Tony Flores is a Filipino Canadian paracanoe athlete who lives in Edmonton, Alberta. He served as the first appointed advocate at the Office of the Advocate for Persons with Disabilities with the Government of Alberta.

Para-athletics

As a para-athlete, Flores has competed internationally, including as a member of Canada's paracanoe team at the 2009 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships in Canada, [1] [2] which was the premiere of paracanoe in sport competition. [3] Flores also competed in paracanoe at the 2010 event in Poland and in 2011 in Hungary. [2] He has also competed in wheelchair racing and para-Nordic skiing. [4]

Flores has served as the director of the Whang Youn Dai Achievement Award for eight Paralympic Games. [1] [2] Additionally, he has served on the board of directors of the nonprofit Alberta Sport Connection, from 2016 to 2018. [5]

Advocacy

On October 30, 2018, Flores was appointed as the first Advocate for Persons with Disabilities, with the opening of the Office of the Advocate for Persons with Disabilities within the Government of Alberta. His three-year term ended on October 31, 2021. [4] [6] [1]

Flores is the inspiration for the children's book Tony's Wheels, by Mila Bongco-Philipzig. [7]

Robert Daniel Steadward, is a Canadian retired sports administrator, professor, sports scientist, and author. Steadward helped organize the first Canadian wheelchair sport national championships in 1968, and later coached Canada in wheelchair basketball at the Summer Paralympics. He became a professor at the University of Alberta in 1971, later served as chairman of the Department of Athletics, and published more than 150 papers about disability sport. He was the founding president of the Alberta Wheelchair Sports Association in 1971, founded the Research and Training Centre for Athletes with Disabilities in 1978, served as president of the Canadian Paralympic Committee from 1984 to 1990, and later became a member of the Canadian Olympic Committee.

David John Rolfe was a leg amputee Paralympic swimming and paracanoe competitor from Australia. He won a bronze medal at the 2000 Sydney Games in the Men's 4 × 100 m Medley 34 pts swimming event. He also competed in paracanoe world championship events.

Paracanoe classification is the classification system for paracanoe. It consists of three categories KL1, KL2 and KL3. Paracanoe will be included for the first time at the 2016 Rio Paralympics. The sport is governed by the International Canoe Federation.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Paracanoe at the Summer Paralympics</span>

Paracanoe debuted at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro. A meeting of the International Paralympic Committee in Guangzhou, China in 2010 decided to add paracanoe to the roster of the Summer Paralympic Games.

Curtis Wain McGrath, is an Australian paracanoeist and former soldier. He took up canoeing competitively after both of his legs were amputated as a result of a mine blast while serving with the Australian Army in Afghanistan. McGrath won consecutive gold medals in the Men's KL2 at the 2016 Rio and 2020 Tokyo Paralympics, and has won ten gold medals and a silver at ICF Paracanoe World Championships between 2014 and 2019.

Emma Clare Wiggs, is a British paracanoeist and former sitting volleyball player, who competes in the KL2 classification of paracanoe. She won gold at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in the KL2 category, gold and silver at the 2020 Summer Paralympics in VL2 and KL2 categories, and is also an eleven-time world champion. As a volleyball player she was part of the Great Britain team that competed at the 2012 Summer Paralympics.

The KL3 class is for paracanoe paddlers with trunk function and partial leg function. A KL3 class paddler should be able to sit within a forward flexed position. Paddlers use a foot board or the seat to propel the boat. Eligible paddlers typically meet one of the following:

The KL 2 class is for paracanoe paddlers with partial leg and trunk function alongside good arm strength. A KL2 class paddler should be able to sit upright within the kayak but may require a backrest. These athletes may be able to use a footboard to propel the canoe depending on leg function. Eligible paddlers typically meet one of the following:

The KL1 Class is for paracanoe paddlers who have very limited or no trunk function and no leg function. A KL1 class paddler is able to apply force predominantly using the arms and/or shoulders. These athletes will likely also have poor sitting balance and typically need a seat with a high backrest. Eligible paddlers typically meet one of the following:

Hope Gordon is a British paracanoeist and a para Nordic skier. She competed at the 2022 Winter Paralympics becoming Great Britain's first ever female para Nordic skier. She is a three-time World silver medalist in paracanoe.
