Tony Trigilio (born 1966 in Erie, Pennsylvania) is an American poet, editor, and scholar. He is best known for his work with documentary poetics, popular culture, and autobiography, and for his innovative approaches to poetic form.
Trigilio earned a bachelor's degree from Kent State University in 1988, and a master's degree (1990) and Ph.D. (1997) from Northeastern University. [1]
Trigilio has taught since 1999 at Columbia College Chicago, where he is a professor of English and Creative Writing. He directed Columbia College's M.F.A. program from 2006 to 2009 and from 2012 to 2015, and chaired the school's Creative Writing Department from 2015 to 2017. [1]
He is the author and editor of sixteen books, including, most recently, Craft: A Memoir (Marsh Hawk Press, 2023); The Beats and the Academy: A Renegotiation, co-edited with Erik Mortenson (Clemson University Press / Liverpool University Press, 2023); Proof Something Happened, selected by Susan Howe as the winner of the Marsh Hawk Press Poetry Prize (Marsh Hawk, 2021); and Ghosts of the Upper Floor (BlazeVOX [books], 2019), the third installment in his multivolume epic poem, The Complete Dark Shadows (of My Childhood). A volume of his selected poems, Fuera del Taller del Cosmos, was published in Guatemala in 2018 by Editorial Poe (translated by Bony Hernández).
His poems have been anthologized widely, most recently in The Best American Poetry (Scribner, 2023), The Eloquent Poem (Persea Books, 2019), The Golden Shovel Anthology: New Poems Honoring Gwendolyn Brooks (University of Arkansas Press, 2017), and Obsessions: Sestinas in the Twenty-First Century (Dartmouth College Press, 2014), among others.
Poet and scholar Joseph Harrington has praised Trigilio as “one of the most versatile writers in the U.S. today,” noting that Trigilio is “stretching not only poetry, but narrative as well. His books have various forms, voices and topics. You never know what he’ll do next.” [2] Trigilio's innovative incorporation of historical research in his poems has made him a significant figure in contemporary documentary poetry. Reviewing his collection Historic Diary, Margaret Rozga argues that Trigilio's poems “insist that the unanswered questions of history haunt us long after the events are over.” [3] In a review of Trigilio's collection Proof Something Happened, Jerome Sala notes that Trigilio's “Rashomon style” documentary poetics evokes “a sense of time travel: the documentarian style brings you back to the originary moments. You feel you are as close as possible to actual events.” [4]
Trigilio has earned acclaim for his inventive work with popular culture, autobiography, and poetic form—most notably in his multivolume epic poem, The Complete Dark Shadows (of My Childhood). For this ongoing project begun in 2011, Trigilio is re-watching every episode of the 1960s gothic soap opera, Dark Shadows , which he saw every afternoon with his mother when he was a small child. He writes one sentence in response to each Dark Shadows episode, then shapes these sentences into poetry, prose, and hybrid forms, using each sentence as a conduit for autobiographical explorations. Maggie Millner has praised the project as Trigilio's “effort to face his demons, compose his memoirs, and keep alive the memory of his mother—all the while combining elements of kitsch, ekphrasis, and new formalism.” [5] Joe Milazzo commends the project as a contemporary example of the Italian concept of sprezzatura , first coined in 1528 by Baldassare Castiglione in The Book of the Courtier and defined by Milazzo as the “nonchalant performance of virtuosity.” [6] The third volume in the series, Ghosts of the Upper Floor, was published by BlazeVOX in 2019. Volume Four, The Punishment Book, is forthcoming from BlazeVOX in 2024.
With Arielle Greenberg and David Trinidad, he co-founded the poetry magazine Court Green in 2004. From 2004 to 2015, Court Green was published in conjunction with Columbia College, and twelve issues of the magazine appeared during that time. In 2017, Trigilio and Trinidad revived Court Green as an independent online poetry journal. Aaron Smith joined Court Green as a co-editor in 2020. [7]
Trigilio also has published a wide range of literary criticism and scholarship. He is the author of Allen Ginsberg's Buddhist Poetics (Southern Illinois University Press, 2012 [paperback]; 2007 [cloth]) and “Strange Prophecies Anew”: Rereading Apocalypse in Blake, H.D., and Ginsberg (Fairleigh Dickinson University Press, 2000). In 2014, he edited a posthumous collection of Elise Cowen’s work, Elise Cowen: Poems and Fragments (Ahsahta Press, 2014). [8]
A past recipient of an Illinois Arts Council Fellowship in Poetry, [9] he lives in Chicago.
Irwin Allen Ginsberg was an American poet and writer. As a student at Columbia University in the 1940s, he began friendships with Lucien Carr, William S. Burroughs and Jack Kerouac, forming the core of the Beat Generation. He vigorously opposed militarism, economic materialism, and sexual repression, and he embodied various aspects of this counterculture with his views on drugs, sex, multiculturalism, hostility to bureaucracy, and openness to Eastern religions.
Anne Waldman is an American poet. Since the 1960s, Waldman has been an active member of the Outriders Poetry Project experimental poetry community as a writer, performer, collaborator, professor, editor, scholar, and cultural/political activist. She has also been connected to the Beat Generation poets.
Tom Pickard is a poet, and documentary film maker who was an important initiator of the movement known as the British Poetry Revival.

