Toyota Big Air is a Japanese snowboarding (Straight jump) contest. This contest has been held in the Makomanai Open Stadium, Sapporo, Hokkaido since 1997, and from 2012 at the Sapporo Dome. The organizing office of the event announced on September 30, 2014 that the event would no longer take place, making the previous event held on February 23, 2014 the final edition.

The 1972 Winter Olympics, officially the XI Olympic Winter Games and commonly known as Sapporo 1972, was a winter multi-sport event held from February 3 to 13, 1972, in Sapporo, Japan. It was the first Winter Olympic Games to take place outside Europe and North America.

The 2008 IIHF Division I World Championship was an ice hockey tournament under the authority of the International Ice Hockey Federation. It was contested from April 13–19, 2008. The tournament was played amongst two separate groups, with the best team in each group, Austria and Hungary, advanced to the top-level championship in 2009. The bottom teams in each group, South Korea and Estonia, were relegated to the lower-level Division II.
Li Huirong is a retired triple jumper from People's Republic of China, who set the first IAAF-recognized women's triple jump world record of 14.54 metres on August 25, 1990 at a meet in Sapporo, Japan. She claimed the bronze medal in the women's long jump at the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi, India.
The 2017 Asian Winter Games was the 8th edition of the Asian Winter Games. They were hosted in Sapporo and Obihiro in Hokkaido, Japan. These Games were originally scheduled for 2015, however, in the Olympic Council of Asia's general assembly in Singapore on 3 July 2009, the committee decided to move the Games to one year before the Winter Olympics moving forward. The games began on 19 February with the opening ceremony and ended with the closing ceremony on 26 February.
The New Beginning is an annual professional wrestling event promoted by New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW). The event has been held since 2011 as a pay-per-view (PPV). From 2013 to 2014, the event also aired outside Japan as an internet pay-per-view (iPPV). Since 2015, the event has aired worldwide on NJPW's internet streaming site, NJPW World. The event is held in February, the month following NJPW's biggest annual event, the January 4 Dome Show, usually the culmination point of major storylines. As the name of the event suggests, it marks the beginning of a new year for the promotion. Since 2012, the event is mainly held at Osaka Prefectural Gymnasium in Osaka.

Ski jumping at the 2017 Asian Winter Games was held in Sapporo, Japan between 22 February to 25 February 2017 at the Miyanomori Ski Jump Stadium for the normal hill and Okurayama Ski Jump Stadium for the large hill. A total of three events were contested ; normal hill, large hill and team large hill. Host nation Japan dominated the competition winning all three gold medals.
Freestyle skiing at the 2017 Asian Winter Games was held in Sapporo, Japan between 24–26 February at the Sapporo Bankei Ski Area. A total of four events were contested: men's and women's dual moguls and moguls.

Cross-country skiing at the 2017 Asian Winter Games was held in Sapporo, Japan between 20–26 February at Shirahatayama Open Stadium. A total of ten events were contested, five for each gender.
Curling at the 2017 Asian Winter Games was held in Sapporo, Japan between 18–24 February at Sapporo Curling Stadium. A total of two events were contested: a men's and women's tournaments. Curling returns to the competition schedule after missing out at the last edition of the games in 2011.
The New Beginning in Sapporo (2018) was a professional wrestling event promoted by New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW). The event took place on January 27 and 28, 2018, in Sapporo, Hokkaido, at the Hokkaido Prefectural Sports Center. The first night of the event featured nine matches, two of which were contested for championships, while the second night featured two championship matches out of nine matches overall. In the main event of the first night, Minoru Suzuki defeated Hiroshi Tanahashi to become the new IWGP Intercontinental Champion, and on the second night Jay White defeated Kenny Omega to become the new IWGP United States Heavyweight Champion. This was the thirteenth event under the New Beginning name and the second to take place in Sapporo.
