The Tribune Chronicle is a daily morning newspaper serving Warren, Ohio and the Mahoning Valley area of the United States. The newspaper claims to be the second oldest in the U.S. state of Ohio. [2] The Trib, as the newspaper is nicknamed by readers and in other local media, [3] is owned by Ogden Newspapers Inc. of Wheeling, West Virginia. [4] The newspaper is published by Ted Snyder, and its editor is Gregory Macafee. In 2008, USA Today reported daily circulation of 35,471 for the Tribune Chronicle. [5]

History

In June 1812, the Trump of Fame commenced publishing as the first newspaper in what had been the Connecticut Western Reserve. [2] [6] In 1816, this paper became known as the Western Reserve Chronicle, forerunner to the modern Tribune Chronicle. On April 14, 1883, the Chronicle commenced daily publication. Prior to this, the newspaper had been a weekly, publishing on Tuesdays. [2]

In 1924, Zell Hart Deming bought the Chronicle and merged it withThe Warren Tribune to create The Warren Tribune Chronicle. Upon her death, Deming passed on the paper to her daughter Helen Hart Hurlbert who would later hand ownership over to her daughter Zell Draz. [7]

In 1977, the newspaper changed to its present name, and began publishing on Sundays. On November 2, 1994, the paper launched its website, the first in the Mahoning Valley. The newspaper also became the first morning newspaper in Trumbull County, on July 6, 1999. [2] In 2014, the paper launched its digital edition. [8]

Expansion

On August 16, 2019, The Vindicator and Tribune Chronicle reached an agreement for the Tribune Chronicle to acquire The Vindicator’s subscription list, The Vindicator masthead and the Vindy.com domain, according to The Vindicator former general manager Mark Brown. As of September 1, 2019 Tribune Chronicle now publishes The Vindicator for the Mahoning County region. Trumbull County residents will remain getting the paper as Tribune Chronicle [9] [10] [11] [12] [13] [14]

In March 2024, the Tribune Chronicle and The Vindicator announced both paper's will end their Sunday print editions, and instead offer a larger weekend edition on Saturdays. [15]

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, also known as "the Trib", is the second-largest daily newspaper serving the Greater Pittsburgh metropolitan area of Western Pennsylvania. It transitioned to an all-digital format on December 1, 2016, but remains the second-largest daily in Pennsylvania, with nearly one million unique page views monthly. Capt. John Wheeler Leavitt (1755–1815), born in Suffield, Connecticut, was an early settler of Ohio's Western Reserve lands, where members of his family had bought large tracts from the state of Connecticut, and where Capt. Leavitt became an early innkeeper, politician and landowner in Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio. Capt. Leavitt was a member of the Connecticut Land Company and along with his cousin Ebenezer King from Suffield, paid over $51,000 for approximately 78,500 acres (318 km2) of Ohio land, which included the township of Warren. The Leavitt family of Warren would go on to play a substantial role in the history of their adopted town and in Ohio.

The All-American Conference is an Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA)-sanctioned league created in 2008 from the merger of the Trumbull Athletic Conference and Metro Athletic Conference. 17 sports are offered throughout fall, winter and spring sports seasons. The conference has teams divided into four (4) tiers, depending on sport and includes Gold, Red, White and Blue divisions. Between the merger, the only schools that declined to participate in the merger were the MAC's East Liverpool High School and the TAC's Brookfield High School, with Beaver Local High School joining.
