Speed skating is a competitive form of ice skating in which the competitors race each other in travelling a certain distance on skates. Types of speed skating are long-track speed skating, short-track speed skating, and marathon speed skating. In the Olympic Games, long-track speed skating is usually referred to as just "speed skating", while short-track speed skating is known as "short track". The International Skating Union (ISU), the governing body of competitive ice sports, refers to long track as "speed skating" and short track as "short track skating".
The 7-Eleven Cycling Team, later the Motorola Cycling Team, was a professional cycling team founded in the U.S. in 1981 by Jim Ochowicz, a former U.S. Olympic cyclist. The team lasted 16 years, under the sponsorship of 7-Eleven through 1990 and then Motorola from 1990 through 1996. From 1989 to 1996 it rode on Eddy Merckx bikes.
Vikingskipet, officially known as Hamar Olympic Hall, is an indoor multi-use sport and event venue in Hamar, Norway. It was built as the speed skating rink for the 1994 Winter Olympics, and has since also hosted events and tournaments in ice speedway, motorcycle speedway, rally, association football, bandy, ice sledge speed racing, flying disc and track cycling. The arena is also used for concerts, trade fair and the annual computer party The Gathering. It is the home arena of Hamar IL bandy team. The venue is owned by Hamar Municipality, and along with Hamar Olympic Amphitheatre is run by the municipal Hamar Olympiske Anlegg. Vikingskipet has a capacity for 10,600 spectators during sporting events and 20,000 during concerts.
Connie Carpenter-Phinney is an American retired racing cyclist and speed skater who won four medals in World Cycling Championship competitions in the late 1970s and early 1980s. She also won the gold medal in the cycling road race at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, as well as twelve U.S. national championships. She remains the youngest American woman to compete at the Winter Olympics.
Bjørg Eva Jensen is a speed skater from Norway. She had her best year in 1980, when she became junior world allround champion, finished third at the senior allround world championships, and won the 3,000 m event at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid.
Roald Edgar Aas was a speed skater and cyclist from Norway. He was born in Oslo. Aas was the number two speed skater in Norway through the entire 1950s—initially after Hjalmar Andersen, later after Knut Johannesen. He became Norwegian champion once, in 1956, but finished second seven times.
Cathrine Grage is a Danish speedskater, inline skater and cyclist. As of January 2012, Grage has set a total of 61 successive national records, and holds all of the Danish women's records in speed skating, at all distances. In addition, she holds various national samalogue records, though not all of these have been ratified by the Danish skating association.
Janneke Ensing is a Dutch former sportsperson, who competed in speed skating in the 2000s before becoming a cyclist, competing for seven different teams between 2009 and 2021.
Maren Haugli is a Norwegian retired long track speed skater who participated in international competitions.
Lisbeth Korsmo was a Norwegian speed skater, cyclist, and Olympic medalist. She received a bronze medal at the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck. She also won the Norwegian National Road Race Championship in 1981. She died on 22 January 2017 at the age of 69.
Hege Bøkko is a Norwegian long-track speedskater, and the younger sister of Håvard Bøkko.
Wilhelm Henie was a Norwegian sportsman and furrier. He was track cycling World Champion in 1894, and competed at the European Speed Skating Championships in 1896. Henie was coach and manager for his daughter Sonja, who became a famous figure skater and later film actress.
Odd Berg was a Norwegian cyclist. He competed in the individual and team road race events at the 1952 Summer Olympics. He won the Norwegian National Road Race Championship in 1951, 1952 and 1955.
Martin Sæterhaug was a Norwegian speed skater and cyclist. He won silver medals at the 1908 and 1911 World Allround Speed Skating Championships and a bronze medal in 1910. In cycling, he competed in two events at the 1912 Summer Olympics.
Floortje Mackaij is a Dutch professional road racing cyclist, who currently rides for UCI Women's WorldTeam Movistar Team.
Reidar Bohlin Borgersen is a Norwegian former racing cyclist, and speed skater. He rode at the 2014 UCI Road World Championships, and was the 2012 and 2014 winner of the Norwegian National Time Trial Championships.
Riejanne Ockeloen-Markus is a Dutch professional racing cyclist, who currently rides for UCI Women's Continental Team Visma–Lease a Bike. In 2022, Markus won the Dutch National Road Race Championships. A year later she won the Dutch National Time Trial Championships, beating Demi Vollering and Annemiek van Vleuten. Markus is the older sister of SD Worx rider Femke Markus, but they are not related to Barry Markus and his sister Kelly Markus. On October 21, 2023 she married Dutch cyclist, beachracer and gravel specialist Jasper Ockeloen.
Kirsti Lay is a Canadian former professional racing cyclist, who rode professionally for UCI Women's Team Rally UHC Cycling between 2016 and 2019. She rode at the 2015 UCI Track Cycling World Championships, winning a bronze medal in the Team Pursuit. In 2016, she was named in Canada's 2016 Olympic team. She won the bronze medal in the team pursuit event.
May Britt Nilsen is a Norwegian former professional racing cyclist. She won the Norwegian National Road Race Championship five times in the 1970s.
Monique Kauffman is a Dutch road cyclist, track cyclist and speed skater.
