The Tour de Kyushu is an annual professional road bicycle racing stage race held in Kyushu, Japan for the first time in October 2023, as part of the UCI Asia Tour. [1] [2] It is rated by the International Cycling Union (UCI) as a 2.1 category race. [3] The race was created to showcase the recovery from recent disasters in Kyushu. [4]

2023 edition

The main sponsor for the 2023 edition will be the Mynavi Corporation  [ ja ]. [5] Three-stages will make up the race plus a pre race criterium. [6] The Criterium will be multiple laps of a small city circuit for a total of 45km. [7] Stage 1 will be a 145km route from Kitakyushu to Ōmuta. [8] Stage 2 will be 120km and be on hilly terrain going through the Aso Mountains, starting in Minami Oguni and ending in Minami Aso. [9] The final stage of the race will be a stage for the sprinters of 135km starting with a decent followed by laps of a circuit around Hita to finish. [10]

In preparation for the Race in 2023 the organisers ran a virtual race with segments from each of the stages. [11]

The 1953 North Kyushu flood was a flood which hit Northern Kyushu, Japan in June 1953. The flood was caused by cloudbursts and prolonged rain from the Meiyu rain front which dropped 1,000 mm of rain over Mount Aso and Mount Hiko. This downpour resulted in the overflow of many of the surrounding rivers, such as the Chikugo River.

The Tour de Okinawa is an annual professional road bicycle racing classic one-day race held in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. It was first started in 1989 as an amateur race, but became professional in 1999. It became part of the UCI Asia Tour in 2005. Until 2007, it was a one-day race, billing itself as the longest single-day course in Japan, but was transformed into a two-day stage race in 2008, its UCI category changing from 1.2 to 2.2. In 2008, the first day was a criterium, but from 2009, it was changed to a time trial run on the streets of Nago. The 2010 edition extended the second stage to 210 kilometers. The 2012 edition again returned to a single-day event.
