Anthony Graham Small (19 April 1936 –29 November 2021) was a New Zealand athlete. He played representative cricket and rugby union.
Small was born to Dannevirke farmer William Small and his wife Winifred in 1936,the youngest of nine children. He attended North Primary School in Dannevirke and then was a boarder at Napier Boys' High School from 1950 to 1953. He was Head of Hostel and in the first XV rugby team. He later became a stock buyer. [1]
Small played ten seasons for Hawke's Bay playing mostly at flanker,frequently paired with the Kel Tremain. A rare goalkicking forward,he scored a then provincial record of 435 points by the time he retired in 1965. He played in many notable matches such as the 52-12 loss to the British Lions during their 1959 tour. He kicked Hawke’s Bay's only points in their 1961 and 1963 Ranfurly Shield challenges against Auckland at Eden Park,lost 5-3 and drawn 3-3 respectively,and kicking a penalty and a conversion when beaten 21-17 challenging Taranaki for the shield in New Plymouth in 1965. His final representative match was against the touring South African team's 30-12 win at McLean Park. He was later Hawke's Bay's coach,including in the inaugural National Provincial Championship season in 1976. [1]
As a cricketer he played for Southern Hawke's Bay and was in the Central Districts squad for two seasons. He played in just one first-class match,however,in 1955/56. [2] The match was a narrow 16-run loss at McLean Park against Canterbury,which saw them win the Plunket Shield in an exciting finish. [3]
With his first wife Maureen,Small ran a jewellery shop in Dannevirke for some years. In retirement he moved to Havelock North in the 1990's and was active in bowls. He won three Hawke's Bay Centre bowling titles,including a Champion of Champion Triples,and eight Havelock North club titles,including once being the singles champion. He died in 2021,survived by second wife Jo,first wife Maureen,two sons,one daughter,seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. [1]

First played in 1976,it is the second highest level of competition in New Zealand alongside the Ranfurly Shield. It is organised by New Zealand Rugby (NZR) and since 2021,it has been known as the Bunnings NPC after its headline sponsor. A concurrent women's tournament is also held,the Farah Palmer Cup.
The Ranfurly Shield,colloquially known as the Log o' Wood,is a trophy in New Zealand's domestic rugby union competition. First played for in 1904,the Shield is based on a challenge system. The holding union must defend the shield in challenge matches,which are usually played at the shield holder's home venue,and if the challenger is successful in their challenge they will become the new holder of the Shield. There is a tradition for the first challenges of a new rugby season to be played against smaller associations from the Heartland Championship.

The CRFU govern the running of the Canterbury representative team which have won New Zealand's first-tier domestic competition National Provincial Championship 14 times including a "six-peat" from 2008 to 2013 –with five in the National Provincial Championship,two in the Air New Zealand Cup,five in the ITM Cup and one in the Mitre 10 Cup. Central Vikings Rugby Union was a New Zealand rugby union team that played in the second division of the NPC for two seasons in 1997 and 1998. The team,formed from the merger of the Hawke's Bay and Manawatu unions,featured current and future All Blacks and a former All Black in coach Frank Oliver. It came second in its division in 1997,and first in 1998,and would have progressed to the first division. However,following financial trouble it split back into the two separate unions.

The 2009 Air New Zealand Cup was the 33rd provincial rugby union competition,the fourth since the competition's reconstruction in 2006,involving the top 14 provincial unions in New Zealand. It ran for 15 weeks from 30 July to 7 November. It was also the last edition of the provincial competition to use the Air New Zealand Cup name,as the competition's sponsorship contract with Air New Zealand ended after that season. The 2010 competition will be held under a new name,the ITM Cup.

The 2015 ITM Cup season was the tenth season of New Zealand's provincial rugby union competition since it turned professional in 2006. The regular season began on August 13,when Southland hosted Auckland. It involved the top fourteen rugby unions of New Zealand. For sponsorship reasons,the competition was known as the ITM Cup and it was the sixth season under the lead sponsor. The winner of the Championship,Hawke's Bay was promoted to the Premiership,the seventh placed Premiership team,Manawatu was relegated to the Championship.
John Patrick Kirwan,more commonly known as "Jack Kirwan",was a rugby union and rugby league player. He represented the Hawke's Bay province and Auckland in rugby union before switching to rugby league in 1924. He was selected for the New Zealand team in 1925 becoming Kiwi number 174 in the process. His grandson was also named John Kirwan and he went on to become a famous All Black in the 1980s and 90s before also switching to rugby league.
Clifford Samuel Gibbs was a New Zealand cricketer. He played in one first-class match in the Plunket Shield for Canterbury in 1930 and played in the Hawke Cup for Marlborough.
