The song was written about a past experience of the band's lead singer, Hayley Williams, which involved a male friend who she felt was being exploited by a girl; when Williams and her friend dated afterwards, she wrote the track in order to "finally explain my side of the story and feel freed of it all". In late March, alongside the reveal of snippets of four album tracks, Lambert announced on Twitter that the album would be released on May 15, 2012. Lambert is the executive producer on Trespassing, as well as a principal writer.

Brytavious Lakeith Chambers, known professionally as Tay Keith, is an American record producer. He is best known for co-producing Travis Scott's 2018 single "Sicko Mode", which peaked atop the Billboard Hot 100, as well as Drake's "Nonstop", BlocBoy JB's "Look Alive", and Eminem’s "Not Alike" which peaked at numbers two, five, and 24 on the chart, respectively. His 2023 single, "Pound Town" marked his first entry on the chart as a lead artist.
