chicago until May 2013 when Vintage Real Estate acquired the mall with plans to renovate and turnaround the struggling mall. As of January 8, 2020, the mall is now owned by Hull Property Group.
Eastland Center was an enclosed shopping mall located in the city of Harper Woods, an inner-ring suburb of Detroit, Michigan, United States. Opened in 1957, the mall had been expanded several times since. K&G Fashion Superstore and Shoppers World were the final anchor stores, with four other vacant anchors left by Sears, Target, Burlington, and Macy's.
The Great Mall of the Great Plains was a shopping mall located in Olathe, Kansas, United States. It was the largest outlet mall in the state of Kansas, and boasted over 150 stores and 10 anchors, laid out in a half-mile racetrack pattern. Amenities included indoor glow-in-the-dark miniature golf course, a food court, a Game Zone arcade, and a Dickinson Theatres movie theater with sixteen screens. Great Mall of the Great Plains was owned & managed by Glimcher Properties Trust until January 2009. The mall closed on September 18, 2015, although Burlington Coat Factory remained open. Demolition on the mall began on July 11, 2016, and was finished in January 2017. While developers announced in January 2018 that a redevelopment called Mentum would replace the old mall, this never happened. In October 2021, Olathe-based company Garmin Ltd. indicated that it acquired the property, likely to expand its company's headquarters. Burlington Coat Factory closed at the end of January 2023, leaving the mall without any businesses.
Laurel Mall was a shopping mall located on the west side of U.S. Route 1 in Laurel, Maryland. The mall opened on October 11, 1979 and connected two pre-existing structures – the freestanding Montgomery Ward on its south side and Laurel Shopping Center to the north. The mall closed permanently on May 1, 2012.
Security Square Mall is a mall in Woodlawn, Baltimore County, Maryland, a suburb of Baltimore, in the United States. The mall features over 100 stores and restaurants, as well as a food court. One section of the mall, Grand Village Plaza, previously included Korean shops and restaurants; however, most of these establishments had closed by 2010. Security Square Mall is located adjacent to the North American School of Trades. The anchor stores are Bayit Furniture, Set the Captives Free Outreach Center, Burlington, and Macy's. There is 1 vacant anchor store that was once Sears.

The mall has approximately 70 stores, two anchors Cinemark Theatres and Target), several eateries at the mall's food court including 2 restaurants: Big Woody's and Twisted Crab.
The Tri-State Mall was a shopping mall located on Delaware Route 92 in Claymont, Delaware. The mall was closed in November 2015. At 535,000 square feet (49,700 m2), it was the state's fourth-biggest mall, with approximately fifty shops. It is located just off of Interstate 95 and is less than a mile from the Pennsylvania/Delaware border. By 2017, the only anchor store left was Burlington Coat Factory with a space previously occupied by Kmart still vacant. A large percentage of shoppers are from Pennsylvania, wishing to take advantage of Delaware's tax free shopping.

Best Market was a family-owned, regional supermarket chain with 30 stores in New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey. The company was headquartered in Bethpage, New York, and had been owned by the Raitses family since the company's first store opened in Lake Ronkonkoma, New York, in 1994.
Off-price is a trading format based on discount pricing. Off-price retailers are independent of manufacturers and buy large volumes of branded goods directly from them. The off-price retail model relies on the purchase of over-produced, or excess, branded goods at a lower price, thus being able to sell to consumers at a discount compared to other stores which purchased an initial run. Among the largest retailers of this type are TJX Companies and Ross Stores. The model is more common in countries that import fashion-oriented or household goods, as the discount role in producer countries is usually filled by factory outlets or small-scale open-air marketplaces.
