Transport for Cornwall (Cornish : Karyans rag Kernow) is a partnership between local government and transport operators responsible for the development and integration of the transport network in Cornwall, England. [1]
Transport for Cornwall is responsible for council-funded buses in Cornwall, with various national and local bus companies running the services via franchise. It does not oversee any other forms of public transport in the county, which are limited to passenger rail, air, and ferry services.
Transport for Cornwall branding arose from the One Public Transport System for Cornwall plan, created by Cornwall Council in 2015, when limited devolution powers were given to Cornwall which included public transport governance. [2] Prior to this, the bus network in Cornwall was run by multiple private operators, with no integrated timetabling nor ticketing, with some tendered services being funded by the council to improve rural access. Traveline provided some combined journey planning.
Under Cornwall's first devolution deal in 2015, the county was given the power to develop and franchise bus transport. [3] Cornwall Council initially invested in new facilities such as waiting areas, vehicles and real-time arrival displays at bus stops. This was done with extra funding from the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Local Enterprise Partnership, GWR and Plymouth's Transforming Cities Fund. This was done in cooperation with various local bus operators under the title 'One Public Transport System for Cornwall'. [1]
In January 2020, Cornwall Council awarded Go Cornwall Bus an 8-year contract (totalling £192 million) to provide bus services under the scheme. [4] [5]
In March 2020, Go Cornwall Bus partnered with Cornwall Council and local operators to form the new Transport for Cornwall brand, with plans calling for an additional 130 vehicles. The Transport for Cornwall website went live on 14 March 2020. [2]

Transport for Cornwall is not an organisation, but a partnership of organisations. However, it does has staff, both direct and seconded from participating companies and Cornwall Council.[ citation needed ]
The partnership is responsible for training drivers and plans routes. It directly runs most of Go Cornwall Bus services and subsidises others.
Transport for Cornwall's funding comes from a mixture of sources including direct central government funding, direct community development funding, indirect funding such as fare schemes, and private investment in vehicles from member companies. [2]

Under Transport for Cornwall's 'Any Ticket, Any Bus' ticketing system, all participating companies now use one ticket system for journeys inside Cornwall. [6] Despite not being part of the scheme, Stagecoach buses on routes inside Cornwall also accept tickets from other operators, as long as the journey on the original ticket is completely within Cornwall. [7]
Exceptions to the Any Bus, Any Ticket scheme are college and university passes, Park & Ride, and contract buses.
Transport for Cornwall received £23.5 million in 2022 from the UK Government as a pilot scheme to increase ridership by reducing bus fares. Fares were therefore further simplified and reduced in April 2022. [7]
Transport for Cornwall's multi-operator capped contactless ticket system, Tap & Cap, caps travel charges at a maximum of £5 a day or £20 a week (as of January 2023), regardless of the number of trips. Passengers pay onboard by tapping their contactless payment method when entering and leaving the bus. Tap & Cap supports Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay and Android Pay. However, not all companies in the network offer contactless payment, and other fares (including child fares, town zone fares, singles and returns) cannot be bought via Tap & Cap. These can still be bought using cash or contactless methods from the driver in contactless-equipped vehicles. [8] [7]
Cheaper fares are available for travel only within 14 defined "town zones": Penzance, Hayle, St Ives, Camborne, Redruth, Helston, Falmouth-Penryn, Newquay, St Austell, Bodmin, Truro, Bude, Launceston, and Liskeard. [7]
Inspired by Transport for London's roundel, [9] Transport for Cornwall's logo was designed to give an identity to the network as a whole.
New buses in the network have red Transport for Cornwall livery, and old buses from the various operators are being rebranded. [2] Bus stop signs have been updated with the new branding [10] and Transport for Cornwall has also produced branded integrated bus network maps.
In February 2023 Transport for Cornwall launched the Love The Bus campaign, aimed at youth. [11]
The Rail Delivery Group Limited (RDG), previously the Association of Train Operating Companies, is the British rail industry membership body that brings together passenger and freight rail companies, Network Rail and High Speed 2. The RDG is approximately half-funded by Network Rail, the remainder of its funding being provided by the various transport groups it represents.
The Oyster card is a payment method for public transport in London, England, United Kingdom. A standard Oyster card is a blue credit-card-sized stored-value contactless smart card. It is promoted by Transport for London (TfL) and can be used on as part of London's integrated transport network on travel modes including London Buses, London Underground, the Docklands Light Railway (DLR), London Overground, Tramlink, some river boat services, and most National Rail services within the London fare zones. Since its introduction in June 2003, more than 86 million cards have been used.
London Buses is the subsidiary of Transport for London (TfL) that manages most bus services in London, England. It was formed following the Greater London Authority Act 1999 that transferred control of London Regional Transport (LRT) bus services to TfL, controlled by the Mayor of London.
Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) is the public body responsible for co-ordinating transport services in the West Midlands metropolitan county in England. It is an executive body of the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA), with bus franchising and highway management powers similar to Transport for London. TfWM's policies and strategy are set by the Transport Delivery Committee of the WMCA.
Storstockholms Lokaltrafik known as SL, (Greater Stockholm Local Transport) is the public transport organisation responsible for managing land-based public transport in Stockholm County, Sweden. SL oversees a network that includes the Stockholm Metro, Pendeltåg commuter trains, buses, trams, local rail, and some ferry services.
Cardiff Bus is the main operator of bus services in Cardiff, Wales and the surrounding area, including Barry and Penarth. The company is wholly owned by Cardiff Council and is one of the few municipal bus companies to remain in council ownership. Unlike municipal bus companies elsewhere in Britain, Cardiff Bus is unique in that it is directly managed by Councillors who sit on its Board, rather than as an Arms Length Organisation as other municipal bus companies in Great Britain are run.
Brighton & Hove Bus and Coach Company Limited, trading as Brighton & Hove, is a bus company operating most bus services in the city of Brighton and Hove in southern England. It is a subsidiary of the Go-Ahead Group.
Rail operators are government-assisted profit-based corporations, fares and ticketing on Singapore's Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system are aimed to break-even or exceed operating expenses. Rail operators collect fares based on account-based (ABT) and card-based ticketing options, the prices of which are calculated based on the distances travelled between the origin and destination. These prices increase in stages for standard non-concessionary travel, according to the distances travelled. In account-based ticketing, the fare is automatically calculated in the back-end and charged to the passenger post journey. On the other hand, card-based ticketing is proprietary to the transport network and the fare is computed by the system based on the store values recorded in the cards. The public transit system is harmonising towards full ABT.
Lothian Buses is a major bus operator based in Edinburgh, Scotland. It is the largest municipal bus company in the United Kingdom: the City of Edinburgh Council owns 91%, Midlothian Council 5%, East Lothian Council 3% and West Lothian Council 1%.
First Glasgow is the largest bus company serving the Greater Glasgow area in Scotland. It is a subsidiary of FirstGroup. The company operates within the area covered by the Strathclyde Partnership for Transport, a public body responsible for helping to co-ordinate public transport services in the Greater Glasgow area.
Southern Vectis is a bus operator on the Isle of Wight, founded in 1921 as "Dodson and Campbell" and became the "Vectis Bus Company" in 1923. The company was purchased by Southern Railway before being nationalised in 1969. In 1987, the company was re-privatised, and in July 2005, it became a subsidiary of Go-Ahead Group.
Newport Bus is the main provider of bus services in the city of Newport, Wales. A limited company whose shares are wholly owned by Newport City Council, it is one of the few remaining municipal bus companies in the United Kingdom.
National Express Coventry is a bus operator providing services in Coventry. It is a subsidiary of Mobico Group operating on the operators licence of National Express West Midlands.
Opal is a contactless smartcard fare collection system for public transport services in the greater Sydney area. Operation of the Opal system is managed by Transport for NSW. First launched in late 2012, Opal is valid on Transport for NSW's metro, train, bus, ferry and light rail services that operate in Sydney and the neighbouring Central Coast, Hunter Region, Blue Mountains, Illawarra and Southern Highlands areas. Opal equipment was designed from the start to support a variety of cards, but launched with the captive Opal cards.
The West Midlands Passenger Transport Executive (WMPTE) was the public body responsible for public transport in the West Midlands metropolitan county in the United Kingdom from 1969 until 2016. The organisation operated under the name Centro from 1990, and was publicly branded as Network West Midlands from 2005.
Ticketer is the brand name for a range of electronic ticket machines provided by British company Corvia Ltd, primarily for usage on buses. The cloud-based system, first marketed on a small scale in 2008, has since developed into a rival to the three major ticket issuing systems used by bus companies throughout Britain.
Autolinee Toscane S.p.A. is a private Italian-French company, wholly owned by RATP Dev, active in the local public transport sector. It manages several urban and suburban bus lines in Tuscany for a total of 1.7 million kilometres travelled annually.
The Bus Open Data Service (BODS) is a government-funded service in England, established in 2020 as part of the Bus Services Act 2017. It was created in a partnership between ITO World, the Department for Transport and KPMG.
The Bee Network is an integrated transport network for Greater Manchester, comprising bus, tram, cycling and walking routes. Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) is expected to have the network operational by 2025, with commuter rail services expected to be joining the network in 2028. Initially unveiled in 2018, the project is aiming to create a London-style transport system, to encourage more people to take public transport instead of cars.
Bus transport in Wales is a significant form of public transport in Wales. In 2021–22 52.3 million journeys were travelled in Wales on local buses.