Ronald William Loewinsohn was an American poet and novelist who was associated with the poetry of the San Francisco Renaissance since his inclusion in Donald Allen's 1960 poetry anthology, The New American Poetry 1945–1960. He was Professor Emeritus of English at the University of California, Berkeley.
Howl and Other Poems is a collection of poetry by Allen Ginsberg published November 1, 1956. It contains Ginsberg's most famous poem, "Howl", which is considered to be one of the principal works of the Beat Generation as well as "A Supermarket in California", "Transcription of Organ Music", "Sunflower Sutra", "America", "In the Baggage Room at Greyhound", and some of his earlier works. For printing the collection, the publisher Lawrence Ferlinghetti, another well-known poet, was arrested and charged with obscenity. On October 3, 1957, Judge Clayton W. Horn found Ferlinghetti not guilty of the obscenity charge, and 5,000 more copies of the text were printed to meet the public demand, which had risen in response to the publicity surrounding the trial. Howl and Other Poems contains two of the most well-known poems from the Beat Generation, "Howl" and "A Supermarket in California", which have been reprinted in other collections, including the Norton Anthology of American Literature.
Gloria Frym is an American poet, fiction writer, and essayist.
William James Austin was a New York City poet, writer, musician, visual artist, and academic. Austin received his PhD on fellowship from Tulane University in New Orleans, and was an associate professor of English and philosophy, and artistic director of the Visiting Writers Program at SUNY, Farmingdale. He is the author of five collections of poetry, essays, and "photopo", plus a book length study of T.S. Eliot and Jacques Derrida. His visual art has been exhibited in the USA, Germany, and Mexico.

"Wichita Vortex Sutra" is an anti-war poem by Allen Ginsberg, written in 1966. It appears in his collection Planet News and has also been published in Collected Poems 1947-1995 and Collected Poems 1947-1980. The poem presents Ginsberg as speaker, focusing on his condemnation of the Vietnam War. It features imagery of the war and America's Heartland interspersed with news reports and cultural references. It is also written in Ginsberg's distinctive Whitman-like long-prose style.
Norman Henry Pritchard, was an American poet. He was a member of the Umbra poets, a collective of Black writers in Manhattan's Lower East Side founded in 1962. Pritchard's avant-garde poetry often includes unconventional typography and spacing, as in "Harbour," or lack sentences entirely, as in " " ".

Harriet Zinnes was an American poet, fiction writer, translator, art critic, literary scholar and professor. She is associated with poets such as Karl Shapiro, Delmore Schwartz, and Allen Ginsberg, and the writer Anaïs Nin.
Richard Owens is an American poet. Known also for his work as a publisher and critic, he is founding editor of the literary journal Damn the Caesars and co-founder of the left-wing punk band Those Unknown. His poetic work appears in several volumes, including Delaware Memoranda (2008), No Class (2012), Ballads, and the collected volume Poems (2019). A number of his literary essays, most of which earlier appeared in scholarly and small press publications, are included in the collection Sauvage: Essays on Anglophone Poetry (2019).
