The City of Botany Bay was a local government area in the eastern region of Sydney,in the state of New South Wales,Australia. The area encompassed the suburbs to the north of Botany Bay,such as Botany. First proclaimed in 1888 as the "Borough of Botany",the council became the "Municipality of Botany" from 1906 to 1996,when it was proclaimed a city as the "City of Botany Bay".
The South Sydney City Council was a former local government area covering the inner-eastern and inner-Southern Sydney suburbs of Sydney. It was forcibly merged with the Sydney City Council by the New South Wales State Government in 2004. The council chambers were located in the Erskineville Town Hall,with the administrative offices at Joynton Avenue in Zetland. Following federation,the government of the newly formed Commonwealth of Australia passed the Commonwealth Franchise Act 1902 allowing most women to both vote and stand at the 1903 Federal election. South Australia and Western Australia granted women the vote before federation,and the states of New South Wales,Tasmania,Queensland and Victoria also passed legislation allowing women to participate in government at the state and local levels following federation. Indigenous Australian women did not achieve suffrage at all levels of government and in all states and territories until 1962.
