Spire Inc. is a regional public utility holding company based in St. Louis, Missouri, providing natural gas service through its regulated core utility operations while engaging in non-regulated activities that provide business opportunities. Its primary subsidiary Laclede Gas Company is the largest natural gas distribution utility in Missouri, serving approximately 631,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers in the City of St. Louis and ten counties in eastern Missouri. Its corporate headquarters is located in the 700 Market building in downtown St. Louis.

On April 29, 2016, the company began trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol SR. It had previously been known as the Laclede Group, trading under the symbol LG. [4]

History

Laclede Gas Company was one of the original 12 industrial companies that made up the Dow Jones Industrial Average but was removed in 1899. [5] On December 7, 2009, executives from The Laclede Group visited the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) to ring the closing bell and commemorate the company’s 120th anniversary of trading on the exchange. The Company first listed its stock on November 14, 1889[ citation needed ], making it the 8th-oldest listed stock on the NYSE.

On February 1, 2012, Laclede hired its first female CEO, Suzanne Sitherwood. Sitherwood earned a bachelor of science degree in industrial engineering technology from the Southern College of Technology and an MBA from Brenau University. [6]

In 2013, The Laclede Group acquired Missouri Gas Energy from Southern Union Company, [7] expanding their Missouri holdings to include Kansas City.

In 2014 Laclede acquired Alabama Gas Corporation (Alagasco), [8] which serves the Greater Birmingham, East Lauderdale County, Gadsden, Jasper, Anniston-Oxford, Greater Tuscaloosa, Greater Montgomery, Opelika-Auburn, Tuskegee, Selma, and many Black Belt communities as Spire Alabama Inc.

On April 28, 2016, The Laclede Group shareholders approved renaming the company to Spire. [9] Later in 2016, Spire acquired Energy South, Inc from Sempra U.S. Gas & Power, the parent company of Mobile Gas and Willmut Gas. [10] Mobile Gas operates in Mobile, Alabama as Spire Gulf Coast Inc. while Willmut gas operates in Hattiesburg, Mississippi as Spire Mississippi Inc..

The Union Electric Company of Missouri was an electric power utility that was organized in 1902 and grew to be one of the large U.S. companies listed among the S&P 500. In 1997, its holding company merged with a smaller neighboring utility, Central Illinois Public Service Company through its holding company, CIPSCO Inc., to form Ameren Corporation based in St. Louis, Missouri.

The Central Illinois Public Service Company was an electric streetcar holding company and power utility first organized in 1902. Under its later quarter billion dollar holding company, CIPSCO Inc., it merged in 1997 with the larger neighboring Union Electric Company of Missouri to form Ameren Corporation based in St. Louis, Missouri. Now a subsidiary, Ameren Illinois is headquartered in Springfield, Illinois.

NiSource Inc. is one of the largest fully regulated utility companies in the United States, serving approximately 3.5 million natural gas customers and 500,000 electric customers across six states through its local Columbia Gas and NIPSCO brands. The company, based in Merrillville, Indiana, has more than 8,000 employees. As of 2018, NiSource is the sole Indiana-based utility company.

Energen Corporation was a company engaged in hydrocarbon exploration. In 2018, the company was acquired by Diamondback Energy.

Laclede Gas Company is the largest natural gas distribution utility in Missouri, serving about 632,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers in the city of St. Louis and ten counties in eastern Missouri. As an adjunct to its gas distribution business, the company operates an underground natural gas storage field, a propane storage cavern, and propane vaporization facilities.

Missouri Gas Energy (MGE) was a natural gas distribution company headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri in the United States, with offices in St. Joseph, Lee's Summit, Warrensburg, Joplin, Republic, Neosho and Monett. MGE served over in 155 western Missouri communities and was a division of the Southern Union Company until it was ultimately sold to the Spire Inc. Its business is regulated by the Missouri Public Service Commission.

Mobile Gas, headquartered in Mobile, Alabama, was the largest natural gas utility in coastal Alabama that provided energy to 89,000 homes and businesses. Its operations dated back to 1836 when it began providing gas lighting for the city of Mobile. It had distribution territory in the cities of Mobile, Prichard, Saraland, Satsuma, Semmes, Bayou La Batre, Creola, Mt. Vernon, Spanish Fort, and Loxley. Within those cities, Mobile Gas operated 2,250 miles of pipeline and about 46 miles of transmission lines.

Southern Union Company was a natural gas utility and energy resources company based in Houston, Texas. In 2012, the company was acquired by Energy Transfer Partners.
