On July 1, 2015, BWX Technologies Inc. began trading separately from its former subsidiary Babcock & Wilcox Enterprises Inc. after a spinoff. [2] Sandy Baker became CEO and Fees became chairman. [3] The company had 2,500 employees in Lynchburg and 4,500 in total. [4]
After Babcock & Wilcox emerged from bankruptcy in 2006, that company and BWX Technologies (both subsidiaries of McDermott International, Inc.) consolidated operations as The Babcock & Wilcox Companies [5] headed by President John Fees.[ citation needed ]

BWXT announced in 2009 plans to design, develop, license and deploy a small modular nuclear reactor (SMR) called the BWXT mPower reactor. The passively safe reactor would have had an output of 180 megawatts (electric) and was one of several SMRs investigated by U.S. engineering firms. The mPower reactor featured a fully underground containment structure.
BWXT mPower, Inc. was formed in 2012 to design, develop, license, and deploy the B&W mPower reactor, a small modular nuclear reactor. The BWXT mPower reactor – no longer in development as of 2017 [6] – was a scalable, modular reactor with the capacity to provide output in increments of 180 MWe for a four-year operating cycle without refueling. A nuclear microreactor is a plug-and-play type of nuclear reactor which can be easily assembled and transported by road, rail or air. Microreactors are 100 to 1,000 times smaller than conventional nuclear reactors, and range in capacity from 1 to 20 megawatts, compared to 20 to 300 megawatts for small modular reactors (SMRs). Due to their size, they can be deployed to locations such as isolated military bases or communities affected by natural disasters. It can operate as part of the grid, independent of the grid, or as part of a small grid for electricity generation and heat treatment. They are designed to provide resilient, non-carbon emitting, and independent power in challenging environments. The nuclear fuel source for the majority of the designs is "High-Assay Low-Enriched Uranium", or HALEU.
The Demonstration Rocket for Agile Cislunar Operations (DRACO) is an under-development spacecraft by Lockheed Martin in partnership with BWX Technologies as part of a DARPA program to be demonstrated in space in 2027. The experimental vehicle is planned to be reusable and will utilize next-generation nuclear thermal propulsion technology and low-enriched uranium, with the U.S. Space Force to provide the launch. In 2023, NASA joined the DARPA program in developing the nuclear thermal rocket (NTR) to carry astronaut crews to deep-space destinations like Mars. DRACO will be the world's first in-orbit demonstration of a NTR engine. It will reportedly be launched aboard a Vulcan Centaur as a payload.
