Laguna Seca Raceway is a paved road racing track in central California used for both auto racing and motorcycle racing, built in 1957 near both Salinas and Monterey, California, United States.
Teodorico Fabi is an Italian former racing driver. He competed in Formula One, IndyCar, and sports car racing. He claimed pole position in his rookie year at the 1983 Indianapolis 500. Teo is the older brother of former Formula One driver Corrado Fabi.
Maurício Gugelmin is a Brazilian former racing driver. He took part in both Formula One and Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART). He participated in 80 Formula One Grands Prix, debuting in 1988 for the March team. Gugelmin achieved one top-three finish and scored a total of ten championship points in the series. He competed in CART between 1993 and 2001, starting 147 races. Gugelmin won one race, in 1997 in Vancouver, finishing fourth in the championship that year. His best result in the Indianapolis 500 was in 1995 where he started and finished in sixth position, leading 59 laps. For a period, he held the world speed record for a closed race track, set at California Speedway in 1997 at a speed of 240.942 mph (387.759 km/h). Gugelmin retired at the end of 2001 after a year that included the death of his third child.
Gerard Carlton "Pete" Lovely was a racecar driver and businessman from the United States. He was born in Livingston, Montana.
Bryan John Herta is an American race strategist and former race car driver. He currently runs his own team, Bryan Herta Autosport in the NTT IndyCar Series and is the strategist for the #27 Andretti Autosport in the same series. His team won the 2011 Indianapolis 500 with driver Dan Wheldon and the 2016 Indianapolis 500 with driver Alexander Rossi. He is the father and former strategist of IndyCar driver Colton Herta.
Gonzalo "Gonchi" Rodríguez Bongoll was a Uruguayan racing driver. He was killed in an accident at Laguna Seca Raceway during practice for a CART race.

The 1999 FedEx Championship Series season, the twenty-first in the Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART) era of American open-wheel car racing. It consisted of 20 races, beginning in Homestead, Florida on March 21 and concluding in Fontana, California on October 31. The season was marred by the fatal accidents of Gonzalo Rodríguez during practice for the Laguna Seca round and Greg Moore at the final round, in addition to various injuries that took several drivers out of championship contention.

Emerson Fittipaldi won the Indy 500, his second career victory in that event.

Arie Luyendyk won the Indy 500, his first-ever victory in championship-level competition, and the fastest 500 until the 2013 Indianapolis 500.

Tom Sneva won the Indy 500, after three previous runner-up finishes.

The Firestone Grand Prix of Monterey is an IndyCar Series race held at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca near Monterey, California. The event dates back to 1960, and became an American open wheel race in 1983. The race was part of the CART/Champ Car series from 1983 through 2004. After a fifteen-year hiatus, the event returned in 2019 as part of the IndyCar Series, replacing Sonoma.
Jean-Pierre Frey is a former Swiss racing driver from Baselgia, Medel (Lucmagn). He competed in full seasons of the FIA Formula 3000 Championship in 1986 and 1987 but failed to qualify for a single race in a time when the series was incredibly competitive. Frey went to the United States to race in two CART Championship Car races in 1988 for Dick Simon Racing and two more for Euromotorsport in 1989. He entered the 1989 Indianapolis 500 but his entry was declined due to a lack of experience. His best CART finish was 13th place in his debut at Laguna Seca Raceway. Frey also participated in sports car racing, including the World Sports Car Championship, the 1985 and 1988 24 Hours of Le Mans, and the 1989 24 Hours of Daytona where he drove a Zakspeed prepared Ford Probe GT-Prototype with teammates Marty Roth and Albert Naon, Jr.
The 1996 PPG Indy Car World Series season was the eighteenth in the Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART) era of American open-wheel car racing. It consisted of 16 races, beginning in Homestead, Florida on March 3 and concluding in Monterey, California on September 8. This was the first season after the split with the Indy Racing League and the last year that CART operated as "IndyCar," with the trademark reverting to Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The Indianapolis 500 was replaced by the U.S. 500, held in Brooklyn, Michigan.
